This book was ADORABLE! I couldn't wait to read the second one. It was cute, sexy, funny and had some humor!
Thank you to NetGalley and Flying Cactus for the ARC of Highlands Christmas!
Highlands Christmas tells the story of Melissa MacKenzie, whose husband told her after Thanksgiving dinner that he was leaving her for one of their dinner guests. The next day she gets a letter in the mail that she inherited property in Scotland so she books a one way ticket and heads off to Scotland. There she makes herself right at home in the community, which just so happens to be where her soon-to-be-ex husband's attorney lives.
This was not my favorite story. Even with the Hallmark romantic holiday movie vibes, the coincidences were just too much. As someone with a legal background in probate and real estate, the way Melissa just showed up and makes herself at home without speaking to anyone was too inconceivable.
A cute novella about the wonders of the Christmas spirit.
After a Thanksgiving feast, Melissa’s husband tells her he’s been having an affair and wants a divorce. As a sign, Melissa gets a letter saying that she has inherited a house in Scotland from a distant relative. Melissa packs a suitcase and leaves Boston to start over.
Through many coincidences, Melissa meets someone who helps her traverse a new land, a new house, and a new life.
There wasn’t much in the way of character development or growth, but it was heartwarming to see Melissa pick herself up and move on after a devastating speed bump in her life. This was a quick and easy holiday read.
This ARC was provided by the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
I felt like this was almost just jotted down and that’s what was published. Really short and things happened so fast, nothing was expounded upon. Also, she literally starts liking a new guy and moves to a new country the day she gets divorced?? Is that even possible?

Highlands Christmas by Amy Quick Parrish
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Pages: 129 / Genre: Christmas Romance
It’s Thanksgiving and Melissa MacKenzie’s husband has just told her that he’s leaving her for another woman and wants a divorce and the house, and she has no idea what she’s going to do. But then a letter arrives telling her she’s inherited a house in Scotland. So she immediately packs her bags to go check it out. Once in Scotland, she begins reconnecting with her Scottish roots and celebrates the Christmas season with new friends, including her husband’s very good-looking divorce lawyer who just happens to be visiting family in the very village she’s in.
A lot of the Christmas books I’ve read this season are just set at Christmas time and include a few festive activities. This book really captures the season. The author described the setting in Scotland so well and it was really fun celebrating with Melissa as she learned all the festive Scottish customs.

Thank you @netgalley and @amyquickparrishwrites for the advanced copy of this book. I loved it!
I loved this! It was quick and fun and very easy to get through. Love Amy Quick Parrish and look forward to reading more from her!
I'm the first to admit that I love a good, cheesy holiday rom-com. Bonus points if it's a quick read (love a novella)! So when I read the synopsis for Highlands Christmas, I thought it would be a perfect choice for this holiday season. Unfortunately, this novella fell incredibly short of my (not particularly high) expectations.
What worked well:
- I enjoyed the setting.
- On paper, the synopsis is cute: a freshly divorced young woman moves to the Scottish Highlands to claim a newly inherited house, and along the way she makes some friends and falls in love. Sounds fun!
What didn't work for me:
- The entire book felt like it was told in bullet points. It felt like nothing more than the synopsis of a story. I know it was meant to be a novella, but each major plot point was covered in the span of a paragraph to a page, and the author took absolutely no time to build the scenes, the characters, or the budding relationships.
- I can suspend disbelief for the sake of a holiday romance, but there were so many elements that were truly absurd, and they weren't explained at all. The whole premise of the romance was one massive conflict of interest for both parties, but there was zero acknowledgement of that fact, when it had the potential to create some interesting narrative tension.
- The dialogue was ridiculous. Not only was it not believable dialogue, but it often served no purpose in the story. On one hand, the author would blow through important events in the span of a few sentences, but then she would spend an entire page on the main character ordering airport coffee. I don't understand this choice at all.
Thank you to NetGalley for my copy of this novella.
This was a cute and fun holiday romance!!! If you want a short, fast, and closed door romance then this might be for you.
This was a cute Christmas story, I loved the cover. It was like reading a hallmark movie but in book form. This book is about 100 pages so it's a easy read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a cute Christmas story. I didn't care if it was like a Hallmark movie because that's what I live for at Christmas.
Melissa finds out her husband is cheating. He wants everything in the divorce. She finds out she inherited a house in Scotland so at the airport she finds her soon to be ex-husbands at the airport going to Scotland as well. You get the point but this Christmas romance was adorable.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was adorable, with a great plot!
My first novella and it did not disappoint. While I felt some of the events were a bit far fetched, it still remained cute. I enjoyed Melissa and her optimism towards life despite of everything that happened to her.
I love that Melissa just books a flight to start a new life in Scotland with no hesitation! Should we all be so brave! This story reads like a wonderful fantasy world. Beautiful new home, friendly townspeople, a handsome Scot in a kilt doesn't hurt either...
Highland's Christmas about a woman whose husband suddenly wants a divorce. She decides after receiving a letter from company that she inherited a house in Scotland, so she moves from Boston to Scotland to start her new life. Along the way, she meets people who she automatically clicks with but one of them being the lawyer of her soon to be ex-husband.
The book is a short read and it's really cute for Christmas time with lots of holiday festivities in it! Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
Highlands Christmas is the story of Melissa MacKenzie, an American interior designer who has gone through a bad divorce. She inherits a home in Scotland - and finds romance in the process.
I wanted to read this book because the Scottish setting was appealing, and I loved the idea of the protagonist inheriting a house far away.
This is a fun, light, short (novella length) read. I loved the Scottish setting - and the Christmas theme. I recommend it for fans of women's fiction and light holiday romance.
What an adorable little Christmas read. It made me happy reading this little tale of a happy ending for Melissa, the main character. The only thing is I feel the book felt a little rushed. I could have used a little more romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Amy Quick Parrish for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my review
This was a super quick and enjoyable holiday read. Perfect for one of those books you're wanting to read to get you in the mood for the season. It is a clean romance, and I liked that about it. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves Christmas!
If you want something that feels like a hallmark movie this is it. Everything that I want in a cozy Christmas story. A big thanks for sending me this ARC. I’m forever thankful
This was a really quick but fun book. I needed this Christmas read to get me in the full spirit!
However, I felt like it was a bit rushed and I would've liked to read more about the characters (they felt flat sometimes!) and their relationships... I'm really excited for the sequel! Also, I really liked the whole Scottish culture!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a cute and sweet Christmas book. Perfect read for the holidays. Hallmark movie in a book.
