This was great. Just the right mix of naughtiness and gruesome horrific situations to keep attention.
It won't be for everyone. But I think a lot of people will enjoy it.
All of the stories were creative and fun.
This collection was a little underwhelming, I’m sorry to say. While it is technically billed as “new adult horror,” it is promoted like splatterpunk erotica, and I thought that was a fun, deviant, disruptive genre mash-up that would be great for short stories and novellas. Splatterpunk is known to be gory, graphic, over-the-top, inappropriate, and beyond any sense of decency or good taste, and any erotica that comes in contact with that would share those sensibilities. That’s not a genre or style that appeals for everyone, certainly, but that’s what is being sold on the outside of the tin… and it isn’t what I found inside, of the eight stories (five shorts and three novellas), only one felt like it lived in the same area code as that description. Two others were maybe in nearby districts. But the rest, while there were some devious and dark ideas, and occasional, very brief, instances of graphic sexuality, nothing that came close to the shock and awe promised. If the stories were really compelling and interesting I wouldn’t be as let down by the lack of extremity, but in the end I didn’t feel particularly moved or excited by them. None were bad, some flirted with interesting ideas, and across the eight a few different genre ideas are played with. They don’t all feel the same, and any given story was able to hold my attention, but they just didn’t do much for me. The collection is short and you can read it in a sitting, and so maybe if you’re interested in dipping your toes in splatterpunk-adjacent stories you will find something to enjoy here.
(Rounded up from 2.5)
I want to thank the authors, the publisher Blood Bound Books, and NetGalley, who provided a complimentary eARC for review. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It was fun! I am always satisfied when splatterpunk authors include some fun moments next to the gore fest, and I thought the balance was great here. I liked that some tropes or elements were present across the stories, but also each of them felt fresh and inventive. I can really recommend it to enthusiasts of the genre.
I had so much fun with this! This is one of my favorite collections ever! Seriously so gross but so good 😂 my favorite stories were: Grinder, Santa's Package, #deadsealchallenge, and Magick Brew!
Thanks for the arc, netgalley!
This collection was wacky, it was weird, it was entertaining and even a little bit emotional. Petite Mort is a collection of 8 short stories and novellas by Nikki Noir and S.C. Mendes. Below I have listed out the 8 stories and a brief summary of the plot!
Petite Mort by S.C. Mendes and Nikki Noir
Grinder: A Short Story
TW: drug abuse, drug use, sexual content
In Grinder, the first short story in this collection, we meet Ghost and her partners in crime Dean and Sonny. They head to a house to pick up the weed to sell, when the man, Rodrigo, tells them about a new drug called Grinder. From there things start to go sideways. I really enjoyed this, it reminded me a bit of the gothic horror A Cure for Wellness in a way, though with more sexual content and drug content.
Santa's Package: A novella
TW: santaphilia, student/teacher relationship, pregnancy, schizophrenia, self harm, sexual content
In Santa's Package, the first novella in this collection we meet Amber who was visited by Santa during the summer when she was 9 and prophesized to bring her a reward when she's older if she remains good. That day comes when she's 20, and since then she struggles with having a santa kink. After another visit from Santa, Amber begins to believe she's pregnant even though it was just a dream. This whole story feels like what I expect an acid trip to be like. At no point did I know where this was going.
Into the Pit: A short story
TW: mentions of pedophilia, rape, demons
Into the Pit starts us off in the middle of 17 year old Kelly's shift at the Hungry Heifer, where a health inspector is asking about the ball pit. Her 19 year old coworker Renee is loud and obnoxious to people she presumes to be predators, basically any man over the age of 30 thats in the place. Her boyfriend Mike comes to pick her up from work to go out, he hides in the ball pit, where things get weird. Many people have disappeared in the pit over time, but no bodies are ever discovered.
HorrorGasm: A novella
TW: drug abuse, drug use, sexual content, toxic relationship, blackmail, sexual assault, biphobia
In HorrorGasm we are introduced to Molly who is a cam girl that blends horror with sex. She sets up a livestream to open a raffle to #dateafan and things go horribly wrong for her.
#DeadSealChallenge: A short story
TW: genital mutilation, body horror,
At the beginning of #deadsealchallenge we meet Lee and Gary in a rather unfortunate situation. When Gary ends up talking to the cops we’re given the story of how they got to the scene in the beginning. It all started when they found Marley, the owner of some holiday business dead in his home, and decide to rob him rather than calling the cops. They end up finding a seal carcass who they give to a guy to make a mukbang of.
Magick Brew: A short story
TW: sexual content, drugging, alcohol use, spells/curses, cannibalism
Magick Brew follows Heath on a mission to create a love potion to make a woman named Mary fall in love with him, so he resorts to using a forum, where he receives a free spell and accidentally uses it on three women.
