Thanks NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion, and White Lion Publishing for access to this cute little arc!
4/5 stars!
Full of tips for new cat parents and cat puns, this was a quick, cute, and fun little read!
Cat Dads by Alison Davies is reminiscent of the old-fashioned "How to... " books that were a sort of tongue-in-cheek guide to various endeavors that don't necessarily require instructions. It's the type of thing you would give as a fun gift to the man who is a new cat owner or a long time feline aficionado. More a celebration of the cat owner than anything else.
As someone who's owned cats off and on for close to fifty years I can't say I learned too much from this book; although I did find out that "moggie" is a UK term for cat (never heard that one before). It's more a celebration of the cat owner than anything else.
I see this book as a great gift for someone (male) who is getting a new kitten (or adopting a full-grown rescue cat). If you're into that sort of thing it would be a great addition to a gift basket for a new pet owner; throw in a few treats, a bag of toys, this book and TA-DA! You're all set.
Cute concept that doesn't really execute. Heavy on cat puns and masculine stereotypes while light on actual advice for cat owners or information about cats. This is the kind of thoughtless add on that may move a few copies but is unlikely to be remembered in three months, when the orders arrive and you can't understand why you bothered to order it in the first place.
This is a cute mix of gift book and information. I like the bibliography at the end, the references to famous cat dads (and their cats!), and all the tips and tricks included to make great cat dads even better.
I also really loved the illustrations in this book--not too silly, not too serious. Perfect balance for your average cat lover, regardless of gender.
In fact, gender is the only issue I had with this little tome. I feel the gender representation included was pretty cliche, and while it's clear the author was not leaning hard on any negative stereotypes, it would have been nice to see more of demystifying or disproving of stale archetypes.
Overall, enjoyable read, and I will definitely look for some of the resources in the back! Would absolutely pick this up over other, less weighty gift books.
This is a cute book for more than just "cat dads." Also gives great tips for new cat owners. Very illustrative and reads well for any person over the age of 10.
This is such a lovely and heartwarming book to pick up and read in one sitting. Love all the quotes about the feline creatures and its interactions with humans. A light read on getting to know your feline friends and families better. Who knows next time when you stumble upon them on the road, you may be able to pet the strays and give them a little love or better adopt and bring them home. There are a few insights and tips too on how to take good care of your cat.
A humorous book, this is better suited as a gift book purchase than a title for my smaller public library collection, however it could still be useful to a larger library collection hoping to expand the strange gendered divide of cat and dog ownership. There is some useful information about cat body language and male cat owner profiles, the art is interesting, but overall it's much more fluff than informational.
Anyone can own a cat, but it takes a special sort of man to be a true Cat Dad. These feline fathers are the cream of the crop, the sort who you'd trust your kitty with any day. They know just how many treats to give, and the proper way to pull a string to strike a feline's fancy. These are the men whose hearts are owned by their precious puss. This book celebrates them to the utmost.
Alison Davies, cat aficionado, is the natural choice to pen this particular tome. She sings the praises of these Cat Dads, and categorizes them so that the reader can discover just which sort they are - and how to rise to the tops of those ranks to take the very best care of their fuzzy friend. The only person you're competing against is yourself, and the book makes it clear. Let's just do the best we can for our capricious kitties, no?
The book is lovingly illustrated, and sprinkled with different quotes from various cat lovers throughout history. There's a special shout out to the most American of all cat dads, Mark Twain, who provides a few quotes throughout. The ending even includes an interview with a current Instagram star cat dad who travels with his all over the world (a hint to those curious as to who he might be.)
This is a sweet book, and it would make a great gift to a new cat daddy out there just starting to find their feet. Thank you Netgalley, for this sweet book.
As a Cat Mom myself I always love books that depicts the bond of cats and their humans . Cats are often misunderstood as being aloof and not affectionate, this is farthest from the truth.
This book shows that men can form bonds with their feline children and this book does a great job showing this .
A great gift for all the cat dads in your life .
I just reviewed Cat Dads by Alison Davies. #CatDads #NetGalley
I enjoyed the illustrations. The text however really let down this book. I did not finish this book as I found the first section to be so basic and boring that I couldn't imagine continuing to read it. This strikes me as a book published solely to be given as a gift for someone who don't know that well, but really likes cats. I think people will buy this, but I don't think many people will ever actually read it.
If you followed this blog at certain points over the last year and a bit, I'm sure you may have came across a post or two in which I've written about two additions to my home.
Oreo and Squeak were a pair of kittens I looked after for my nephew for what was meant to be a few weeks. Those weeks have turned into over a year. And - in that time - other family members have referred to me as the animals' 'Cat Dad'.
I have been very reluctant to call myself a 'Cat Dad' because I am a relic from the '2 kool for skool' age. Or - I'd like to believe I am, anyway.
It seems being a cat dad is cool, though.
That is according to writer Alison Davies, whose book - Cat Dads: Your Guide to Feline Fatherhood - is set to be published next month.
Cat Dads by Alison Davies
A few days ago, I looked through.a list of upcoming titles on the Net Galley website. Davies' book stood out amongst all others because it seemed like an appropriate read considering my status as a relatively new owner of cats.
And a male owner, at that.
