A very fun, laugh out loud book for kids of all ages. We enjoyed reading and the pictures were delightful!
A very silly story about an owl and pig both avoiding monsters in the night together. I think it would entertain littles and be a repeat read.

Hoo's There? is a funny and adorable children's story for children who have a fear of going to bed/the dark.
Horton enjoys stories at bedtime - especially scary stories - but one night, he hears a noise that makes him feel scared. After tumbling into Figgy, who also heard the strange noise, they set out to discover the monster that made it. Obviously, it's not really a monster, and the pair are in for a surprise. This made me smile as I read it as I can remember being a child and bring afraid of the dark and that feeling of relief and happiness when I discovered what I thought something was in the dark wasn't anything like I'd thought once I'd discovered it. Such a cute book for any child, and I wish I'd had a book like this as a child.
This is a very cute story for those littles who are scared of the dark, or to sleep alone!
The content is very cute and easy to understand for my littles (2 & 5). They gave examples of sounds that seem scary to them sometimes at night and opened up a conversation to figure out what some of those sounds are.
The illustrations are colorful and grab your attention. We had fun with this one and I believe this will be a regular.
Thank you NetGalley, Thomas Nelson: Children's, and Kristi Valiant for allowing me to review.
I loved reading this cute story about scary sounds at bedtime! I liked the humor that lightened the scary situation. I also liked that it taught how to make new friends and the fact that not all noises are made by monsters. My favorite part of the book was the illustrations! They were so fun to look at! I highly recommend picking up a copy of this book to read with the littles! (I may just need a copy for myself for those nights I can’t sleep because of all the creepy noises!)
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
"Hoo's There"" is a lovely new picture book that is perfect for word study, rhyming, and learning about overcoming fear. The illustrations are captivating.
So sweet and fun. Vanquishing fears by understanding better the surroundings, noises, shapes, and imagination working. Two great characters and an awesome book design. I love it when the font is playful, colorful, and part of the illustrations.
Their friendship helps them to act braver but it also is a great discovery. Very fun bedtime story, perfect for a stormy night.
Thank you, Publisher and Netgalley for the e-arc.

Kristi Valiant combines humor, imagination, and reassurance for little ones facing their nighttime fears. The story follows Hampton the owl and Figgy the pig as they bravely confront what they think is a scary monster lurking in the dark. Through playful rhymes, adorable illustrations, and lovable characters, Valiant skillfully shows toddlers and preschoolers that the mysterious bumps and creaks in the night are nothing to fear but rather familiar sounds of everyday life.
In conclusion, Kristi Valiant's "Hoo's There?: A Silly Book for the Bedtime Scaries" is a must-have for families looking to add laughter, warmth, and a touch of whimsy to their bedtime routine. This was a hoot! Consider me entertained! Both the illustrations and the story are hilarious. The text is in rhymes (love me a good rhyme) and the entire book is really playful. It was a joy from start to finish.
Hoo’s There? by Kristi Valiant is a fun, short read perfect to help small children deal with being scared at night. But it is also…so much more!
This little board book gives a great model of friendship! The cute characters, an owl and a pig, demonstrate it’s okay to share how you feel with others; we don’t have to face our fears alone. They find a way to work together and solve the problem of the mystery monster.
The fun rhyming words, synonyms, and lots of sound words (onomatopoeia) are great to build a child’s vocabulary. This makes it a wonderful book for little ones to grow with. I really like how the author has many of these words stand out with varying colors, fonts and placement on the pages. As you read aloud, you can use your finger to follow the words moving across the pages; in this way, it will help little ones develop text awareness which is a pre-reading skill.
The illustrations are bright, colorful and whimsical. Kids will enjoy pointing out fun objects and colors or using their fingers to follow the delightful characters of Hampton and Figgy through to the end of the book! Don’t miss one other fun element Kristi includes in her recent books: keep your eyes open for a mouse, a penguin and a hippo!
I was surprised the book didn’t have any mention of God since it is from a well-known Christian publisher, but it certainly sets a fun stage for parents to begin a spiritual discussion and include an added Bible verse such as Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand” (CSB).
All in all, this is a delightful read that offers plenty of learning too. Thank you to NetGalley and Tommy Nelson Publishing for the advanced copy to review with my honest impressions.
"Hoo's There?" follows an owl and a pig who both hear strange sounds in the night and assume it must have been a monster. Together they prepare to scare off the monster only to welcome in a pleasant surprise instead.
This book ushers in the sillies at bedtime with many opportunities for sharing funny sound effects and offers a great introduction to the concept of onomatopoeia. The illustrations enhance the light-hearted mood much to the delight of our Little Readers.
We will post an Amazon review the week of launch.
This book was lots of fun and so were the illustrations. It’s about two animals that hear strange noises at night find each other and then come to realize that the strange noises are them. They become new friends and a lot more fun. The illustrations are bright, colorful and funny. They are a perfect match to go with this.
Thank you so much to Thomas Nelson and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
Horton likes to read monster stories at night but then he hears a scary noise, he tumbles into Figgy and she heard scary noises too. Together they search for the monster and learn it wasn’t quite what they thought.
Absolutely adorable, what a perfect book to teach about being scared, that sometimes a thing that seems really scary or a noise that you don’t recognise can end up being something that doesn’t seem to be what you thought.
I really enjoyed how the two friends didn’t suspect each other, but wanted to help each other until something scared them both and suddenly they realised the monster wasn’t what they thought. I really loved how the monster brought them together and they became really great friends.
The illustrations were really beautiful and I loved looking at them, they matched the story so perfectly. I really enjoyed reading this one and think it’s a brilliant story to read with young children, especially for night time when things are scarier and you don’t always know what everything is.
Cute illustrations and story. An owl and a pig figure out who the monster is they’ve been hearing and fearing. Fun book.
Showing that we make our selves frighten by our own misconception.
Hoo's There? is a beautifully illustrated story about an owl who hears a monster. With detailed colorful pages and sound effect captions, this book is sure to grab the attention of young children.
I received an ARC from Thomas Nelson: CHILDREN'S | Tommy Nelson via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I thought the premise and the illustrations of this book were super cute, but the story itself fell a little flat. My kids giggled at a few pages (mostly because of the illustrations), but they didn’t want to read it the second time I offered. It was a bit clunky to read aloud and it didn’t quite feel finished.
A cute little book for very young readers that might send them to bed with a little giggle. It could even facilitate a conversation about how sometimes your mind is playing tricks on you, when you hear scary sounds in the night.
The art style is nice as well. Cute, simple little story.
A cute read that’s perfect for nighttime. Young children will love all of the different noises happening in this book. I thought the ending was a little abrupt, but I don’t think children will mind that.
HOO’S There by Kristi Valiant is a delightful children’s book directed to kids ages 0 to 4.
Through the funny antics of Hampton the owl and Figgy the pig, the book cleverly addresses nighttime noises and reassures young readers that there’s nothing to fear.
The lighthearted approach, along with charming rhymes and lovable characters, makes it an excellent story for little ones overcoming their fear of the dark.
Short, sweet, and full of heart, HOO’S There is sure to become a bedtime favorite.
I would recommend this book for your own child, or for a gift for someone.
Thankyou to author Kristi Valiant, Thomas Nelson Children’s publishing imprint Tommy Nelson and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this fun book.
