A fun and quick read! As it is more novella style, it was very quick paced and not a lot of detail flushed out. Will definitely read the sequel, the characters are all very likable and would like to see more of the couples connection. It did feel too short for everything tried to fit in, short chapters and brushing past simple stuff. It didn’t feel like there was much of a climax, and the resolution was rushed. I hope the sequel will make it feel more like a full story, though I anticipate feeling they would do better as one full length novel as opposed to two novellas. Overall, a lovely holiday read perfect for the start of the season.
This was a short, easy read. A perfect way to kick off the holiday season! I loved the Scottish setting and charm. The storyline was a bit unbelievable but kept me interested in reading. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking to get in the holiday spirit with a bit of romance.
I was rooting for Melissa MacKenzie from page one of Highlands Christmas by Amy Quick Parrish.
Melissa is married to a jerk that cheats on her, serves her with divorce papers and wants the house. So it is serendipity when she receives a letter telling her that she has inherited a home in Scotland. She quickly books a flight and leaves for her new life. At the airport, she meets a charming man who has a Scottish accent and happens to be on her plane then her train to the same small village in Scotland. Great right? Well it would be if Colin weren't her husband's divorce lawyer! UGH!
The attraction grows as they continue to cross paths and Colin's family helps Melissa get settled. But is it all too good to be true?
This was a short book, but a packs a big dose of Christmas spirit. Thank you to NetGalley and Flying Cactus for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I truly adored this sweet little novella. I am officially in the Christmas spirit so I jumped at the chance to read this. The only issue I had was that it was a little too short and could've used more details.
A quick short read that doesn't give much depth to the characters or the story. If you're looking for a super quick read than this might be for you! Sadly for me, this didn't hit the spot as I was just disengaged with the entire thing.
This was a lovely quick light hearted Christmas story. The descriptions of the Scottish countryside were so good I could easily picture them in my mind.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book
NetGalley was kind enough to let me read this novella in return for a review so here I am! Highlands Christmas was a sweet little book about new beginnings and what stepping out of your comfort zone is truly about. Despite all the unfortunate circumstances our female main character Melissa went through, she managed to still be such a positive person. I really appreciated the “when life gives you lemons” energy. The cast of characters were really sweet and the backdrop of beautiful Scotland sounded like an ideal place to learn about yourself while also falling for a kind lawyer.
Overall, my one big criticism for this book was the pacing. I felt that most of the events in the book happened quite quickly and were resolved just as fast. If this book had been longer I think it would’ve allowed the story to be paced a bit better.
Thank you NetGalley and Amy Quick Parrish for the opportunity to read this title.
This is a very short story about Melissa, who learns her husband is cheating on her and wants a divorce. She heads to Scotland after receiving a letter that she has inherited a home there. She meets a man on the plane who it turns out is from the same town in Scotland as her house is located and is coincidentally her husband’s divorce attorney. The book depicts Scotland at Christmas time where Melissa befriends the attorney’s sister and becomes a member of the community.
It’s a warm, Christmas read that I would have enjoyed more of it was just a bit longer.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book.
I received this book as an ARC from Amy Quick Parrish through NetGalley and this review is based on my own opinion.
When Melissa's husband files for divorce and wants her out of the house she doesn't know what to do or where to go, but then she receives a letter that she will inherit a house in Scotland.
Flying over to Scotland, she accidentally meets Colin, a Scottish-American lawyer, who happens to be the lawyer of her husbands divorce lawyer.
Fate decides and Colin happens to be on the same flight to Edinburgh, the same train to Inverness and he happens to live in the same town as her new home.
There's an obvious chemistry between them and together they enjoy the Scottish culture and Christmas festivities.
With it's 93 pages this story is perfect to get all cozied up with a blanket and a cup of a tea for an afternoon read.
Ofcourse it's all a bit quick paced and rushed because it has to fit in that little amount of pages but I'm excited that there will be a sequel next year because I want to know how their story continues.
The way that the author described the town and characters of the story really made me miss Edinburgh.
Happy publication day and thank you to Netgalley for the chance to review this holiday read! I wasn’t sure we could fit a whole plot, character development and enough emotion into 100 pages. It felt a bit rushed. My biggest criticism is the book could have benefited from being a full length novel. That said, it was a cozy read that prepped me for the tinsel spirit. 3.5/5 stars ⭐️
I understand your preference for a semi-formal tone. Here's a revised version of the review with a slightly more formal tone:
"I typically refrain from delivering unfavorable critiques out of respect for the considerable effort and commitment that authors invest in their work. In the case of 'Highlands Christmas--Wishes Come True,' a concise Christmas novella, it pains me to acknowledge its shortcomings.
