Thank you Harper Collins for the e-arc.
After reading fantasy this is just the palette cleanser that I needed.
I loved everything about Evelyn and Joseph’s relationship, there were times I found myself empathizing with how Evelyn on how she felt about motherhood and life in general at times.
If you like Nicholas sparks you will want to give this a try.
The Days I Loved You Most by Amy Neff is an unforgettable, passionate, emotional, heartbreaking, and heartwarming love story which spans fifty plus years. The story of Evelyn and Joseph, who fell in love quite young and have fought hard to keep their family together. This novel follows their time together after they make a tough announcement to their children that Evelyn is ill and is only expected to live a year. Additionally, Joseph has decided that he cannot live without her so he too will leave this Earth with his wife. As expected the children do not take this news well. The couple and their children spend the year reminiscing over the couples life.
This novel is well written and obviously emotional. There are points where it is difficult to connect to the characters but I found myself in tears throughout the book and it touches on serious topics but it's well worth a read..
This book should have a warning label attached. Topics that maybe will be too much for people who have experienced a family members decline. A beautiful love story, but I would have a hard time as a librarian recommending it if I didn’t know the person really well.
The Days I Loved You Most by Amy Neff is a heartfelt story about love, friendship, and the ways life pulls us apart and brings us back together. The characters feel real, and their emotional ups and downs hit hard. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you long after you’ve finished. If you love reflective, emotional reads, this one’s for you!
Evelyn and Joseph have spent their entire lives together - seven decades of childhood, war, coming of age, marriage, children, grandchildren, loss, work, and a difficult diagnosis. As Evelyn’s life draws to a close, they must decide on what terms to say goodbye, to each other and to their children. 3.75
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced review copy.
“No one in love gets out of this life unscathed.”
Thank you Harlequin Trade Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC!
I was really excited to read The Days I Loved You Most, I mean look at that beautiful cover! Overall I really enjoyed the story and the coastal Connecticut vibes - I could easily picture the beach house and all the days/nights spent at the beach as a family. Unfortunately I didn’t feel fully invested in the characters. It felt like a lot of telling us how great Evelyn and Joseph’s love story was, but all the flashbacks were fights or turmoil in the marriage. Which I know is the raw and real side of marriage, but didn’t seem to match up with “the greatest love” storyline.
I was bummed this one didn’t totally work for me, but I’m excited to see what the author does next! I loved all the behind the scenes posts on how she wrote the book and the real life inspiration for characters and places.
This story was excellent! Wow your emotions will ride a coaster and yes tears wil get you. This great family story that is often raw sad.
Thank you NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing, & Park Row for the ARC copy of this book.
The most beautiful family story....one of my favorite books of the entire year. This story follows a couple through loss, parenting, trials in marriage and illness with strength and devotion. Highly recommended!
A lovely well written book that I almost didn't read because I am old and thought the subject would be depressing. Instead I found a beautiful love story.
The characters are well developed and believable. The
Ending was perfect. Highly recommend.
Get your box of tissues out and leave them next to you! The Days I Loved You Most is an unforgettably heartbreaking, heartwarming love story which spans over fifty years. It's the story of an elderly couple who fell in love as young children and fight hard to keep themselves together even when devastating obstacles stand in their way. They finally marry and think they will get their happily ever after, but of course, no marriage is perfect and the terrible awakening to children, money, regrets and deaths would put a strain on any relationship. But as a testament to their bond, just when they finally think they have figured it all out something horribly despairing and unfair will occur and rather than break them, will make them even stronger. Let me ask you a question...would you end your life if your soulmate and love of your life was diagnosed with a death sentence?
Evelyn and Joseph were childhood friends, turned crushes, turned lovers, turned married. They have always been in each other's lives. They have raised three children into adults, worked hard at keeping Joseph's family inn in the family and now are ready to sit back and relax and reap their rewards.
But today, as they gather their children and grandchildren around them, they make an annoucement that will shock and stun all those who love then dearly. It has been discovered that Evelyn is very sick and dying. She does not have long to live. So Evelyn and Joseph have decided to take one more year and enjoy their children and grandchildren and do some bucket list items and after the year they will die together by their own choice.
Of course, the children are angry, devastated and heartbroken, and some will try and make them change their minds, others will have their mind changed for them. During the progression of the last year, the reader is taken on a journey back in time to discover how this endless love came into existence and all the trials and tribulations they have all endured during the years. It will follow the passage of time of all their lives, and we will witness questionable attractions, many regrets, fights and even years long separations which are not understood.
But through all they have remained a family who love each other desperately and will help each other in any way possible. Although the years have sometimes been hard, their foundation may have cracked but it never broke and now as they all try and grab every single second they can with each other, and grapple with the loss which is sure to come, is it possible to be at peace with this decision which Evelyn and Joseph have made?
The Days I Loved You Most is a powerful tribute to love and life everlasting, as well as the heartbreak of knowing you must let go of all you love in this world but knowing you will be together for eternity.

Wow, what an emotionally gripping story. This book hooked me from the start — a woman coming to terms with her illness, and her husband who can’t live without her, decide they will end their lives in one year. As you can imagine, their family can’t possibly understand their decision. I enjoyed the nonlinear timelines, and multiple POVs. I enjoyed seeing Jospeh and Evelyn reflect on their life together. There’s beauty, pain, sadness, and challenges along the way, but this was a touching story. I would definitely recommend if you enjoy an emotional read.
