I loved Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. The idea of morning pages began my journaling habit, and that habit has been transformational.

So you can imagine how excited I was to read another book by her. Sadly I found myself unable to finish this. Don’t get me wrong - her advice about seeking inner guidance is a good one. We would all be smart to sit quietly and listen to what the Universe or God or intuition tells us. Such advice however isn’t worth 170 plus pages. Cameron stretched out her message with a lot of personal anecdotes and journal prompts.

Thank you for the advanced read. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.

I have most of Julia Cameron’s books. Her essays are powerful, yet relatable. The prompts in this book are focused on guidance. As an intuitive writer, this type of writing practice speaks to me. I will be picking up a physical copy of this book to read slowly and make notes in the margins. Thanks Julia, for another thoughtful and timely book.

"Living the Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron introduces an exciting addition to her acclaimed Artist's Way toolkit: "writing for guidance." This method, developed over 30 years, offers a more spiritually focused approach to unlocking creativity and navigating life's challenges. In this six-week journey, readers learn how to connect with their inner wisdom and trust the answers they receive through their writing. While Cameron's original Artist's Way workbook was highly specific, this book takes on a more intimate and memoir-like tone, offering insight into her personal experiences and techniques for seeking guidance. It may not provide the step-by-step structure of her previous work, but it offers a deeper connection to Cameron as an author and teacher, making it a valuable addition to her creative philosophy. Whether you're a long-time follower of the Artist's Way or new to Cameron's teachings, "Living the Artist's Way" can help you discover a more profound connection to your creativity and intuition, making it a worthwhile read for those seeking to tap into their creative potential.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the Arc. Definitely a book I'll purchase when it releases.

When I was in highschool, I had an English teacher that had read the Artist's Way. Each class period, we started out by writing morning pages - even if the class was in the afternoon. 18 years later, and this has still stuck with me. That said, this is the first Julia Cameron book I have read for myself and I think I may have made a mistake picking this as my first. The description boasts of this being a guidebook to followers and newcomers. As a newcomer, I would disagree with the term guidebook. This book was mainly, memoir with a couple lines here and there with guidance. The description definitely should have mentioned this because had I known, I would have started with one of her other books. I feel like I would have appreciated and been able to get more from this book that way.

This is sectioned off into daily "guidance" - which was essentially the author talking about her day for a page or two and then 2-3 lines of a guided topic to write on. There wasn't any real guidance here. I also didn't feel motivated or inspired hearing about filling her dogs water bowl, phone calls with her friend to ask each other of they wrote on guidance, frustrations with fires, frustrations with rain, frustrations with the AC taking longer to get installed, etc.

As a newcomer, I don't think this was the right book and shouldn't be described as a great guidebook for newcomers alike. I am still very interested in the author's teachings though and plan to pick up one of her other books and go from there.

It's hard to wrong with this classic. This is nicely updated with some new material, and is an "evergreen" title recommended to one and all.

I really appreciate the free copy for review!!

I've read another Artist's Wa book by Julia Cameron recently and the message is the same--mostly, writer's pages. Write every day. Write first thing before anything else. Write. The prompts were great but there's a religious-based ideology that I could have done without. Otherwise, this is a helpful text for writers of all levels.

This is just like any other Julia Cameron book…not really any new ideas or information here that wasn’t already in her other books. I was also confused by the frequency of the name-dropping and grandiose personal tales that were meant to make her feel relatable. Some of the prompts were good and thought provoking.

Julia Cameron's books are a hot chocolate with fresh whipped cream on a winter's day: comforting, kind, and so needed. This book is no exception. I found the constant mentions of guidance repetitive, but this is a wonderful addition to The Artist's Way canon.

This book on "listening" to guidance while journal writing is an essential for anyone who follows Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way method. Told in a series of stories and interviews with friends, this book demonstrates how you can gain insight and answers to questions and dilemmas while making space for the divine on the pages of your journal.

I enjoyed this book. I had figured out years ago that many questions get answered and dilemmas solved while writing my Morning Pages, so this book was quite affirming. The book has helped me be more intentional about listening to divine guidance while journaling. Much appreciated!

This book gives readers a glimpse of how Julia Cameron lives the life that she has discussed in her book the Artist's Way. We see her worries, insecurities, joys, and routines in dealing with everyday life--the writer's life. Readers looking for the guidance found in the Artist's Way may be disappointed, but if you are looking to see how Julia embodies what she teaches, then pick up a copy of this book.

I am constantly hearing about Julia Cameron’s work from artist friends! I finally picked up the Artists Way this summer and then was granted ARC access to Living the Artist’s way by NetGalley.

This book is more focused on Cameron herself but still talks about her techniques. There is always something glean from her wisdom.

I was looking for more art instructions. Others would enjoy this but it was a poor selection choice on my part.

After 30 years, Cameron's Artist's Way books continue to inspire. Living the Artist's Way: an Intuitive Path to Greater Creativty steers further in memoir territory than some of the author's previous books, giving the reader a look into Cameron's busy but comtemplative life. She examines her experiences of seeking guidance and her techniques for doing so as well as the experiences of friends and family. Structured as a six-week course, this guide for tapping into intuition and creatvity is based on the principles that have comprised Cameron's previous Artist's Way works, emphasizing, but going beyond, the all important morning pages.

A treat for Cameron's fans and a worthwhile read for those interested in getting to know her and her techniques for creativty and living.

Full Disclosure--NetGalley and the publisher provided me with a digital ARC of this book. This is my honest review.

3.5 ⭐️ | “Living the Artist’s Way”

Julia Cameron’s newest addition to her Artist’s Way toolkit—“writing for guidance”—provides the foundation for a more spiritual accompaniment to the bestselling method that helps one unlock their inner artist and discover their creative potential.

As a lover of Cameron’s original Artist’s Way workbook, I found this addition to be an interestingly intimate peak into Cameron’s lived experiences as an artist who, like many of us, yearns for answers to seemingly difficult questions.

Although Cameron explains her technique for writing to achieve guidance in the introductory chapter, I found it to be less specific than I had hoped—especially after reading the increasingly specific original Artist’s Way workbook. This book reads more like a memoir with some loosely tied in guidance (see what I did there) on how to achieve her outlined method than a true step-by-step guide. I would suggest seeing the book as suck before jumping in as to limit any dissatisfaction that may come from expecting another nitty-gritty Artist’s Way 12-week program.

I would recommend this book to those craving a deeper connection to Cameron as an author and teacher and those who are searching for an extra push away from the “woo-woo,” as Cameron calls it, nature of the spiritual aspects of her work.

✨ Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press & NetGalley for sending me this electronic ARC in exchange for an honest review ✨

I will read anything that Cameron puts out into the universe! Her content is priceless and has helped my own writing craft so much. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. Five stars!

Guidance. Sounds easy enough. Ask. Believe. Receive. I write, as Julia Cameron suggests, but I don't get answers. It helps me sort things out though. I think I've read everything she's written and admire her so, right down to the fact that she lives in Santa Fe. Lots of good writing prompts and things to think about.