Despite its brevity, the novella appeared to fall short in terms of plot intricacy, character development, and the incorporation of the distinctive Scottish elements that one commonly associates with the country. At certain points, I found myself speculating whether the narrative might take a predictable turn by introducing the legendary Loch Ness Monster, Nessie.
The central plot device, which involved transferring the ownership of a house to a pet's name, followed by the acquisition of a pet, felt somewhat contrived and hastily executed. This instance was emblematic of a broader issue, whereby various narrative elements seemed underdeveloped and lacking in foresight.
The storyline, though charming, unfolded with a sense of inevitability that bordered on implausibility. The dearth of substantial conflict or genuine challenges left me yearning for a more intricate and immersive narrative.Everything seemed too good to be true.
In essence, 'Highlands Christmas--Wishes Come True' possessed the potential to serve as an endearing holiday tale. However, I firmly believe that the novella could have significantly benefited from an extended format, which would have allowed for a more profound exploration of its characters and plot. Such an approach would have undoubtedly enhanced the overall reading experience."
What a cute story! If you’re looking for a fast paced fun easy read, this is it! I enjoyed reading about Christmas in Scotland. Great small town vibes. Looking forward to the characters next adventures!
Melissa thought she had the perfect life until her husband tells her that he is seeing another woman and wants a divorce. Trying to figure her next steps, Melissa receives a letter stating that she has inherited a house in Scotland. After a little squirrel revenge on her husband, Melisssa jumps on a flight to Scotland where she meets the handsome Collins. The only problem, Collins is her husband's divorce attorney. Will Melissa be able to make Scotland her new home?
This is the perfect holiday book for people who wants a quick read. At only 96 pages, I enjoyed how much there was to this story. I enjoyed the chemistry between Melissa and Collins and the events in their small town, makes me want to visit during the holidays. I am curious on how the story will progress since a sequel is planned to be published in Fall 2024 titled Highlands New Year, but I am excited to read it when it comes out.
Highlands Christmas comes out October 25th.
Thank you to NetGalley and Flying Cactus Publishing for the opportunity to review Highlands Christmas. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.
This was a cute, Hallmark-like, quick read just in time to get in the spirit for the upcoming holiday season! I understand it was a novella, but a lot of it felt very rushed and undeveloped - I liked the characters and storyline, but I wanted to know more! I'm hoping for more full-length reads from Parrish in the future!
I finished Highlands Christmas by Amy Quick Parrish in a day, and it was quite a journey. A Christmas novella which is a bit rushed and unrealistic - hopefully the sequel has more of a story. Thank you to NetGalley and Flying Cactus Publishing.
This was such a cute holiday read. I loved it! Loved Loved Loved the Scotland setting and fantasy elements.
This was a cute, very short, Christmas novella. Sadly, it also felt very juvenile, and was lacking in any kind of depth or emotion.
A perfect quick holiday story, perfect to read in afternoon, curled up by the Christmas tree. Look forward to continuing their story in the new year.
This is a good and quick read. I felt like Melissa was a bit too quick to jump into renovating the house in Scotland after pulling up and seeing the For Sale sign in the yard. It seems like it would have made her seem less naive to have her at least check into why the signs were showing up in the yard. None of the characters are super developed, which is expected with this being a novella. I hope there will be more to come on Melissa and Colin. I enjoyed all of the explanations on Scotland and the culture. Having recently visited the Highlands, this made me want to go back and explore more.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for advanced copy, and I give my review freely
Highland Christmas is a cute short story about Melissa MacKenzie, who is completely blindsided when her husband asks for a divorce, and declares she needs to get out of their house, since it's in his name. Serendipitously, a letter arrives from a mysterious relative's representative, telling her that she's inherited a house in Scotland. On her way across the ocean, Melissa meets Colin MacGregor, a charming Scot how happens to be her husband's lawyer. Time after time, they bump into each other throughout their travels and beyond. Meanwhile, there' something odd about Melissa's new house, which she loves, and Colin agrees to help her get to the bottom of it.
This story could use a lot of fleshing out in terms of character development and description. It's definitely a comfort read for someone looking for a short tale with a Hallmark plot line, while I was hoping for something more developed.