Davies comes across as a guru in this book of hers. She seems to understand a lot about felines and also what it takes to be an owner. Her knowledge is portrayed in a kind and witty style which somehow disguised that - underneath the happy-go-lucky way of writing - this reader was being taught about how important cats really are.
And how I - as a cat dad (if I am going to be called one) - am important to my cats.
That isn't all that is packed into this ninety-eight page book.
The second chapter consists of a quiz which asks specific questions to determine the kind of a cat dad I am. Based on the answers I gave, I am a 'Doting Daddy'. Apparently.
'Pawsome Tips' and famous quotes about cats appear throughout this guidebook to Cat Dadhood. Famous names like Jules Verne, Leonardo Da Vinci, Mark Twain and more have all written - or said - special things about the popular pet and these quotes have been picked by Davies to appear as interludes between the chapters.
Speaking of pages - it would be ignorance on my part to overlook the fine illustrations that Marie Ahfeldt has added throughout this book. They superbly compliment the writer's material.
One of the things I could resonate with when reading this book came in one of the early pages. Davies had a diagram which states that 'You're a Cat Dad if...' a conclusion which spun off from the opening part of the sentence was '...You order things online just to get more cardboard boxes for your cat to explore'.
It just so happens I read that part of the book an hour or so after a Costco order had arrived at my door. One of the first things I told my family, when I brought the box into the living room, was 'the boys will love this box!'
As you can see below, Oreo found his way in there like a shot:
Oreo in a Box
Another sentence closer in this page of the book states that I am a cat dad if I 'talk about your cat constantly and find new ways to bring them into conversation'.
I have evidently done that here by mentioning Oreo and his new play area.
After reaching the end of the book, I couldn't help but think 'this would have been an even more fun read had it been set for release this time last year'. It would have been a welcomed guide to have at the start of my cat ownership journey and would have surely made me embrace being called a 'Cat Dad' sooner.
I am a Cat Dad.
Very, very cute collection of shorts on how to adequately raise a happy and healthy cat (while being obsessed with them). The little personality quizzes are adorable.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC. The above reflects my honest opinion.
We all love a man who loves cats! This book was cute and love the cover and anything with cats has me signed up!
Princess Fuzzypants here: Cat Dads and Cat Brothers are a special breed. Not only do they have exactingly good taste, they are intelligent, kind and superior in every way…just like the objects of their adoration= us kitties.
This book is a lovely homage to those masculine members of the human race who have reached the lofty heights of being loved by those of us of the feline persuasion. It has a quiz that will tell you which kind of cat dad you are. My brother Scott is clearly the doting type. There are chapters that will help you become an even better cat dad. Since we are perfection in fur, striving for that goal should be the aspiration of all cat dads.
It has wonderful quotes from very devoted cat dads in history. And it has a chapter with a selection of cat dads both real and fictional. Plus there is some charming art to accompany each chapter. It is too bad this did not come out before Fathers Day but it will be well in time for Catmus. I think any cat dad would be delighted to receive the book as a present. Five purrs and two paws up.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
I'll never forget the day my now-husband met my cat. He got a massive headbutt and nuzzles so I knew he passed the test. And he was the best cat dad to our cats, who have since passed away.
This is a cute book and would make a nice gift for Father's Day to cat dads. We could relate to a lot of what this book offers.
Wholesome, essentials, and CUTE CUTE CUTE
For all the cat dads out there, this book is for the go.
IN LOVE WITH THE ILLUSTRATIONS.
It covers everything from the basic, feelings, gesture, body languages, and benefits.
I love how they put the quotes. The layout made it easy to read 👌👌 highly recommended
I requested this book to see if it would be the perfect gift for my Cat Dad husband, and I absolutely cannot wait to pick up a copy for him. Cat Dads are in right now and this book hits the nail on the head for cute, funny, and sweet. This book represents my husband in so many ways, and I am sure so many other men will be able to laugh at this and see their ridiculous selves in this book.
This book is freaking adorable. While I identify as a woman and cannot be a cat dad I am a cat mom and it was genuine pleasure to flip through the illustrations and the guidelines to being a good cat dad. I adore this book. It is so cute and such a fun way to explain cat behavior and how to relate to your cat. It would be a great Christmas stocking stuffer, a cute gag gift, or a genuine present for the cat lover in your life, be they dad, mom, or non binary in their cat parenting.
A gift book for cat dads and aspiring cat dads, with cute illustrations and full page quotes from famous literary cat dads. You can read it in a half hour. As an introduction to felines, it does an adequate job. A new cat dad is going to need much more than just this book, though. While this book covers some feline behaviors like tail position and purring, it completely ignores others (like cats hiding while sick, for instance, or the dynamics of a multiple pet household). New cat dads looking for more in-depth info should seek out a cat “owner’s manual,” of which there are several on the market (including one from noted cat dad Jackson Galaxy, referenced here for further reading). But if you’re looking for a cute coffee table book for the cat dad in your life? CAT DADS has you covered!
This book has lots to give:
- cute illustrations
- very good tips about how a cat thinks and how you can learn to understand the signs
- very empathic explanations without being silly or over the top - if you live with a cat you‘ll find yoiurself at home immediately
- the right bit of humor and
- the love to the cats that‘s pouring through every line.
The book is not only for Cat Dads! It‘s more a marketing gag to grab attention of those who until recently haven‘t been the main group for being cat lovers: men.
Have fun!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy of this little gem!
