this was cute although it did start to lose my attention towards the end, and kind of just fell flat. there's something about the writing i was a little put off by but i can't figure out what. one of my big pet peeves in contemporary romance is when there are references to our social/real world today, like mentioning tik tok and actual memes (that homer simpson meme reference was not enjoyable) and there was a decent amount of that in here so it kind of turned me off. all in all a good book, maybe a little mediocre but not bad

This book gave Practical Magic vibes, intertwined with music, some very fierce sisterly love, and a slow-burn romance. This was a fun, unique story about the 3 daughters of a rockstar/deadbeat dad. As adults, two of the girls go into the music business, but the main character wants nothing to do with music thanks to the strained relationship with her father. When life pulls the rug out from under her, her and her sisters half jokingly cast a spell (like they did for fun as kids) and make 3 wishes to better certain aspects of their lives. Soon after that, the main character gets a high paying job offer "babysitting" a rockstar with a deadline to finish an album. She is eager for the great job opportunity and knows being secluded in a house with a rockstar won't phase her, until she finds out the rockstar is the guy she just had her first ever one night stand with, and now they are to be alone together in a house for 6 weeks. She tells herself it will be fine, because she wants nothing to do with rockstars. But the chemistry between them is undeniable, which makes for a very interesting 6 weeks alone together. 😉 This was everything I want there to be in a romcom. I totally loved this book from start to finish!

Clementine Monroe has always sworn she'd never get involved with a musician. Being the daughter of an aging rock legend certainly means she has valid perspective on this declaration.

Then, after a series of terrible events - her boyfriend cheating then breaking up with her, losing her job, and losing her apartment - Clem finds herself forced to take a job she definitely doesn't want: working for off-limits rock superstar Theo Elliott while he does some label mandated seclusion to get is long-overdue album completed.

Not only will they be alone together for six weeks, but Clem is not about to break her number one rule even if she finds him ridiculously attractive.

I'll be honest and say that I swear when I first read the synopsis for this book that it had a more literal magical supernatural element rather than the figurative one that it turns out to be. From the spell the sisters perform, I kept waiting for a good portion of the way into the book for real magic to happen, but what we get is more happenstance. I was happy to be dissuaded of this early on so I could get down to enjoying the rest of the story as it's meant to be because it kind of surprised me.

I loved the slow burn of Clem and Theo's relationship. I wasn't expecting it to build up the way that it did and I think that's what surprised me most about the story. As someone who regularly reads romance, you start to get a feel for where a storyline is going and when things diverge it's always a good thing.

And I really liked that it's kind of a different perspective on the child of a rock star story. A little more subdued. Clem wants nothing to do with that fame and lifestyle. Her and her sisters had enough of it forced upon them just based upon who their father is and she wants none of the scrutiny. This does effect her initial perception of Theo. I liked seeing the contrast between Theo and Clem's father. Her father comes from what seems like a bygone era.

It was also interesting to see how each sister had their own path in the business (or lack thereof in Clem's case), but were still extremely loyal to one another. The back and forth between the sisters was what initially hooked me into the story. I wish we could have gotten more moments with them together actually. Hopefully, there will be books for Lil and Serena next so we can see more of that sisterly bond.

Overall, I liked that this one wasn't entirely what I was expecting. It was a much softer a slowburn story than you would expect when dealing with rock stars and I liked that change.

Under Your Spell follows Clemmie Moore, who when we meet her, has just been fired from her dream job, cheated on by her now-ex boyfriend, and is in danger of losing her apartment. Needless to say, she is having a rough time. In an effort to cheer her up, Clemmie’s sisters, Lil and Serena, get her drunk and then decide it might change her luck for the better if they revive one of their favorite childhood rituals, the Breakup Spell.

Soon after, Serena approaches Clemmie with the perfect job offer to help get her back on her feet. It’s a six week gig to basically babysit her label’s reclusive rock star, Theo Elliott, at an isolated beach house, and make sure he finishes writing his overdue album. Clemmie is hesitant to take the job because she has issues thanks to her dad, who is an aging rock star, but reluctantly agrees since she really has no other prospects at the moment.

Clemmie doesn’t want to be interested in Theo because of what her dad put their family through, but she can’t deny that Theo is irresistible. I adored both Clemmie and Theo and I loved how not only did they have incredible chemistry, but they also just perfectly balanced each other out. They both had issues from their pasts that they needed to work through, but I loved that they not only had a lot of fun together hanging at the beach house as they grew closer, but they also just made a great team in every way. I especially loved this for Clemmie since the rest of the men in her life have been such losers. She deserves someone wonderful like Theo who is so supportive.

