I'd like to thank NetGalley for this E-ARC, and want to say that all opinions remain my own.

This romance worked so well for me. I found Emily and Mark to be so compatible, but it took a bit longer for that to develop then I would have liked. I especially would have liked more moments of them together before the 50% mark

I loved the writing, and am for sure going to be looking into the author's other works.

I really enjoyed it being set in Canada, and how gentle Mark was. I think the love was woven together so well, and I rooted for them.

Thank you for NetGalley and Atria/ Emily Bestler Books for access to this book. I love me a fake dating trope, and Emily and Mark's fake relationship turned real romance is sweet and fun! This novel focuses on Emily's relationship with her family--she begins her fake dating scheme to put off the pressure her mother places on her, hoping she will marry soon. Her relationships with her sisters are complex, as is Mark's relationship with his father. What a lovely read.

Got a free arc of this book via Netgalley. Thanks!

I’m usually a sucker for fake dating but this one didn’t quite do it for me: I think because the characters are a bit older than I’m used to and fake dating is kind of a childish concept. Also, while I felt Emily and even her mother were fully fleshed out characters, I didn’t feel the same towards the MMC. We got one background story regarding him in the whole book.

I was excited about the obvious nod to pride and prejudice in the beginning of the book, but I very quickly felt bored with the first half. once I made it to "part 2" my interest turned around. I appreciate getting Mark's perspective and I had more investment in the dynamics between Emily and her mom and Emily and her sister Allison. I liked how the author made the Jane Austen premise her own in the second half! It was an enjoyable story.

I loved this charming rom-com about two Asian-Canadians who find love despite their parents' good intentions. I fell for all the characters, including the meddling mom, and the ending only deepened my understanding of them and their characters. Emily Hung is the only unmarried one of five sisters, and her mom is determined to see her married, connving to bring her together with Mark Chan. Of course Emily resists-- but eventually she and Mark agree to fake date to appease her mom. Lots of fun ensues. But despite the shallow premise, there's a deep heart to this book which I loved.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½

This was an enjoyable read, but I had some mixed feelings about it. I liked the main characters, I just wish Mark had a bit more depth to his character. I was fascinated by him, wanting to know more about it. The dialogue between him and Emily was clever and amusing. When the book began including his POV half way through, I was so excited to get in his head. But his POV didn't give me much more about him. He was a man who had a cat and who was really into Emily because she was different from him.

Emily's mother had me laughing out loud. Towards the end of the book, however, I grew tired of her family drama with her sister and mother.

The book dragged with too much internal dialogue at times, a lot of which was redundant.

This book was entertaining and enjoyable, but the execution fell a little flat for me. I plan to continue reading more by this author because this one was a nearly a four star for me.

Steam level: 🔥🔥🔥

I received a complimentary eARC and physical ARC from the publisher.

Parental pressure, sibling rivalry, and fake dating results in a funny romcom that's as enjoyable as the title. You couldn't find a more opposites attract situation in this fake dating scenario that's sure to turn up laughs and chaos. An enjoyable and quick read.
Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC and opportunity to provide an honest review.

DNF @ 20%

Not sure if this is just a timing thing but I didn’t care for the writing style and was struggling to get into it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria books for the ARC!

Fake dating makes me giggle likes it’s nobody’s business, so I was already existed to read this. This had the right amount of romance, drama and cultural examples. Such a cute read!

Thanks Atria Books and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. I enjoyed this one! When Emily Hung’s mom introduces her to her friend’s son Mark Chan, she’s insistent that the two will get married. So even though they don’t get along they begin to fake date. Can they convince everyone that they’re dating for real? And what happens if real feelings start to develop? Full of laughs, sweet moments, and all the warm and fuzzies! Check it out if you enjoy rom coms!

