Loved The Thai Cookbook. Reading all the recipes I felt like I was traveling to Thailand. All the recipes have easy indications on how to prepare them and the photos were appetizing enough to make me want to try them. Also, I like the introductions of some chapters, I learned more about the food and culture in Thailand. I, definitely, need this book in my library.
THE THAI COOKBOOK by the editors of Chartwell Books is certainly a unique and attractive cookbook, offering "more than 80 delicious recipes, regional styles, and flavors." In addition to standard sections (e.g., fish, meat and poultry, vegetables, desserts), the editors have included multiple recipes under sections about street food, curries, and stir fries. They have also incorporated a few food journeys where they provide more background about flavorings or sweets, for example. The accompanying pictures – of both people and food – are gorgeous. Other options exist for "easy" or "beginner" Thai foods since these recipes are relatively complex, especially in terms of their use of traditional ingredients and spices. A few examples: chicken wrapped in pandanus leaf; curried fish steamed in banana chilis; or Thai fried noodles with prawns. No nutritional information is included, but the editors have incorporated a glossary and useful index; those who enjoy this cuisine will likely find several meal ideas to explore. 3.5 stars
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. These recipes were delicious looking and the photos made my mouth water! I liked the glossary with the Thai name beside each word and substitutions as well.
This book has quite the variety of recipes, and gives some new thoughts about what Thai food at home can be. Some of the recipes are very interesting, yet approachable, for being totally new to me. most of the recipes I can veganize with or without some twists. I am sure Thai food lovers will really enjoy this book!
The Thai Cookbook by Editors of Chartwell Books. I found the recipe book very interesting. I love Thai food but sometimes I find some of the recipes very spicy now that I have the recipes I can experiment with them to find ones that are right for me. I Will definitely by the cookbook.
This cookbook was good, I do have a special diet so I changed recipes to fit it. My family likes to try different cuisine and we are adventurous.
I don't see a ton of Thai cookbooks so it's nice to see some representation for it.
Thank you NetGalley and Chartwell Books for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
This book contains some interesting recipes and the excellent photos were enough to make your mouth water!
Even though I cannot see myself making most of the recipes, I would still enjoy having this book in my cookbook collection. I would also highly recommend it to cooks that are more adventurous in the kitchen than I am.
A wonderful book featuring Thai dishes accompanied by stunning photographs, not only of the dishes, but also around Thailand especially food related. Inspirational recipes, easily followed and reasonably easy to pick up the ingredients being nothing too strange and available in main UK supermarkets. A good selection of recipes which I shall certainly be trying a few out on the family who all adore the deliciously fragrant Thai cuisine.
If you enjoy Thai food and want to try your hand at making it yourself, this cookbook is a good place to start. There’s a wide variety of dishes for every skill level, and something for every palate.
For those that are new to Thai cuisine, the cookbook starts with a four-page article that introduces readers to a bit of Thailand history, geography, culture, and influences. It also touches on foods easily found in Thailand, and describes table manners and etiquette. It’s always good to have some grounding in the country of origin of the food you are cooking.
The cookbook is divided into logical groupings: snacks and street food, soups, salads, fish and shellfish, meat and poultry, curries, stir-fries, noodles and rice, vegetables, and desserts.
A glossary and index are always welcome features in any cookbook. In addition to those, The Thai Cookbook includes a detailed glossary describing the Thai ingredients required for the recipes. I enjoyed reading the entire glossary, from Asian shallots to yellow bean sauce. I learned so much about foods I had never heard of before.
Photography plays an important role in recipe instructions. We need to know what we’re aiming for. How should our food look? Did we read the assembly instructions correctly? Photographs are not only inspiring, they confirm our work. Most of these recipes are captured in beautiful photography, though there’s a few in each chapter that are not photographed. I’m not sure why they didn’t go for 100% when they were already at about 90% of recipes photographed.
The Thai Cookbook should make a welcome addition to your cookbook collection, especially if you enjoy learning about other cultures and cooking beyond your own country’s borders.
My thanks to the Editors of Chartwell Books, Quarto Publishing Group, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital review copy of this book. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Thanks to Netgalley and Quarto publishing for access to this Arc in exchange for my honest review.
I loved the photos in this book, making me travel to Thailand and the food looks so yummy. I don't eat a lot of ingredients (due to health issues), but if you don't have any allergies or health issues, you'll probably be drooling on the pictures and want to try the recipes.
