I must say this wasn’t what I was expecting, but none the less, it was enjoyable. The story was intriguing and held your attention. The characters were easy to relate to and connect with. I would recommend this book.
It was short fast read nut the there was no world building.. it was a bit confusing and just made no sense... I see there are 6 parts and although I love paranormal romances I don't think I will continue with this series ...
On a side not I love Derek Hale and I watch Teen Wolf during pandemic :)
Introduction teaser to a town of werewolves, a new girl in town with unknown gifts and her grandmother the psychic, who does seem to know what's up. Story has definite promise for paranormal romance fans.
This was an intriguing short read. I enjoyed the story, it kept me busy. The characters were likable as well. I will continue on with the rest of the series!
Not sure what the length of a book should be, but this book is more appropriate as a chapter in a book that has the potential to be great. I liked the story and writing style kept me reaching. I was extremely disappointed at the abrupt ending.
I surprisingly could not put this down I wanted more I hope I can find the next one soon as I love this so much
Mooncallers by Miriam Khan is a paranormal romance novel containing werewolves, psychics and witches. Ava is trying to rebuild her life after leaving an abusive relationship, but things are not as they seem in the small town her grandmother lives in. This is a story about coming into your own power and some shifter romancing.
Overall, this book had so many things that I love, but the execution was a little lackluster. I think that this would have been better as a novel, rather than a 6 part series. There were a lot of missed opportunities and it was hard to bond with the characters in such a short amount of time. This is a personal opinion though, and I can see how it is attractive to other readers. It reads like an episode of a tv series, which sets it up to be a bit dramatic. I think a lot of people will really like this type of format.
I did like this book enough that I would check out more by this author. I just probably would not read another one of her 6-part series without having access to all of them.. There is so much potential in the world she builds.
This story made me want to know more. I need to know what happens. I am a fan of werewolf stories. The magic is interesting. I need more. I cannot wait to read the next part. The cover is so pretty. Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is a very quick read, and the first novella in a 6 part series. The plot kept me intrigued, the author is setting up a very interesting world and collection of characters. I do wish that there was a bit more in depth building here, I felt like the events moved super quickly, and the conversations were kind of abrupt. That being said, I will be reading the next book and I'm interested to see if in the next book if things do flow a bit smoother/go a bit more in depth now that the ground work is laid!
um… Ava must save a stranger through magical hanky-panky, right out the gate…without explicits, but my prudish self is a bit traumatized.😳 This is the first episode with characters still being fleshed out. It will be interesting to see where this saga goes. Will I continue to be compelled to read or need to dip-out and let the more adventurous readers proceed.
I devoured this book way too quickly, but in the best way possible. The story pulled me in, kept me interested, and left me wanting more. There were some things that could have used further explaining to fill in some gaps, bur overall this was still a fun and fast read that pulled me in easily. I look forward to reading more about Ava and Kade!
I did also submit a review to Amazon right before submitting here.
"mooncallers" by miriam khan is a werewolf romance novella. ava comes to town to take care of her grandmother and meets kade, a werewolf. for some unknown reason, a rival pack wants to take ava away. kade saves her. later, kade is injured and sick and the only way he can be saved is if ava has sex with him.
the novella starts with kade broadly saying he isn't sexist and doesn't do alpha/beta roles. there is absolutely no world building. ava is the perfect mary sue, unsuspecting, containing previously unknown powers, and being the most beautiful woman in the room. the attraction between kade and ava is instantaneous. there is no logical explanation why they like each other so much, they just do, and then sex is the only way to save kade. i'm sorry, but that feels incredibly sexist to me. ava is an object to be saved, not a woman with her own wants and desires. she does not exist outside of men; her ex-boyfriend abused her, kade abuses her. ava is absolutely pressured into sex.
the structure of the pack is unknown. the members of the pack consist of a few minor characters who make witty quips but have no substance. none of these characters have any substance. they have the personalities of horny paper plates.
i find it funny that the word "fucked" in colloquial conversation is censored, yet there is sex. i also find it incredibly strange that kade is a carbon copy of the "teen wolf" character derek hale. the author even says this novella is "derek hale inspired." inspiration is not making a character the exact same as a preexisting character. it is in my opinion that this is a 56 page work of fanfiction.
there is no spark or chemistry between ava and kade. the villains are unknown and don't make an appearance. kade is as hypermasculine as it gets; if you have to say you aren't sexist, maybe you are. in fact, kade tells ava no before they have sex, yet they have sex anyways. it doesn't feel consensual for either of them.
the writing was very juvenile. this is listed on netgalley as adult AND teens & YA. why? pick one. teens will be shocked by this "you have to have sex with this person to save them" pressure and adults will be disappointed that the sex scenes are fade-to-black and not graphic. there are many cliches in the text as well, i found myself rolling my eyes.
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
The novella lacks consistency and flow. If you're reading just to have some spice scenes then this is perfect. Otherwise it just falls flats in multiple areas. The characters had barely any personality. Using werewolves in this context felt like a weak plot point and some terms are never really explained.
This was truly so much nothing. I'm not a huge fan of works marketed on their resemblance/inspiration of a fictional character or actor, but I suspended my concerns. I should have given this a miss entirely, it did absolutely zero interesting things. The worldbuilding is nothing, the characters are nothing, and the premise is nothing. Zero to recommend this.
Mooncallers Part 1 by Miriam Khan
ARC Rating 4/5 ⭐️
This is a PNR werewolf romance novella story. And It's book 1 of a novella series.
The story follows Ava, who has moved to a small town to escape her abusive ex. While she works in her grandparents' small hardwear store, she meets Kane, a werewolf.
From first sight, they are drawn together, and their futures are entwined.
The story was really nice, and I enjoyed a lot of the drama/suspense. Characters were also very likeable.
Also, as this was part 1, it ended on a cliffhanger, which was to be expected. After I finished the book, I bought the second book in the series, which I also enjoyed.
Overall, it was a fun, easy, and quick read and would recommend it.
Thank you, NetGalley, Victory Editing, and Miriam Khan, for sending this eARC for review. All opinions are my own.
