I have always wanted to read the Artist's Way and integrate morning pages into my life, and this book was a great companion for the journey! For some backstory:
Cameron's approach is deeply intuitive, blending spirituality with practical exercises that guide readers through a process of artistic and personal discovery. The cornerstone of the book is the practice of Morning Pages and Artist Dates, two tools that encourage a direct connection with the inner creative self. Morning Pages, a daily writing ritual, serves as a form of meditation, clearing the mind of clutter and allowing ideas to flow more freely. Artist Dates, on the other hand, are weekly solo expeditions to explore something fun, nurturing the inner artist with new experiences.
Cameron writes with warmth and wisdom, making it feel like you're receiving advice from a trusted mentor. Her principles are not restricted to 'artists' in the traditional sense but are applicable to anyone looking to inject more creativity into their life, whether in their career, hobbies, or personal development. The book's structure is designed to be followed over a 12-week course, making it a commitment
I am a fan of the original Artist's Way, and still practice morning pages and artist dates, so I was looking forward to this one. Honestly, though, it doesn't add much beyond the author's previous works in terms of process. It's more of a memoir (with some name dropping that was kind of unsavory) and talk about writing "for guidance"--maybe you have to be a bit more woo-woo than I am these days to access that.
I'll keep recommending the original flavor and the journal to anyone, but this book is just for Cameron superfans, I think.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
A great follow up to The Artist’s Way where Cameron shows how seeking guidance daily can make any life a greater one.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Essentials and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
For someone who thinks of themselves as wildly uncreative, this is such a way to flex long dormant muscles. Love all of Cameron's teachings!
Julia Cameron is an auto-read (and auto re-read) author for me and has been since my freshman year in college back in the early 90s. I've read nearly every one of her books, but especially The Artist's Way series, and I always come away with a new perspective I didn't have before. Her advice is invaluable to me!
I am currently working through Cameron’s first book ‘The artist way’ and find this book to be very helpful as a companion to the book! Writing for guidance (discussed in this book) is another tool to add to your Artist way toolkit (morning pages, artist dates, and now writing for guidance).
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the digital advanced readers copy!! I received a complimentary copy of this book.
Fabulous, as always, from Julia Cameron. If you're a working writer, this book is going to give you that lift that you've been needing. It's like a private session with the greatest motivator ever. No nonsense, no pumping fists, no gimmicks. Just insights and a fresh dose of encouragement. It's a must.
I am a fan of Julia Cameron. I've read the original Artist's Way and the Writing Diet. She has a way of writing that embodies what she's saying. It's breezy but impactful. It's about putting the artist in you first, instead of forgetting about them altogether.
Did this classic need an update? Not really, but also yes, in that I hope that it gets this book in more hands, so we can have happier, more alive, people, who are living up to their potential.
Morning pages have fundamentally changed my life, and if that doesn't sell the need for this book in this world, nothing will.
I have been a fan of Cameron's for years. I always benefited from journaling and Cameron's concept of Morning Pages brought insights from that experience to a new level. Writing for personal expression and insight is one thing but doing it for guidance is at another level.
One reason I like Cameron's teaching is her belief in higher forces that can provide guidance. Her method is not restricted to a certain religious discipline but can be used by people of any faith.
As is her habit of late, Cameron lets us look into her own life and the lives of others as to how writing for guidance plays out. She also gives exercises such as questions to ask to set off the writing experience. She stimulates us to write about concerns we have, decisions we need to make, areas where we need more information, and more.
Cameron has given us many tools over the years: Morning Pages, Artist's Dates, Walks, and now Writing for Guidance. I, like many others, have found great benefit in following these practices and recommend her latest book to continue the writing experiences. Try it out by writing on “I wish I could...”
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Julia Cameron's book about guidance is a much needed addition to her original book, The Artist's Way.
It is a six-week course and every chapter is a new day in Julia's life. The reader is gently invited into her daily tribulations along with her little dog, Lily and her friends. At the end of each chapter there are prompts to help the reader ask for guidance.
It was refreshing to know that someone as seemingly confident and successful as Julia Cameron needs guidance. And that we can all access the same wisdom.
However, it is a spiritual book and there is occasional mention of God and praying. This is a not a scientifically researched book, but it is a wonderful addition to anyone looking to indulge in honing their intuition and wanting to add-on to their journaling practice.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for access to an advanced digital copy. All opinions are my own.
Another winner for us the followers of Julia Cameron's writing and for those new to her who will become fans. A wonderful addition to her collection of helpful creative books
This course is just as described—intuitive. Julia Cameron is a genius at helping people tap into the intuitive, and this book is no exception.
In these pages, I found myself challenged, strengthened, and inspired in ways I didn’t know I had access to. Cameron’s brilliance is in her simplicity and her openness. What she teaches works, and I’m a fan for life.
This books reads in an episodic way, so don’t expect to binge it all at once. It is designed for a slow, gradual pace, and this is intentional. Learning to seek guidance should be done gradually, not forcefully, so that habits are formed along the way.
Big fan. I’ll come back to this one.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an eARC of this book in exchange for a review.
Julia Cameron never misses. This was a book I will definitely buy a hard copy of and highlight and mark and read again from time to time. So much to glean and really inspiring, thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
I would love to love Julia Cameron’s recent work — the Artist’s Way was a game changer, and I have done morning pages on and off for years. But this felt like a rehash of many of her previous books, adding little that was new. Being still enough to hear an inner voice (whether from a higher power or not) is excellent advice, but I would start with the Artist’s Way.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC.
This book is perfect for fans of Julia Cameron who already identify with her writing style and framework for practicing the craft of writing. In this book she uses an almost diary narrative to teach about the power of a higher power which she refers to as “guidance” in the writing life. She is sensitive to people’s unique beliefs in powers beyond the known, and I absolutely love that about her. Not sure I’d recommend it to beginners of Julia, though.
Julia Cameron's Living the Artist's Way is a game-changer, unveiling the transformative power of writing for guidance. Her conversational style seamlessly weaves personal tales with practical wisdom. More than a guide, it's a trusted companion on the journey to greater happiness and creative inspiration. A must-read for those seeking a fresh perspective on self-discovery. Highly recommended, and I'm grateful for Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for allowing me to read and review.
I loved this beautiful book! It was filled with the author's personal experiences of asking for guidance in her life. At the end of every chapter were questions for personal reflection and journaling so you can follow this process in your own life. If you are already a fan of The Artist's Way, this is a continuation and an extra step. However, this book can also be read independently from Julia Cameron's other works. An inspiring read with lots of prompts for personal reflection!
I find Julia Cameron's writing style very comforting and soothing. I appreciate how she breaks down some complexities of our routine, making them simple with her techniques. She's briefed on other methods in this book, but the focus here is guidance. I like how she balances out routine and habit with intuition. This book is great for someone who likes stories and tons of examples with their self help books.
Julia Cameron is just a genius plain and simple. Any books she puts out is basically a national treasure and an auto buy for me. Shes helped me so much as a writer.
Living the Artist's Way: An Intuitive Path to Greater Creativity by Julia Cameron is such a treasure. Ms Cameron and her Artist’s Way have been fundamental to the process of many artists for years. Here, in this book, she fleshes out her method even more, literally guiding the reader through a six week process. I found this book to be amazing. I loved the way she laid out her process and took things step by step. This is a book that any creative could pick up and immediately gain from. I highly recommend it. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