What a beautiful cookbook!
I loved reading about the history of Thailand and how food is so integral to religion and community.
I'll confess before reading this, I knew very little about Thai food apart from satay and fragrant soups full of ginger and coriander (admittedly, not my favorite ingredients). I love that this has little introductions at the top of each recipe, explaining how to get the best of the dish.
My number one complaint about most cookbooks is the lack of pictures, but there are so many stunning photographs, both of the food and ingredients and of life in Thailand. I'm so looking forward to cooking my way through this book. It makes me want to visit Thailand.
4/5 and not 5 stars just because there are some specialty ingredients that I don't feel are explained well enough or if there was any more readily available substitute.
*Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Beautiful pictures and story, but was hoping for recipes of some favorites to make at home and there aren't many in here. Some obscure ingredients and some very plain recipes (grilled chicken in a cookbook?!) I do look forward to trying a curry or two though!
I was really excited to get a copy of The Thai Cookbook as I am someone that loves and frequently has Thai food.
I think this book is perfect for people who are already familiar with thai food and want to expand their knowledge. This is not something I would recommend to beginners and people who aren't familiar with Thai food. The recipes sounded amazing and had an authentic feel to them, which I really appreciated. I think the book could have used more pictures and details on what some of the dishes were as well.
I am definitely saving some of these recipes for the future when I am craving thai food.
Thank you Quarto for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was hoping there would be a good pad thai and pad see ew recipe in this book. Unfortunately, there was not a pad see ew recipe but and the pad thai/ pad thai style dish wasn't exactly what I was looking for. That said, I've never been to thailand so I am not entirely sure if what I was hoping for was American-style Thai or if this was perhaps just not my cup of the tea.
I'll be trying the curries next. There are quite a few recipes and photos in this book which I appreciated.
The photographs in this cookbook make you instantly want to cook the food. The recipes are very clearly and easy to follow. A book that I will keep dipping into
Lovely looking and tasty recipes based on easily accessible ingredients although pandan and banana leaves might prove a problem here in SW Scotland!. Straightforward recipes covering the main sorts of dishes - soups, fish, meat, vegetables, desserts. Measurements in metric with imperial in brackets. The end section of curry pastes, basic sauces and so on is very useful and will let a more adventurous cook make their own modifications easily. There are interesting and relevant notes about the different cultural aspects of Thai food but not such as to detract from the recipes. The recipes are mostly quick to prepare which might just encourage people who "don't have time to cook" to have a go - tasty, quick and better for you to DIY food! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
Excellent resource if interested in Thai food. Not a great book for vegan/vegetarians, but with some modifications, still nice recipes to work from.
the pictures in this book are enticing, the recipes are clear and easy to follow, without requiring too many special ingredients. I loved that there are also other pictures included of the streets and shops. I am excited to try the recipes in this book!
I have often enjoyed going to Thai restaurants and getting Thai takeout from the small place near where I live. Now, with this book of recipes, I can try my hand at making Thai food at home.
This title covers everything from snacks and street food, to soups, salads, fish & shellfish, curries, stir fries, noodles, desserts and more. The photos alone will make cooks hungry!
Each of the 80 plus recipes has a short introduction that is followed by photos and the directions. The recipes may not be for absolute beginners but that is for each cook to decide. I do know that they all look delicious.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
Love this book!. The pictures, the history, the recipes.. oh my! The first few pages of the book include the history of Thai cooking and some interesting factoids from today including regional cooking. Chapters include the regulars such as soups and salads and also street food, curries, noodles etc.. and each chapter starts with a mini-lesson of that category.
If you are going to cook from this book, (but it is legit to just get it for the pictures), you may want to take a trip to an Asian grocery for some of the recipes. There are some simpler recipes but in addition to 'mainstream' Asian cooking ingredients such as ginger and bean sprouts and fish paste, there are a few recipes that include things like also lime leaves (kaffir), preserved radish and bird's eye chilies. But I think many of the recipes can likely be made with a bit of scouring around your local grocery or googling substitutions.
In my opinion, all cookbooks should have ample pictures and this one does not disappoint. I can't wait to try out all the delicious recipes.
I was given a copy of the book by the publisher, but not required to write a positive review.
