This is a wonderful book, and I have recommended it widely. As someone who studied Russian history and politics for several years in graduate school, this book was such a treat. Reading about the author's childhood brings the history to life, and connecting it with the recipes and cuisine of Soviet countries gives a hearty context to the narrative. Well-written, entertaining, informative, and interesting, Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking is one of my favorite books.