The romance is swoony, but what really made this book such a special read for me was the bond between Clemmie and her sisters. If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know I’m a sucker for a good story about sisterhood and I love how close these sisters were, especially since they only shared the same dad because apparently daddy rock star really got around.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into Under Your Spell since I hadn’t heard much buzz about it at all, but it has ended up being one of my favorite romances of the summer so far!

I DNF’d at Chapter 13. It felt very choppy to me and some things I didn’t really understand where they were going, but not in a suspenseful way. I’m sure the first ex is relevant later on (at least I would hope), but to the point when I read it felt like it was being overhyped. I felt like the sisters especially Clemmie read really young and I didn’t care for that. This felt like it was going for a Practical Magic vibe, but didn’t quite achieve it.

This is really a good book. The two main characters are Clemmie and Theo. Clemmie and Theo meet at a funeral. There is an instant attraction. They have a one night stand. Several months later they meet again when her sister gets her the job of babysitting a rock star. She is suppose to help him stay on track. She doesn’t know that the rock star is Theo. He doesn’t his assistant is Clemmie. They work together for six weeks while he writes songs for his album. When they are getting ready to leave he says he needs to back to the states and breaks up with Clemmie. They land reuniting and fall in love.

UNDER YOUR SPELL came highly recommended by lots of bookstagrammers, so I was eager to try it out because I typically enjoy a “Hollywood” type romance. I really enjoyed this one! It had great banter, witty writing, a solid romance, and and excellent sister relationships. I appreciated the pro-therapy aspects of this book, the slow burn progression of the romantic relationship, and the overall character growth. This was a winner of a debut and I will definitely read more by this author in the future!

It has to be true that those who have raised us as children definitely have an impact on the rest of our lives.

Under Your Spell by Laura Wood is a cute rom-com book. If you were raised by a "crazy" rock star dad, would you want to date another rock star? Clementine was raised, with her two older sisters, in a family with a rock star dad who wasn't exactly there for her as a child. When she is hired to help keep an eye on rock star, Theo, for six weeks, life gets even crazier.

My favorite part was when the three sisters were together. They made me laugh, and I could easily picture each character. As someone with two older sisters, I could easily relate to their antics and banter when they are together.

I gave this book four out of five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books, and Laura Wood for my free copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Under Your Spell by Laura Wood is a fantastic contemporary romanced set in the music world but one of our leads definitely will *not* date a celebrity! A perfect rom com!

I really wanted to like this one since it gave me 2000’s teen Halloween/Mammia Mia rom com vibes but I found myself not being pulled back to it when I would pause reading it. Ultimately it just kinda fell flat for me and left me with something to be desired of something.

Thank you Atria Books for sharing this ARC with me.

Simply put, I adored this book. Rarely do I finish a book and want to pick it back up again. I haven't felt his way about a book since I read Emily Henry's Book Lovers.

Clemmie is the daughter of a rock icon, raised with 2 sisters (born months apart) by their mothers in a single household. She is the one sister who stays away from the limelight and wants a career as an academic. Theo is a global rock celebrity who is everything that Clemmie wants to avoid in life. The whole story is a delight, from beginning to end, with a very happy ending.

This was an unexpected find for me. I could definitely see this one as a movie or short series on a streaming platform. Clemmie was a likable character with an unusual life as a rock star's daughter. Her relationship with her sisters and their mothers was a great element to this story. While it falls in the romance category, I would also put it with women's fiction. I am recommending this one to readers from New Adult to the more seasoned readers. Definitely a good one for the beach/pool bag for the summer. I look forward to what is next from Laura Wood.

I enjoyed this even more than I thought I would! I loved the idea of becoming more comfortable and happy with yourself while also not giving up who you are. Theo Elliott is also beyond swoonworthy!

Huge thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! For one, the protagonist, Clemmie was a great POV to read from. She was hilarious - the humour in this book in general was top-tier - relatable, and I loved watching her gain confidence and find out what she wants in life. Her dynamic with Theo was just...everything. So understanding and electric, tender and sweet and hilarious.

The standout, aside from the fantastic romance, was the emphasis on the relationship between Clemmie and her two sisters. It's apparent from the start how important their friendship and loyalty is to each other, and it was just heartfelt and beautiful to read.

Overall, a wonderful rom-com that you'll fly through and love!

I absolutely adored this book- it totally surprised me. Such a great adult romance debut! Had the perfect balance of a very real sweet love story, laugh out loud funny, and I loved the spin on a famous-normal person trope. SO SO good!

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC publication for an honest review.

This was my first book by this author, and I am immediately impressed! Talk about a magical book...

I adored the romance, and it filled my ever, romantic loving heart with joy but the sister (and their moms) relationships also fully captured my heart! The whole book had a unique premise: a rock star who fathers (or should I simply say, impregnated!) 3 different women who give birth within months of each other. The mothers and their daughters form their own family unit. All of them totally ROCK, independent, but also so supportive of each other! Their baby daddy, not so much...boo hiss!

