All about torillas....
This cookbook is very much the definitve torilla handbook. Add in some tacos to mix it up. Torillas have never had so much focus shined on them with extensive recipes and techniques. There are also some easy recipes but the bulk of this book is spent on a deep understanding of torillas - how to make them and how to utilize them.
Recommend.
Super Easy Tortilla and Taco Cookbook: Make Meals Fun, Delicious, and Easy with Taco and Tortilla Recipes Everyone Will Love is an excellent cookbook for everyone who loves tortillas and tacos. Included are small articles on history of the foods, as well as equipment needed, and recipes for basic tortillas, both corn and flour (several varieties of flour tortillas). The chapter on making tortillas is excellent, and includes step-by-step instructions, although it would be better if there were photographs of each step.
This cookbook includes recipes for yummy fillings as well as different sauces. There is even a guide to cheeses used in Mexican cooking.
After the basics, Griffith has included easy recipes for several famous and not-so-famous dishes – all made with some sort of tortillas. Many have beautiful photographs.
The recipes (which are mostly quite easy) are written in the traditional manner with a list of ingredients followed by step-by-step instructions that are easily followed by both beginning and advanced cooks. There are also helpful and interesting comments at the beginning of each recipe. As a bonus, there are also a few very silly jokes that will appeal to kids and adults with a sense of humor.
Although I wish there were more photos, this is still an excellent, 5 star cookbook for anybody who loves tortilla based dishes. The author has, however, made up for it with mouthwatering recipes. It is a cookbook that will be used in my kitchen often to the delight of my family, and is definitely recommended for anyone who loves Mexican dishes.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I love Mexican food and was really excited to get an e-ARC of Super Easy Tortilla and Taco Cookbook by Dotty Griffith.
I live in the UK and Mexican food is somewhat limited as a cuisine compared with other international cuisines. If you don’t live the major cities, Mexican food is confined to a couple of chain restaurants and interpretations of Mexican food on pub menus.
I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about the history of tortillas and the differences between corn and flour tortillas.
I would say that it felt like it was geared more to the American market in terms of brands in the recipes and suggested brands of presses. I think I’ll be able to improvise with UK ingredients and it might prove to be an exercise in trial and error.
I think the book would serve complete novices well as it’s very comprehensive and literally talks you through making tortillas with tutorials. I found the range of different fillings really useful and can’t wait to try making tortillas and experimenting with flavours this weekend.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Quarto Publishing Group, for making this e-ARC available to me in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Who doesn't love fresh tortilla's and Tacos? I certainly do, and I can't wait to try out the delicious recipes Dotty Griffith shares in this recipe book. So many fresh and simple recipes, you are sure to find something you will love.
Starting with a little history on tortillas and some useful tools to get you started, she walks us through the basics.
Flour, corn, Gorditas, Sopes. and even a gluten free flour recipe. Once you have your tortillas, next is the filling. From beef, chicken, pork, chorizo, Duck, shrimp, crab, and fish plenty of tasty options. Next you have recipes for black and pinto beans, salsas and you have all the fixings for a delicious meal.
Whether you are in the mood for enchiladas, mole, nachos, tacos, burritos and everything in between there are so many great ideas to add to your repertoire. Even some tasty desserts to sample. I loved the entire cookbook and found plenty of options my family will love. The only thing that I wish had been included was a recipe for spanish rice.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed learning about the history of the tortilla and how many different ways you make them. I was most happy to have a variety of easy-to-follow recipes where I could use tortillas. The most surprising section was the dessert section! I can't wait to try these!
The only negative with this book is that I was unclear on what set different kinds of dishes apart. Also, there weren't enough pictures and I saw several times where the same picture is used multiple times.
Good book based on making your own tortillas and then using those in a variety of dishes.
Part 1 (in 4 chapters) goes over tortilla history and info and how to make them. It includes lots of flavor variations for both corn and flour based tortillas as well. Part 2 has 5 chapters of recipes: Foundations: Fillings, Sauces, and Salsas; Snacks and Starters: Tortilla Chips, Nachos, Quesadillas, and Sopes; Tacos, More Tacos, and Breakfast Tacos, plus Burritos, Chimichangas, and Gorditas; Main Frames: Enchiladas, Fajitas, and Taco Salads; and The Flatbread Chameleon and Tortilla Desserts.
The recipes sound good, and many of them reference that you could use store-bought tortillas. This would be an interesting book for someone who wants to try making their own tortillas.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book has recipes on how to make your own tortillas and then has recipes to use tortillas in. There aren't pictures of the recipes and I enjoy seeing pictures in recipe books to see what the finished product should be. The recipes are for pretty standard Tex-Mex or Americanized Mexican food. The instructions on making your own tortillas is helpful. While I wasn't blown away by any of the recipes I could see this being helpful for someone new to to making tortillas.
I was very excited to see this upcoming book, Super Easy Tortilla and Taco Cookbook. We eat a lot of tortillas in our house, and to be able to make my own healthier and natural tortillas thrills me.
One of my fondest memories of a trip to San Diego when I was 15 was visiting a Mission, and watching them make fresh tortillas. They were delicious! So I’m very much looking forward to making the recipes in this cookbook.
The recipes and instructions look very easy to follow. There are recipes for flour (my husband’s preference) and corn tortillas (my preference). And the flavor options! Plus recipes for all the fillings, from fajitas, to tacos, to sauces, to desserts!
