I do not like novellas because when they are cute and fluffy they are just TOO SHORT. Which was the case of this one. This book had everything to be a great Christmas book : a sudden divorce, a hot divorce lawyer, Scotland in December, Haggis and Christmas cookies 🎄
It was just too fast and I needed more of Colin in a kilt thank you.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC 🫶
I loved this cute and sweet Christmas novella! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a quick holiday romance read. I want to pack my stuff and head to the Scottish Highlands. I loved the characters and the side characters.
Hallmark Christmas movie style of a book - for Christmas time exactly what you need, a short story which makes you chuckle.
Not really a literary wonder but it was fun and short.
3.5 stars rounded up.
Super cute little Christmas novella! I didn’t pay attention and didn’t realize this was a novella going in. I usually don’t love novellas because of how rushed and unbelievable they usually are, but this one was pretty cute. I really enjoyed the main characters, the setting, and the additional characters too. The romance didn’t come on too strong, which I found refreshing for a novella.
Overall it was a cute, easy read for getting into the Christmas Spirit!
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for my copy in exchange for my honest review.
This novella had so much potential. I think if it was a full length novel it could have really gone somewhere. Basically the premise of the story is that Melissa is given a surprise divorce decree from her husband. Reeling from the shock, Melissa discovers that she has inherited a home in Scotland. Once in Scotland though, things aren't all that they seem, and it will take a Christmas miracle for Melissa to get everything that she is wishing for.
I enjoyed the beginning, the set-up for the story was decent and Melissas meet-cute with her ex-husbands divorce lawyer Colin was really promising. But then, it all went really stale for me. It's a novella, and I found myself struggling to finish it because I was quite bored.
There's a lot of "and then. and then. and then." With hardly any character development and dialogue, and the back stories were really weak. I stuck around because I was curious about the romance. But man, even that fell really flat for me.
Personally, I think the bones of the story were decent. But the writing itself and the length of the novel really stiff armed it. With better story and character development and increased book length I think it could have gone somewhere.
I received a free copy of this novella from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All words and opinions are my own.
Any book with its primary or secondary setting in Scotland, always count me in.
I'm fascinated by everything Scottish.
The story was ok, quite enjoyable, but I found lots of parts too cliche and far fetched For a novella so many things were happening but not enough"time" making it too unbelievable.
Thank you NetGalley and Flying Cactus for this ebook.
I really liked this book, it was different than anything else I've read which was a breath of fresh air. I will be recommending this to my friends, and auto buy this author!
The basic premise of this novel was adorable, but the timeframe and detail of events was confounding. There was a lot of detail missing to make any of this believable - I know it's fiction, but it isn't fantasy. Where was the grief, how did she move on so fast, where was the cultivation of drama and angst and even humour. It felt a little rushed and lifeless to me. Unfortunately I didn't connect with the characters because i didn't know the characters but think if it had been fleshed put with just a little "more" thought and detail, it had the potential to be a win for me.
I thought this was a super cute novella! The only problem that I had was that the story felt a little rushed and left out details that I would have liked to know. It also felt a little incomplete at the end. I know that there is a sequel, but I kind of wish the two were just combined into a single book with more details and the full story. Overall, it was a quick and fun holiday read!
Thank you to @netgalley for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review!
This was a super quick, sweet read. Was it realistic? No. Did it make a difference in my enjoyment? Also no. I really liked it. I liked the characters and the scenery.
Haha I love this book it made me laugh so hard it was cute and just want you need for this time. Super easy to read
After hosting a successful Thanksgiving dinner, Melissa’s husband shocks her by asking for a divorce. Caught completely off guard she struggles to figure out her next move. But when she gets a letter stating she inherited a home in Scotland, things begin to look up. Will Melissa be able to start her new chapter in the Highlands, or will she be let down once again?
Highlands Christmas: Wishes Come True is an utterly adorable novella! Coming in at mere 128 pages, Amy Quick Parrish, wrote the perfect read for the busiest time of the year. I was able to read it in about an hour while cuddled up on the coach.
The destination of Scotland made for the perfect setting. I loved getting to learn a little about their culture and traditions through the female main character, Melissa MacKensie. If it is anything like what Parrish described, then Scotland is one of the most inviting countries and I will be adding it to my bucket list.
Special thanks to Netgalley, Amy Quick Parrish, and Flying Cactus for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Melissa MacKenzie is throwing a Thanksgiving bash. After the loads of people leave, her husband, Dave, tells her he wants a divorce. He's been cheating on her and even had his wife care for his girlfriend's children when they, unbeknownst to her, went on a trip together. He even wants the house.
Not having seen it coming, Melissa is thrown, to say the least. Melissa receives a letter in the mail, informing her she's inherited a house in Scotland. Just before Christmas, Melissa flies to Scotland to claim her inheritance. At the airport, she meets a Scot who not only turns out to be going to the same small town to which she's headed, he is her husband's divorce lawyer. So, it's a bit awkward when Melissa develops feelings for Colin. She dives into Christmas in Highlands wholeheartedly and seemingly fits right into the town. And with Colin's family.
But, the road is not smooth and Melissa and Colin have some bumps to sort out. This was a quick, romantic Christmas read and will delight viewers of the Hallmark Channel.
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy. I really enjoyed this and will be getting copies for my shop.
I needed this. Amy Quick Parrish's novel Highlands Christmas got me right into the holiday mood. This was also a fast read. I almost felt it needed another 50-100 pages because I wanted more! On the other hand, I loved the way it ended and after reading, I am dying to go sledding and drink hot cocoa with my love.
I snagged this as a Read Now via NetGalley courtesy of Flying Cactus because I wanted to read Highlands New Year. While the latest can be treated as a standalone, I am a purist and have to read books in order!
Melissa and Colin were so cute. I know I had to suspend some of my sense of reality to fully embrace this one- otherwise, let's be real, Melissa's soon to be ex-husband's lawyer would not be able to interact with her at all. However, in Scotland away from it all, anything is possible, right?
Cute and charming short story, perfect for the holidays. Apparently, it's an easy plot and if you're trying to read more in English this is pretty easy to follow. I feel like more pages were needed and a different ending wouldn't hurt. To be honest, he end itself has nothing wrong with it but it happens way too suddenly.
This was a quick Christmas read! It was cute if not exactly memorable. The situation that the FMC gets herself into is mind-boggling and not even a suspension of disbelief could get me through it. For that reason, I'm not sure I'll pick up the New Year's follow up to this story.
I feel like so much detail was missing. Maybe it’s just me, but I felt no emotional connection to the characters. The romance felt so awkward and forced. I’m happy she got her house but what happened to her divorce? There felt like so much was missing or lacking to make the story go full circle.
I enjoyed the cozy hallmark vibes and love the Scottish environment but wanted more from character emotional development
This was a cute little novella about a soon-to-be divorcee who leaves everything behind and moves to Inverness, Scotland, upon hearing that she's inherited a cottage in the area. It's filled with things that I would love to see and do in Scotland-- dancing, bagpipes, kilts, haggis, castles, etc. It's a cozy little story. That said, it's written very simplistically, almost like a children's book in the sentence structure and amount of nuance included. It was very short, though, and a fun way to spend a couple of hours, though I don't think I'll commit the time to reading further in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley for the free copy of this title.
Melissa is an interior designer who enjoys the holidays and kicks it off with Thanksgiving with friends and her husband, David. Her life is turned upside down that night and she decides for a huge change by moving to Scotland.
It’s a quick read with this short story and I enjoyed it, but I don’t want to give too much away.
Thank you #NetGalley for the advance read.
