I liked this book. It was a quick read. I think it’s great when classics or biographies are made into graphic novels. I think it makes literature so much easier to digest for people who aren’t big readers.

This was an interesting take on Andy Warhol’s life. The art in this was fun. Cause it reflected Andy’s pop art signature.

This book taught we a lot about Warhol’s life. Before I read this I just knew him for his can of soup and artistic portraits. His career was so vast though, I knew nothing about his influences and work in film snd music. I also had never heard of his life changing event with Valerie Solnas. I took a lot away from this fun and different account of Andy’s life.

One of my favorite things about this novel is how easy to digest it is. Oftentimes when it comes to biographies of artists, the verbiage used throughout can be inaccessible and confusing. However, Botton did an excellent job in terms of pacing and comprehension. There are sprinkles of art terms in the novel, but they are presented in an educational , introductory way. This is a great way for people, in my opinion, to learn more about not only Andy Warhol but the art scene in this particular period of time (i.e. Dada, Minimalism, Fluxus, Performance Art). Visually, this novel is beautiful and uses bright, often electric colors to symbolize how quirky and influential Andy Warhol was. I also liked that I was able to see Warhol in a completely different light than what I have been presented with throughout my life. He seemed to be a kind, abundant, and charismatic yet secluded person. Though surrounded by a plethora of people at any and all times, he seemed to value being alone more than anything.

My only criticism of this novel is the way that it ends. I wish there was a more concise wrap-up of the artists life and some sort of overall paragraph of how Warhol shaped the art world. The novel ends rather abruptly in my opinion, but I have a feeling that was done in an artistic way to represent how quickly Warhol lost his own life due to a medical tragedy.

Andy Warhol is one of the most famous icons in the art world. He was a visionary and worked with and along side some of the biggest celebrities. This graphic novel was a good overview of Warhol’s life, however at times it did feel like the author did not go into enough depth which made the entire book surface level. However, it is a good introduction to his life and I LOVED the illustrations.

Good graphic novel, I know it is not an official biography but it’s very accesible and a good start if you are interested in the live of Warhol. Good design and it’s interesting that it’s written in first person

A fun and visual depiction of the life of one of the greatest Pop Artists of all time. Learn about the artist's early childhood life, his formative college years and the complicated relationships that contributed to his unique and iconic style, all told in short, illustrated snippets.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC.

Loved the art style, it was informative, and I liked how major events were comprehended in such a small book. That’s basically his life in less than 200 pages.

This was a lovely and simple non-fiction account of the origins of the famous artist Andy Warhol. Going into this the only knowledge I had regarding Andy Warhol were the little tidbits picked up in my high school art theory lessons and that was a while back so give a girl a break. It's always interesting to delve into the early life especially of famous figures because I think that it helps us make sense of their work. I will say that this graphic novel may not be for those art fanatics who are already deeply involved with Warhol lore as it is a pretty basic and straight forward account of his life, but as the author states in the preface this is an intentional decision.

Obviously I loved the art style used and I'm giving massive props to Marco Maraggi for giving the entire story such a cool feel. If the art had been lacking it wouldn't have felt right for a graphic novel about such an popular artist.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion, Frances Lincoln for the opportunity to read this ARC.

"Andy Warhol: A Graphic Biography" is a graphic novel that shows its readers the life and times of pop-artist icon, Andy Warhol. I thought that this was such a unique way to portray Warhol's life and felt very on brand. It takes the readers to Warhol's life from his early life, his struggles to his rise to fame, and then life during and after it. It also name drops many famous popular artists and icons that Warhol has brushed shoulders with during his lifetime and his relationships with them. It was interesting to see how marketing and art evolved during his time and how they compared and contrasted to now. There was a section in the graphic novel where the author questions how Warhol might/could keep up in today's art scene.

I picked up this book because I am a fan of graphic novels and wanted to learn more about Andy Warhol. While I definitely learned so much more about him (and learned that he was more than just the guy who painted a bunch of Campbell's Tomato Soup cans), I felt like there were parts in the book that were disconnected and the different sections in the book did not flow as seamlessly as it could have. It might just be because of the style of the writing or because it was in a form of a graphic novel, but it felt like there were times when I would just jump from one moment of his life to the next.

I think this is a great addition to any Andy Warhol or pop-culture fan out there learning to know more about him and his impacts to the pop-culture and art scene.

My thanks to both NetGalley and the publisher Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion, for an advance copy of this graphic novel that looks at the life and influence of one of the original Kings of Pop, at least in the world of design, art, and the visual medium.

