Description
Mark Chan this. Mark Chan that.
Writer and barista Emily Hung is tired of hearing about the great Mark Chan, the son of her parents’ friends. You’d think he single-handedly stopped climate change and ended child poverty from the way her mother raves about him. But in reality, he’s just a boring, sweater-vest-wearing engineer, and when they’re forced together at Emily’s sister’s wedding, it’s obvious he thinks he’s too good for her.
But now that Emily is her family’s last single daughter, her mother is fixated on getting her married and she has her sights on Mark. There’s only one solution, clearly: convince Mark to be in a fake relationship with her long enough to put an end to her mom’s meddling. He reluctantly agrees.
Unfortunately, lying isn’t enough. Family friends keep popping up at their supposed dates—including a bubble tea shop and cake-decorating class—so they’ll have to spend more time together to make their relationship look real. With each fake date, though, Emily realizes that Mark’s not quite what she assumed and maybe that argyle sweater isn’t so ugly after all…

This was the absolute sweetest fake dating romance! I loved so much about these characters, but I think what I loved the most was the totally relatable family drama we got on the side. I love fake dating and this one was perfect!
This is my first time reading anything by this author, so I didn’t know what to expect. I’m so glad I read it! I love romances with characters who feel real and are not like stereotypes I’ve seen in other books. The family drama for both Emily and Mark added an interesting subplot and added so much to the characters arcs. Definitely read!!!
If I had to summarize this book in a few words it would be:Cinnamon, spice and everything nice!
This book was funny, touching and has some spice to it. And you guys know I love my spice.
I related to this story so much, the fact that you date someone and your like "Ew I won't like them if my mom likes them" and then it turns out, mother is actually always right.
I give it a 4/5!
Love, Lies, and Cherry Pie was a delightful, funny, and sweet book. This book was nothing like I expected, but it is one of the best romcoms I’ve read.
Overall, this story was about family. Whether it’s chosen or the one you’re born into. Jackie Lau does an excellent job of portraying the pressure of having set expectations from your family. While most of these misunderstandings could be solved with a little communication, we understand that sometimes communicating with family can be difficult.
Emily was so easy to understand and feel for. With her dreams of being a full-time author, 3 jobs, and a meddling mother?? I’d be more than a little exhausted. How she had time to even fake a relationship? I’ll never know. Mark Chan, you are the best!!! Getting his POV in the second half was so surprising, but I loved every bit of it! I enjoyed getting to know Emily’s roommate and friend, Paige and Ashley. Not only did we see the main character’s issues, we got to know about the side characters as well.
Overall, I enjoyed this book so much. I will be looking at more of Jackie Lau’s work. Her writing is wonderful in this book. This was a delightful afternoon read.
Thank you Netgalley and Atria Books for the arc! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Captivating, suspenseful, entertaining novel! This beautiful story kept me on the edge of my seat while I was reading it! Would highly recommend to those who enjoy this genre.
When it comes to Jackie Lau I'm all in. And Lau didn't disappoint. This has well-developed characters and a relationship arc that so sweet. Love, Lies, and Cherry Pie is exactly the kind of book I’m looking for when I’m in the mood for a rom-com.
A special thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so fun and cute! I absolutely love the fake dating trope and think this book did it so well!
Learning more about the publishing aspect of writing a book was interesting. I also enjoyed connecting with the main character and her many anxieties