There is also a section for making tortillas using a manual press vs. an electric press.
Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read an advanced copy.
More of a tortilla textbook then simple cookbook.
I like this book very much. It's good addition to everyone from Mexican food beginners to someone who is looking for new tortilla ideas.
At the beginning there is in detail overview of everything you need to know about making tortillas and tortilla dishes, from different types of flour, equipment, tips and tricks for all parts of tortilla dish. As someone who loves Mexican food but is not from Americas I never used some of the processes and appliances mentioned such as torrilla press or warmer so it was very useful to learn about it.
That being said the book has somewhat unusual layout so I would definitely recommend starting from the beginning and before jumping up to cooking reading through most of the book.
You will not find one complete recipe for tacos or enchiladas, there are recipes for dough, then for fillings, for sauces etc. and then you have ideas for how to combine them. Because there is some flipping back and forth while choosing what to make I would prefer a phisical copy.
I couldn't praise a cookbook without trying some recipes first. I tried 5 in total: Basic Flour Tortillas (great dough recipe, soo easy to roll out, I tried to freeze the leftovers as per instruction it remains to be seen how they are holding up), Fajita chicken (amazing! the marinade is excellent and can be used for regular barbaque), refried beans (for me there is no tortilla dish without beans and this simple yet tasty recipe is worth repeating), grilled vegetables (basic but you cannot bypass it), Tomato and Green Chile Sauce (ties everything together just perfectly and can be served as taco dip), everything was rolled in some delicious enchiladas.
Big thumbs up for this one!
This isn’t a bad cookbook. It would get more stars from me but…
1. It is not an Own Voices cookbook, but is written by a white American woman.
2. There are not many photos.
3. There is no nutritional information for the recipes.
4. The recipes are not particularly healthy.
5. The recipes do not seem particularly authentic. For instance, the queso is made with Velveeta (and then she says she eats it as soup) and there is a recipe for fake crepes made of flour tortillas.
It’s still a fun cookbook and will probably be a hit with many American home cooks.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this eCopy to review
The recipes are packed full of flavour and are easy to follow, the only drawback is a lack of pictures which would have helped make the recipes sing. The first part of the book tells you how to make the different tortillas and tacos with the second part being about fillings there are even desserts!
The biggest takeaway from this cookbook is the accessibility for all age ranges. The recipes are simple and easy to follow along. The food options range from fajitas, tacos, tortillas, and EVEN DESSERTS. Very straightforward and cool!!
This book is in my opinion back to basics. Make your own Tortilla's whether it corn or flour, glutton free or even better yet flavored. All included in this cookbook with sauces, vegetarian options as well as everyone's favorite desserts. This is a cookbook that lays it out for the novice or someone willing to try something new or different flavors. This one is for you, experience a different culture through food.
Thank you to Netgalley, author and publisher for the opportunity.
Having been raised in Southern California Mexican food is my favorite. So this book is perfect for me. It tells you all you need to know about different kinds of tortillas and taco. How to make different sauces, and finally different filling. I love this book.
Super Easy Tortilla and Taco Cookbook by Dotty Griffith is chocked full of fantastic recipes but it could have benefitted from more photos and better photos to do justice to this spectacular array of recipes. Especially during the teaching of the tortilla-making section.
Also, the 'about the author' page does not have a photo and that feels intentional.
I do appreciate the emphasis on the tortilla making and the grand effort in this book but I would pass up buying this book for a more authentic feel of Mexican food cookbook.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher Quarto Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Super Eay Toritlla and Taco Cookbook by Dotty Griffith.
Okay, who doesn’t love tacos? I know I do, but I also know that when it comes to making them at home, I’m in a rut- making the same basic recipe every time due to lack of creativity or know-how. I’m excited to have this recipe book now to remedy that. It gives a wide variety of options for every taste and skill level- even how to make homemade tortillas if you’re so inclined. And the photos are gorgeous and make me eager to get started.
Thank you Dotty Griffith, Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press, New Shoe Press, and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.

All that you could want in a cookbook. Easy to follow recipes from simple to more complex. First time making my own tortillas and they so much better than the store bought ones, though will still be occasionally on my shopping list. I also like the addition of some vegetarian recipes and a lot of sauces that can be made and stored in the fridge. Nice photos as well.
As a Mexican food lover this is a wonderful book to inspire you to make authentic tacos & tortillas at home. It takes the fear out of making tortillas at home with the explanation of what equipment to best use and ingredients step by step. The fillings and options to make with them all sound delicious.
Lots of good ideas in this cookbook. I know there are a few I will be making for sure.
Beautiful pictures in the book.
My husband and I have been loving Mexican food lately so I was so excited to review this cookbook!
It does a great job of explaining the best tortilla press to purchase and why, offers gluten free suggestions; and has some nice history that is concise and interesting! But have no fear, if you’d prefer to buy your tortilla’s instead of making them you will still enjoy this cookbook! There are a ton of recipes for various vegetarian and meat filings, sauces, desserts and more! I cannot wait to make my own salsa and try the grilled fish recipe! The recipes are straightforward and sound delicious!
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group- Harvard Common Press/New Shoe Press for the digital advanced readers copy!! I received a complimentary copy of this cookbook. This cookbook will be published September 12, 2023! Add it to your holiday wish list!
