Anime Art Class Sketchbook is a detailed guide to drawing anime characters. It's a fun and useful tool for creating anime characters.
This was very cute and informative. It made for a great collaboration effort between my kids and myself.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC!
I liked the introduction pages, on how to draw hair texture and clothes the most. I always struggle with hair, and seeing different patterns is really helpful.
I liked that there were manga panels already created for you to fill in, but I wish there were more styles, with different speech bubbles, too. It all felt a little too dramatic, more shounen style than shoujo. I also wish a part of the sketchbook had pages for you to draw the characters first, like a character sheet, and then the manga panels.
Also maybe some sheets to practice colouring or inking would be nice.
I'm not sure how the paper version is, but if the sheets can be easily pulled apart from the book, it would be great. That way you can combine them in the order that you want.
This is a sketchbook for an anime artist of at least intermediate skill who wants to create a comic book but doesn't want to draw the comic book panels. The first third of the book has some very quick reminders about drawing skills. For example, it dedicates a page or less to facial expressiveness, drawing with perspective, drawing hair, and colour theory. The second two-thirds of the book is comic book panels for you to fill in. There are not many different panels and they repeat for the rest of the book. I thought that the book would have more drawing instruction and inspiration. I think that if you could fill all the pages with your drawings you would want to use a blank sketch book so that you could have more creative freedom.
I'm disappointed but that's a user error, not a legitimate complaint. I thought it was going to have tips on creating a comic to go along with the 100+ pages of blank panels. It's a sketchbook with manga panels and some quick stylization guidance. One part of the book explains the basis of drawing characters with Yoai's signature adorable style. The second part of the book features the panels.
I enjoy Yoai's work and I'm happy to see the growth of the Anime Art Class and Chibi Art class series!
Thank you, NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group, for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a simple sweet book - This was actually the perfect choice for me, a beginner.
I found the author's sketches to be lovely, and her reference/teaching sketches and explanations to be excellent!
She also explained the different way an anime character is sketched - and that shows the difference.. I especially found her sketch and explanations about the eyes to be helpful - after all, that is one of the main features (imo) that sets these sketches apart.
Most of the book is pages for you to sketch your own anime story. The instructions themselves were only a few pages - but they are well done.
If you already draw, the Anime Art Class Sketchbook may include enough instruction to curve your talents towards manga. If you don’t draw much (or at all), this book alone will not be enough. Start with one of the author’s excellent anime or chibi art class books first.
The Anime Art Class Sketchbook is mostly filled with pre-drawn backgrounds for the reader to add their own characters to. Only seventeen pages (out of 140) contain techniques and instructions. While the instructions are in color, the backgrounds are not. The backgrounds seem overly simple and repetitive. They are more likely to stifle your creativity rather than inspire it.
For these reasons, I can’t recommend this book. I just don’t see the point. Buy one of the author’s art class books and a blank sketchbook instead. 2 sad little stars.
Thanks to Rock Point and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.
As it says in the title, it is a sketchbook with manga panels. This would be a good physical book for those who like to or want to draw their own manga. At the beginning it does give some tips on clothing, eye, coloring, etc; however, it would have been nice to have more tips and maybe more details.
The information in this book is very useful, and was very detailed on the different aspects of drawing. The end of the book kinda confused me as to why there were so many of the same outlines for comics. If there had been a bit more of a variety with thoughts pages it would have made it better. Overall it was a really good drawing book.
I asked for this manual because my 7-year-old daughter is crazy about drawing, especially those cool manga characters. The book has easy-to-understand language and is packed with lots of useful tips, making it ideal for teens. There are only a few (yet very clear) pages with actual lessons and tutorials, while the rest is full of pre-drawn manga-style blank panels for creating your manga. However, I feel like more instruction could have been added, and maybe fewer blank manga panels at the end.
Huge thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this advanced copy.
This book is not what it seemed to be at first, and at first, I was kind of confused about it. There are only a few pages (like 15% of the book) with actual instructions and lessons. The rest is pre-drawn manga style blank pages to create your own manga. Also, I have to say that the instructions that actually are there, are really good. Yes, the title too says that there are many manga panels, and it is my own fault for not realizing what it actually means, but I’m assuming it might be disappointing for some – or great for others who actually were looking for blank pre-drawn manga panels.
A good follow on book to Anime Art Class which is a firm favourite with my 9 year-old daughter. This is basically all sketchbook with templates to create your own anime stories. I would have liked to have seen some more examples of how to fill the comic strip templates. I think this would have helped my daughter with her own stories and ideas. For anime enthusiasts looking to further their skills, this book is great.
As the title says, this is a sketchbook, ideal for people who can already draw well.
The book has beautiful illustrations and a brief chapter on how to draw some of the characters. However, the rest of the book are blank comic strip.
Ideal for someone to create their own characters and stories.
Would definitely recommend a physical copy of this book.
Very aesthetically pleasing and well laid-out book on how to draw in anime style. I really enjoyed it. While I know the title includes the word sketchbook, it felt like there could've been one more chapter on instruction and maybe slightly less blank manga panel pages at the end. Overall though, awesome and super fun to look at.
This is cool, very informative instruction on how to make an anime sketchbook. Wish there was instruction on how to make the characters but other than that I liked it.
An interesting concept that I think could be fantastic to unleash your imagination and draw your own manga story.
I personally would have preferred to have some more tips and guidelines, but still a lovely book!
My son is a big anime and manga fan so anytime I can find books for him to develop more art skills in one of his favorite genres we just on board. We enjoyed the concept of this, a quick tutorial then over 100 pages to create your own manga. The only thing he wanted more of was male features. He felt this was tailored more towards girls and women.
Overall I can still see us getting this once published because of the create your own manga pages.

I think this book is amazing for child or adult who is interested in Anime and would be a great gift as well. Lots of empty pages in the back to be able to use your skills and create your own Manga! Would highly reccomend to Anime lovers.
This was very interesting. I think it had a lot of good aspects. It showed you exactly what you needed. It had really good references and I think this is great if you’re looking to create your own manga and you need some inspiration or some background ideas or concepts so I would highly recommend, and I would definitely read more from this series in the future.