Andy Warhol was probably the most famous enigma of his time. A man with a gift to see where art was going, and happily leading the way, be it in design, technique, visual, even musical and in film. Warhol had an eye for talent, and an eye on every expense, from Exploding Plastic Inevitable shows, to taxi cab rides home from film premieres, whose diary was loaded receipts. Many thought of him as a strange man in wig, accompanying Liza-with-a-Z to Studio 54, or glooming onto younger artists in a vain attempt to stay relevant. Many have forgotten his early 60's work, the cutting edge style, the design, the ideas, and the ideas he helped cultivate and let loose on the world. Andy Warhol: A Graphic Biography, written by Michele Botto and illustrated by Marco Maraggi is a brief, but telling glimpse into the life of this extraordinary person, telling of his many successes, failures, and the shocking incident that might have made the art die way too soon.

Andrew Warhola, JR. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Andrew was a sickly and quiet child, content to read his comics, spend time with his mother and think about the beauty that the world needed more of. Upon graduating college, Andrew Warhola moved to New York, and become Andy Warhol, working as a commercial illustrator for magazines like Glamour, specializing in footwear. Warhol dreamed about success in the art world, and though he had a few shows of his own, his commercial fame made other artists and taste makers stay away. Until Campbell's Soup Cans, created with his own technique and silk screening process took off. And so did his name. Soon Warhol was opening the Factory, a studio wrapped in aluminum foil and silver paint where artists could work, on stuff Andy could take credit for, share ideas, and create new things. Like films, visual projections and productions. Even musical acts, like the Velvet Underground who Warhol managed, pushed, talked about and crushed on the lead singer Lou Reed. Things were going great until a playwright with lots of problems, decided that Andy Warhol was at the center of all her problems.

A very good introduction to a man that many might have heard of, read about or seen in passing in many media, but might not understand the influence, or the gifts that Warhol had. Much is covered and though much is also not covered, it really doesn't affect the narrative. The story is told pretty much chronologically from beginning to sad lonely end, covering Warhol's growing skills as an artist his ideas, and that long fallow period where nothing seemed to work creatively. The art is quite good, with consistent character usage, and bright colors and backgrounds. The illustrator understood what Warhol believed in and that was to make the world, brighter, shiner, and happier, something every artist should strive for. A very nice introduction to a complicated and extremely talented human being.

Recommended for people who enjoy reading graphic novels and learning new things. I think this is part of a series, and I look forward to others like this. For people who like art and music history, and well drawn collections.

This is a succinct and focussed look at Andy Warhol's life. I'm sure there are many of us who didn't realise quite how many facets there were, to his art. It was interesting to read about the people he worked with and the people who came through his factory. There are works of art that I'd recognise but wouldn't have attributed to him.
The graphic novel was a perfect way to present his biography.
I'd have just preferred it to be a little longer.

What a very cool way to do a biography. Especially for someone like Andy Warhol. I like as well how Botton didn't shy away from the idea that Warhol was the original 'commercial pop artist'. He always saw that influence and reach had to do with how much your art was worth.

The art is great. The biography part is clear and covers Andy's life very well. You could read a heavy tomb of a biography about Warhol and get slightly more information, a deeper understanding of the man. But What this graphic biography grants is a better understanding of the intersection of art and commerce where Andy Warhol operated.

Biography meets culture meets comics. Both the prose and images in this book point to care and attention for a fascinating and enigmatic subject.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me a free eARC of this book.

I obviously knew who Andy Warhol was, as I had studied his artwork in school. But there was a lot about his life that I didn't know about. I learned a lot about him reading this book. I also thought it was clever to write the biography as a graphic novel. A lot of the panels were drawn in a similar style to Andy Warhol's art style. I loved it!

I love the idea of comic biographies. This portrayal of Andy Warhols life is fascinating.

Trigger warning for gun violence.

My experience with "Andy Warhol: A Graphic Biography" left me feeling underwhelmed, as I didn't gain any new insights, and the graphics failed to impress me. I had hoped for a more engaging experience, but perhaps others with different expectations may find value in the book.

If this is supposed to be a high level overview of Warhol's life and career, its execution missed the mark. There were multiple times when the author introduced an idea and then abruprtly moved on like they did not otherwise know how to move the timeline forward... even though Warhol's life has been very well documented.

The illustrations were fairly enjoyable, but didn't really feel steadfast in their execution.

I have always enjoyed Andy Warhol's work but this book made me realize that I really have only seen the popular portraits and pop art. This graphic novel is told from Andy's perspective from childhood until his death highlighting his inspiration, styles, and fame. This book is probably appropriate for middle grade and up.

Book 196 of 200 ~ 2023

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Warhol is an interesting one. I have seen his works and attended a gallery event where they introduced not only his art but also shared more about him.

This gave yet another insight, and as always, there are more layers to peel of the onion. I may have had some prior insights, including watching a documentary, but that doesn't mean you can't learn something new.

Well told.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