This is a very emotional read as it looks back through a couple's life-their start, their struggles, and ultimately their ending. I relate it to the television show This Is Us in book form as it goes back and forth through timelines and different characters points of view. Overall, I liked this book, but it lacked some of the "wow factor" that would make me rate it higher. I would recommend for those who want a life reflection and possibly a good cry.
"The closeness that comes from being tested and coming out the other side. " ~ Amy Neff, The Days I Loved You Most
"Steadiness over time is what makes it beautiful."~ Amy Neff, The Days I Loved You Most
This book was not what I expected, but it was beautiful. And it did make me cry and it did hold my attention despite other things that were going on this week.
This book is set in 2001, when an older couple makes the decision to take their own lives at the end of the year because she is diagnosed with a disease and in a year will be in a pretty bad place. The story is told in the POV of the husband, wife and 3 children and goes from present day back to the past memories of childhood, falling in love, early marriage and the children growing up. It is a beautiful story and made me very grateful for my own long, happy marriage ❤️
I related to how the wife felt she lost herself, when the children were young and then how the husband was concerned about her when the children grew up and their nest was empty. It is not easy being a woman.
I was thrilled to come across The Days I Loved You Most by a local author, especially with its New England setting that captures the region’s beauty and nostalgia in the summer. The story of Evelyn and Joseph, who fell in love on these shores in 1941, is both heartbreaking and profoundly touching. Now, as they face a devastating diagnosis, they make the difficult decision to end their love story on their own terms, bringing their family together to share their final year. Watching them revisit their life together, from the joys to the regrets, is a poignant journey that celebrates enduring love. Spanning historic moments from World War II to 9/11, this novel beautifully highlights the resilience of human connection. It’s an emotional tribute to love and legacy, and though the story tackles difficult choices, it ultimately leaves you with a sense of hope and beauty that lingers long after the final page.
The Days I Loved You Most by Amy Neff was a sweet and compelling love story, I could not help but think of The Notebook as I was listening to the audio version of this story. I noticed a few similar lines such as “what do you want?” “It’s not simple” as well as using “I’ll Be Seeing You “ by Billie Holiday as a song playing on the record as was used in The Notebook movie. Maybe it’s new to generations that haven’t read The Notebook but to me it felt as the concept was copied and expanded on more in depth. With that said, I liked learning about Evelyn and Joseph’s children's different personalities and experiences growing up. The book followed all their lives since the time Joseph and Evelyn met. I enjoy a dual timeline story. Will recommend this book for a sweet love story!
This was so heartwarming and sad to read. Anything about illnesses really hits close to home. If you’re looking for a fluffy romance book, this is definitely not the one for you, but I completely recommend it. It is so touching to the soul!
I can't say I'm not giving feedback for this book, but I honestly am still recovering. My Gram lived another 25 years without my Pap, and she mourned him everyday. After I helped take care of her in her last 3 years I switched my specialty from pre hospital emergency medicine to hospice. This book is a literal and figurative love letter and I am WRECKED BY IT!
I really wanted to love this book based on the premise, but I kept putting it off and when I finally did read it.It was just okay for me it was a nice story with a lot of emotion but I was expecting a little bit more of a gut check and more romance.
Get ready for an emotional tearjerker with this one. The Days I Loved You Most gives off some Notebook vibes, in all the best ways. We meet lifelong sweethearts, Evelyn and Joseph, who have gathered together their grown children to deliver the devastating news that they plan on ending their lives together because of a terrible diagnosis Evelyn has received. Knowing that they cannot live without one another, they feel this is the only way to end things, despite any protests their children give.
The Days I Loved You Most is so much more than being about their final year together and their children's thoughts on the matter. This incredibly touching novel takes the reader back to the origin of Evelyn's and Joseph's love story, delving into all the joy, beauty, and even ugliness. We learn that despite what we see now, towards the end of their lives, were never as picture perfect, nor was their love. We learn that even the greatest and deepest loves are riddled with the pain, scars, and breaks of the past, that no parent is perfect, that even the happiest of couples struggles through hardship. We navigate their lives and their love story while also learning about all that lies beneath the surface of their children's lives. Even in adulthood, there are secrets being revealed, truths exposed, and parent/child relationships which need healing.
This is a beautiful, beautiful story and I found myself falling so deeply in love with the characters. I sympathized with the feelings of every individual and could see the viewpoints of each, understanding why each is battling for what they believe in.
How deep does your love go? How far are you willing to go to ensure avoiding the devastating heartbreak of losing a loved one? Is it selfish or the opposite? Is it selfish to stand in the way of what this couple has chosen?
An absolutely delightful read, despite the range of emotions! All my thanks to NetGalley, Park Row, and the brilliant Amy Neff for the opportunity to read this ARC as an e-book.
This novel starts with married couple Joseph and Evelyn, 75 and 77, telling their adult kids that they plan to live one more year and then end their lives, because Evelyn has a fast proceeding form of Parkinson’s and Joseph doesn’t want to live without her. The book then alternates showing what happens over that next year with chapters in the past starting when Joseph and Evelyn first develop feelings as teenagers, all through their 50+ years of marriage.
So, I was just never able to get on board with the premise of this novel. Maybe it’s because my parents are that age, but I was just not ok with it. I also just did not buy that Joseph and Evelyn had this epic love story, especially because in most of the flashbacks they seemed more annoyed at each other than anything. I’m normally a big book crier but this one did not wring a single tear from me. I’ve seen a lot of raves for this one, so maybe it was just me.
