This is a great little beginner guide to divination. I highly reccomend it.
I just reviewed Divination for Beginners by Liz Dean. Thanks to Netgalley for an e copy.
I was not sure what to expect in this book and anticipated a very fluffy overview of the multiple divination techniques, this is definitely not the case!
This book is well written with multiple solid examples of how to make use of each of the modalities as well as some space clearing to set the scene mentally and physically before embarking on using divination. I was pleasantly impressed and have now added the book to my kindle collection.
I read 'Divination for Beginners' by Liz Dean through Netgalley, and this is my honest review.
'Divination for Beginners: simple techniques for manifestation and predicting the future with cards, crystals and more' has seven chapters on the following topics: crystals, runes, tea, palmistry, tarot cards, numerology and crystal ball.
I read through each chapter and found some of the topics interesting, since I've been looking into runes, crystals and tarot for a little while. I did not, however, think about palmistry or numerology or tea as a divination tool for me, and I'd never thought about the crystal ball at all! I think this is a good book to start with on those topics if you are curious, but as with every other how to guide, I prefer to follow it up with my own research (other books, internet search and talking to experts in that subject area). I found the tarot cards chapter particularly interesting and well done in terms of explainations and pictures.
I feel that my own UPG made it difficult for me to enjoy this book as it was intended, and that if I had no prior knowledge in those topics, I could have enjoyed this book more. I would recommend this book to anyone just starting their journey with those subjects. This would make a cool present for Yule or a birthday (or a just because present, a self care present, why not?)
This is a lovely guide to different types of divination for beginners. It covers the typical tarot and includes details of tea leaf reading, palmistry, astrology, numerology, crystals, runes and more. It provides a basic understanding of finding the method that best suits you while providing a great comprehensive guide.
This book gives basics on a variety of divination methods. I knew many of them except the crystal ball and how it works. This is a great starter for those who want to learn (I would encourage more research into each method or ones you find useful). The colors were lovely and the drawing added to the over all look.
This is a very short, very basic book introducing the reader to several kinds of divination. The author covers everything from crystals to runes to palmistry to tarot to crystal balls. There is even an explanation about how to get the materials you need and how to care for your equipment.
As someone who was honestly just curious, I appreciated this bare bones approach. Thanks to NetGalley
I think we have all wanted to know the future...especially if lottery numbers were involved! LOL. But was curious about this title has I have some older teens in my library that have expressed an interest in tarot, runes and other means of divination. I think this provided a great overview. I plan to purchase a copy for my older teen that have expressed curiousity. Thank you!
Pros: Although I am not interested in practicing divination, I want to learn more about it so I can be respectful of those who do (and not just think of it as a class the students take at Hogwarts). I appreciated that this is truly a book for beginners and that it gives an overview of several methods of divination. I was most interested in learning about the crystals because through friends it is what is most familiar to me. I really liked the visual nature of this book and think it makes a great primer and reference book.
Cons: None that I can think of. I know that, because of its subject matter, this book will not be for every reader, but for those who are eager to learn or get an overview, I think it will be a great fit.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds, New Shoe Press for the opportunity to read this book.
This is a quite generic book of divination techniques that covers basics of palmistry, tea leaves, tarot, runes, etc. I’m not a big believer in these things to begin with (although I’ve studied them extensively) but I at least want the author to introduce herself and tell how she got into this and what makes her qualified. Instead, this was all presented like a well illustrated car manual. This is the sort of information you can pick up in a check out line. It’s absolutely fine for what it is, but don’t expect to develop any sort of true abilities here.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
Great Divination Book for Beginners
Liz Dean has provided simple techniques any beginner in divination can learn. She begins, firstly, by explaining what crystal reading is, stating that one would interpret a group of crystals that fall randomly or are placed in a layout. Further adding that interpreting the random fall of crystals is known as stonecasting. She provides a list of many crystals and their divinatory meaning.
The author discusses the importance for cleansing your crystals stating that cleansing removes any energies they may have picked up on their journey to you. Additionally, she provides and discusses the following methods, any of which you may choose or use another preferred method:
1. Water
2. Sunlight or Moonlight
3. Incense or Smudging
4. Breath
5. White-Light Visualization
Secondly, the author discusses divination with Runes by explaining that runes, a sequence of literal and symbolic letters, are the ancient sacred alphabet of the Germanic peoples of northern Europe. She discusses the various types of runes, the letters in each, their meaning, and their interpretation for each of the following runes:
• Frey’s Aett
• Hagalaz’s Aett
• Tyr’s Aett
Additionally, she goes further by discussing reading the runes.
Thirdly, Liz Dean discusses divination with tea leaves stating that tea leaf reading as a divinatory art has been handed down from mother to daughter, as an unwritten wisdom that in some families has become an honored tradition. She discusses how to read tea leave, how to interpret your cup, and provides an indepth listing of tea leaf symbols.
The author discusses various other divination methods such as Palmistry, Tarot card reading, Numerology, and Scrying with a Crystal Ball.
The is, thus far, one of the best written books on divination for beginners that I've read. It is definitely a must have for a beginner, and a great reference book for anyone practicing divination.
I highly recommend.