The Sack Cutter: A short story
TW: mutilation, blackmail, mentions sexual assault
The Sack Cutter is a short story that starts off inside an Uber. Johnny, the traveler is a big affirmations for success YouTuber, and Claire the Uber driver is a fan who achieved success from his teachings.
Cucumbers and Comforters: A novella
TW: rape, ableism, child death
Cucumbers and Comforters is the last novella in this collection. It starts us off at a party where we’re introduced to Jen who was invited to a party, picked up a cucumber to bring home as an inside joke between her and a young friend and was bullied for it. Dale a young “special” kid in the neighborhood went missing after Jen told him about a river creature named Kappa. This one was probably my favorite honestly, very bittersweet.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book.
what can i say besides wow? this is a collection of short stories that a really well written as well as extremely sexual horror that’s very disturbing. this book is most definitely not one i would recommend going into blind and im definitely not the target audience. if erotic splatterpunk is your vibe then i would absolutely recommend checking it out.
I will start off and say, I thought this was going to be one thing, but it was something entirely different. It just was not my kind of book. The writing is great and the stories are very interesting and unusual. Quite a few things that I would have never imagined. I realized upon this book that major erotica, splatter punk, and some stories are just not for me. I appreciate the book for what it is, though.
In addition to being over the top splatter horror smut, these eight stories are creative, engaging, and all very different from one another.
Some of the highlights for me were how Santa’s Package kept me guessing the whole time and also strangely made me feel a little more at ease with starting therapy soon.
The opening story, Grinder felt like it would make the perfect Cronenberg flick (David or Brandon, you pick).
#DeadSealChallenge was such a fun, modern twist on a classic horror sub genre. As with most of these stories, I will be thinking about that one for a long time.
And maybe it’s because I closed out 2023 reading a lot of RL Stine but Cucumbers and Comforters, the tale that closes the book, felt like a fever dream Fear Street novel. I’m a massive fan of Yokai and the story’s twists and turns were so fun.
If you're not one to be bothered by trigger warnings of any kind and enjoy hilariously gruesome flash horror, Petite Mort is for you. But holy moly, this collection of stories was WILD. Some of the stories had kinda weird pacing at times and only but a few of the characters were mostly forgettable, but overall this was fun and super entertaining.
I've never read anything like this and I'm giving it five stars just for that, even though not every story reached the same level. Even the stories I wasn't as crazy about were highly entertaining.
I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who doesn't have some life experience, because there was horror, lots of sex, and lots of betrayal. I am going to recommend it in my horror groups as a great book of horror short stories.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
these short storys was good, some was better than others, but is it not always like that :) my favorite wasHorrorGasm it was super weried....
Incredibly fun and chilling!
If you like Tales from the Crypt you will enjoy this anthology.
The stories were very strong and didn't leave loose ends. Many times I could not sleep because I HAD to finish the story. Truly if you like your horror sexy with humor, you will have a good time reading this.
This book could be triggering for some, so please check your trigger warnings, especially those relating to sexual violence.
I loved this mixture of shorts and novellas, especially with the horror theme. I found these quick to read, easy to read and overall exciting to read!
I went into this book wanting something different, and it definitely delivered.
It's a shot story collection of extreme horror/erotica. All of the stories were unique and different. Unlike anything I have read before, which was refreshing.
I don't want to spoil anything by going into too much detail. Santa alien erotica, a horror type OnlyFans with a sinister plot, mukbang massacre, a love potion that makes you too tasty to resist, and much more.
This was such a wild ride and I loved every minute of it.
Thank you Nikki Noir, S.C. Mendes, NetGalley, & Blood Bound Books for the ARC of this book.
I did not expect to read what I read. And I might go and look at other works by these authors.
Some of these stories were really good. I especially enjoyed the Horrorgasm one with Molly Massacre. Some weren't my thing.
I received a copy via NetGalley and all opinions are my own.
Got this book for review on Netgally.
It was a great collection of stories and I enjoyed them all in one way or another. My favorite ones where the one aboy the cam girl and the other with santa. Very weird, disgusting but fun read and each story was diffrent and I didn't alphabet any I didn't like.
Gruesome and full of debauchery, a really well done set of short stories, the especially weird ones including Santa and the Mukbang one. Also horrorgasm.
I’m usually not a fan of anthology books but this one was such a fun read. I was instantly sucked in from the first tale of horror and devoured the rest just as eagerly. I really enjoyed how the authors could make you feel so grossed out but also needing to know more. I plan to check out more from these authors. Thanks NetGally for the ebook in exchange for my honest review.
3.5 stars
This was a bit outside of my comfort zone, but I still found it enjoyable. The writing was great, I’m just not a fan of explicit sex. While I can read it, it’s just not for me on a regular basis.
The horror, gore, what have you was what you want and expect within this sub genre or bizarro/ splatter horror.
I’ll definitely check out both authors again based solely on their writing styles and imaginations.
This was very entertaining. I read it in one sitting. Combines sex and horror perfectly. Guaranteed you'll enjoy at least one story in here.
