A night out for Megan and her friend Cat ends very badly and since then, Megan has been on the run. She’s been holed up in an old cottage in the country trying to be untraceable when her past catches up to her during a storm and subsequent blackout.
While I liked the premise enough and thought there were some interesting twists, the dual then triple timelines seemed disjointed. Also, the ending didn’t work well and didn’t make sense to me.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this eARC. The Blackout is out now.
3.5 stars rounded up. I enjoyed my first book from this author and would read more from them in future. This book centres on Meg in 3 periods of her life with something awful happening in each one.
This book was a lot more graphic than I was expecting so look up trigger warnings before reading if you have triggers.
I enjoyed each of the time periods but the present day was the most interesting for me. With recent UK headlines this storyline was unfortunately all too believable and therefore more chilling.
The writing style was great, I thought the pacing was a little quick to begin with then realised why the beginning passed so quickly and the pacing then felt right.
Meg is in hiding - we dont know why for a while but she is keeping an exceptionally low profile. Her storyline is interspersed with flashbacks to a very different Meg, who is out on a wild night out with her best friend Cat. The two timelines unravel to a gritty conclusion.
The Blackout wasn't my favourite book by this author I'm afraid, the story was a bit disjointed and left more questions than it answered
Reading Between the Wines book review #116/115(met goal in Sept!) for 2023:
Rating: 2 🍷🍷
Book: The Blackout
Author: Sarah Goodwin
Available Now!!
Sipping thoughts: I was confused for part of this book because of the triple timeline. I think there were some good parts of this book but so much was happening that overlapped with other parts that I could not keep up. There were also so many lose ends that never got closed so it made the story less appealing.
Cheers and thank you to @AvonBooksUK and @Netgalley for an advanced copy of @TheBlackout.

You can't outrun the past…
Summer, 2022. When Meg and Cat are forced to take a dangerous shortcut home one night, they notice two men silently following them. Suddenly running for their lives, they scramble into an abandoned building to hide and wait for help.
…for what’s done in the dark will come to light…
One year later. Attempting to escape the horrors of that fateful night, Meg barricades herself into a safehouse at the edge of a crumbling sea cliff. As a storm rages outside, a blackout plunges the house into darkness. But Meg’s not alone.
…and someone wants revenge.
If you are looking for a book that will keep your interest from the start and leave you wanting more, this is the book for you. I will we looking for future books by this author!
Meg & Cat are taking a shortcut on their way home after a night out, and are being followed by two men. They seek refuge in an abandonned house and hide themselves away as best they can. However, events of that night change the course of so many lives, not just theirs.
A fast paced, cat & mouse story, with Meg barricading herself into a small house on the edge of a cliff. A storm arrives and the house is plunged into darkness...... Will she stay safe? Will they find her?
Read to find out...
I found it took a while to get into this book but I enjoyed it once it got going. If I wasn’t doing a review I must admit I might not have bothered but I’m glad I did. I enjoyed The Resort more but this was still quite good
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for my copy of The Blackout by Sarah Goodwin
Meg and Cat have had a great night out clubbing until they are followed by two men.
What happens that night affects Meg badly and she holes up in an old cottage trying to forget what happened and hide away.
The story is told over three timelines which makes it a bit confusing and there is lots in the book that is not needed and doesn’t go anywhere
I did finish it but, I’d think twice before reading another from this author.
I'm not sure how to review this one. I really liked this one. Not as much as this author's previous novel, The Resort, but I really enjoyed reading it. This one was a bit slower to get into and I never connected with the main character, and it was more chase suspense rather than thriller suspense. Somehow it still worked though! Meg and Cat are walking home from a nightclub. Meg's bag is stolen, and the girls notice someone is following them. They run and hide in an abandoned warehouse building. They are saved by the cops and Meg ends up hiding in a rundown cabin at the edge of a cliff. The creep-factor is high with this one and the atmosphere is excellent. I don't want to ruin anything, so I will stop here. This is an author to watch, and I look forward to more!
Thank you to #NetGalley, Sarah Goodwin and Avon Books UK for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
Y first five star in awhile. So many plot twists kept me guessing through every page. The characters were very well written and the storylines moving through the past and present kept me fully invested. I binge read this in one night. Yet again, Sarah Goodwin writes a fast paced thriller that I just can’t get enough of.
Thank you NetGalley for this arc
This was a thrilling read which had me hooked from the first page. Very clever and creepy. Highly recommend this one for people who enjoy an "on the edge of your seat" thriller. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
This is a really good, tense thriller. Meg has spent the last year trying to escape her past after her friend is murdered. She knows she is being followed and it's a game of cat and mouse while she constantly looks over her shoulder. Now she thinks she has found the perfect hiding place and then the lights to off. Brilliant read
The Blackout has an interesting concept, however it wasn't for me. I tried for several weeks to get into the story, but didn't find the characters had any substance nor were they likeable. This book was a DNF, but I am open to checking out other works from this author. Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
A very action heavy suspense novel, not so much a thriller. There were some pretty dark themes in this one. Slow to begin and then a lot of chasing. Unfortunately not my favourite Goodwin novel.
This book is categorized as a thriller and boy does the first part of the book deliver on that! So well, that I double-checked to make sure my doors were locked. It’s told in dual-timelines which help the reader understand what is going on and why. Unfortunately, the past timeline was sometimes so detailed that it slowed the book down to the point that it really affected the pacing of the whole book. That made this a more middle of the road thriller for me.
The main characters were unlikeable, but that didn’t bother me and made it more interesting.
My biggest issue with the book was the ending. It was weird and hard to understand which made me feel really unsatisfied.
3/5 stars
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Book UK for an eARC of this novel.
This was a very good book, just wow! I had a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed the writing style and all of the characters.. This will sure be an author that I would read again. Anyone who likes reading psychological thrillers, be sure to give this a try.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the the copy of the e-arc in exchange for a honest review. 4 star
Great read! Enjoyed the shifting timelines throughout. Giving you enough information to keep you turning the page. Great plot well written and although it threw me at first I quite enjoyed the epilogue
A night out for Meg & her friend Cat goes badly when they leave a nightclub & have to walk home because Meg's bag was stolen. When the girls realise someone is following them they hide in a disused industrial building- but then things go from bad to worse! As a result Cat moves away & Meg hides out in a cottage that is ready to slide off the edge of a cliff. It might not have many mod cons but Meg thinks she can make it safe for herself. But will she ever be safe what those who are meant to protect her are out to get her.
This was quite a scary & atmospheric read. I did find that a large suspension of belief was necessary but then that's what reading fiction is all about isn't it? Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book
Meg has changed her name and is trying to reinvent her life following a horrendous incident that happened after a night out in Bristol. Life is hard but she thinks she is safe until her past catches up with her and a struggle for survival against the odds ensues.
This is a well written and tense read full of twists and scenes of peril that had me reading way into the night. The characters are great and with the back story to Meg, I became invested in her story.
Another book by Sarah Goodwin I have enjoyed and look forward to reading more in the future and many thanks go to the author, Avon Books UK and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of The Blackout.
A good story rather different, but just slightly confusing in the latter part as to who the story was about.
I enjoyed it and it was definately creepy.