This was a hilarious and fun book with some emotional depth. The romance was sweet and swoony...oh, Theo, definite book boyfriend alert!

Insanely delightful.

This was chaotic and funny. I loved it. I giggled the whole time. This would be perfect for late summer/fall. And the girlies who love a sick/caretaker scene? This is for you.

Clementine is the daughter of a legendary rock star. After a bad breakup, she and her sisters half jokingly cast a spell to curse her cheating ex while making 3 wishes for Clementine. One of which is for hot sex. She decides to have a one night stand with a stranger. The problem? Soon after, he ends up being someone she has to work with. In a secluded cabin. Alone.

Just know that contrary to the premise, it’s very nearly closed door. Like 85% of the way to closed door. Pretty minimal spice.

The length had me procrastinating staring this book. It looks like the final US version has been edited down, so that’s good to know. I’m so glad I finally read this. I only wish that it had been dual POV.

Also, if a man cheated on me and then took my cat to go live with the woman, I’d be throwing hands.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for my advanced digital copy!

Delightful friends to lovers, forced proximity romance between two thirty-somethings, one a famous musician and the other a recently furloughed college professor and daughter of a rock legend suffering from Peter Pan Syndrome. Set in the England countryside, it’s all about the downside of fame and the loved ones who get figuratively trampled in the frenzy of paparazzi and rabid fans.

Thirty-three years ago, rockstar Ripp Harris managed to impregnate three women (only one of whom, Dee, the narrator’s mother, was his wife). When the truth came out, Dee bought a farm with the divorce proceedings and invited the other two soon-to-be moms to live with her, where they raised three beautiful daughters together. As the girls grew, they dubbed themselves The Weird Sisters and fancied themselves witches. When Clementine (Clemmie) experienced a devastating heartbreak at age 17, the breakup spell came to be. Fast forward fifteen years, and Clemmie, after losing her latest adjunct faculty post, has just been dumped by her long-time, live-in boyfriend who took all the furniture, stole her cat, and moved in with his pregnant girlfriend. What better excuse to cast another spell, cursing the ex, and then making three wishes to heal Clemmie’s broken heart: Serena, the record producer, wishes for hot sex, Clemmie wishes for a job doing what she loves, and Lil, the folk singer, wishes for a big, soulmate kind of love.

Within days, at the funeral of a close family friend, Clemmie can’t help but notice the handsome pallbearer, and is thrilled to fulfill Serena’s wish for her with the gorgeous man, Edward/Teddy. So, imagine her surprise when Serena convinces her to “babysit” megastar and rumored womanizer Theo Elliott (long overdue with his next album) for six weeks in a secluded home far from London, and she discovers he’s the same man she snuck out on but can’t get out of her mind. But after being rejected by her father and her teen love (also a musician), the last thing she’s going to do is make the mistake of loving a musician a third time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, steamy romance set in England and the honesty, care, and vulnerability that Clemmie and Theo share. Author Wood does a fantastic job of fleshing out her characters and giving readers a solid depiction of female support and empowerment between the three “sisters” and their mothers. I am thankful that Theo isn’t the stereotypical musician (as is Clemmie, as it turns out), and really enjoy his snarky, Type A assistant David who reminds me of Joel Kim Booster’s character in the show Loot. I’m not usually a fan of a single female character POV, but, in this case, readers get a good sense of who Theo is and how a highly-successful music career, that began as a boy band member in his teens, has negatively impacted his life.

The only minor issue I had was that her sisters, who obviously knew who Theo was, never clued her in. In her total rejection of all things musical, she avoided social media and current music, so being ignorant of who he was made sense, but Serena should have made the connection before offering her the job. Of course, there would have been no story in that case, so I let it slide. If you’re a fan of Christina Lauren, Emily Henry, and Abby Jimenez, you’ll love this book. Highly recommended!

This book is charming, funny, and romantic, and I highly recommend it. Clementine Monroe's life is falling apart. She's lost her job, her boyfriend informed her he was marrying another woman (who is pregnant), and took all of the furniture *and* her cat. She is moving out since she can't afford it alone. Clemmie is feeling a little numb.

Fortunately, her two sisters have come to help her pack what is left in the apartment. I loved the three of them - they were born close together from different mothers. Their philandering father is a rockstar who is still philandering and still performing. Clemmie's mother used to perform but has stopped.

Clemmie pulled herself together with the support of her sisters, found a job, and even went out for an evening where she had a one-night stand, which was very unlike her. It turned out that her one-night stand was the man with whom she would be working. Just a little awkward.

I received an e-arc of this book from Atria Books via NetGalley, and voluntarily read and reviewed it.