This book was fine. I would say a solid 2.5 stars. Emily had some pretty good one-liners, but I really liked Mark and thought he was incredibly patient. I do wish the book had been structured to allow for his POV to be incorporated from the beginning. Perhaps this would've allowed the author to stop complaining about the publishing process because that got REAL old!

**Thanks Atria Books for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was a really cute and fun fake dating story. I loved that Emily is a relatable character in the story. She is the daughter of immigrant parents and at the age of 33, she is still unmarried. Emily feels that her parents do not recognize her success due to her unconventional career path. I think many readers will relate to her and will support her throughout the story. I liked how the second part of the story was told from the alternating perspectives of both Emily and Mark, which helped me like Mark better. The addition of Miss Margaret Muffin was a cute one! The ending was heartwarming, especially once we learned why Emily's parents wanted to help her find a partner.

Thank you to NetGallery and to Atria Bookd for giving me a copy of the book.

This was a fun, quick read! Fake dating plots never seem to get old.
There were times that I felt the main character was rambling on in her own head, which, although realistic, it would have been nice to have more dialogue or actions. More show than tell. I also feel like there could have been more of a lead up to the romance between the two main characters.
All and all, I think this was a cute romance with an interesting cast of characters.
Thank you Atria/Emily Bestler Books and NetGalley for the ARC ebook.

Why do I like realistic and flawed characters when you're supposed to use books to escape real life? Well, I loved the characters in Jackie Lau's Loves, Lies, and Cherry Pie. Emily is great, I wish we were BFFs, and she may now be in my top 5 female romance characters list. She just seems so real and someone I would absolutely love to go on food friend dates with. Mark Chan (you must always say his first and last name) was absolutely great. I love his logical thought process and how it was a juxtaposition to Emily's more emotionally minded one.

This was a bit of a slow burn which I really appreciate. Lau let the chemistry between Emily and Mark build and I like that it was instant attraction (although who wouldn't fall in love at first sight with a man who wears sweater vests?). I was surprised by Part Two and the change up by adding Mark as a narrator. I was not expecting it, but I liked Mark's 'voice' and reading things from his perspective. This does not mean I didn't love Emily's POV because I absolutely did but it was an added treat and sort of refreshed the book in a way. Emily's family was also great, and I absolutely adore Emily's mother. Normally meddling family grates on my nerves but I did not mind this time. Lau is officially on my must-read author list because I just loved this book so much.

Overall, an absolutely great read!

This book was an absolute delight. It's filled with sweet moments, family drama and great food descriptions.
Our heroine is 33 year old writer and barista Emily Hung. She is being pressured by her mother to meet a man (Mark Chan), that her mother feels is perfect for her. When her mother invites Mark to Emily's sister's wedding, and is seated next to him, she is beyond annoyed. In order to stop her mother's meddling. Mark and Emily come up with a fake dating plan to get mother off of her back. Shenanigans ensue.
I loved all of the characters in this book, Emily's friends and family are all fully formed interesting characters. The plot speaks to the pressure on children of immigrants. I found all insights into publishing very interesting. It also has Jackie Lau's signature food descriptions which I love.
Thank you to Netgalley, Simon and Schuster Canada and Atria Books for the advanced reader copy. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Emily is fed up with her mother pushing her towards Mark Chan, so she decides to fake date him to get her mother off her back. Naturally, she learns there's more to him than she thought.

After narrating from Emily's POV, we suddenly hear from Mark well into the book, and then it kind of alternates. Mark's POV added to the story, but it was odd to not have had it from the beginning. The revelation toward the end was a nice touch. The last chapter and the epilogue ended way too cheesily for me.

I loved this book!! It was fabulous and well done. The characters were on point and I thought the plot was well developed. I would recommend this book to others.

cute and easy breezy but I felt like we didn't get to see enough depth/chemistry to Emily and Mark's relationship, even with the chapters from his POV in part two. also, the sex scenes are well written enough but girl, three orgasms the first time y'all do it? please. there's the fantasy of a romance novel and then there's just ridiculousness.
