My family is thoroughly enjoying this Mindfulness book series! Mindfulness and My Emotions is a fantastic book for encouraging young kids to slow down, pay attention, and grow curious about their inner state by touching on many common emotions (fear, anger, happiness, hopefulness, positivity, sadness, and worry) as well as other character-building traits. The illustrations are colorful and diverse, the text is accessible and the perfect amount for early elementary age kids, and the activities are delightful. I highly recommend this series for parents, teachers, and other caregivers who want to encourage mindfulness in their children and families.
Thank you to Mayo Clinic Press Kids for gifting my family with an ARC to review! All opinions are my own.
Mindfulness and My Emotions is a very sweet short book that introduces young readers to the practices of meditation and mindfulness. It gives great advice on acknowledging and regulating emotions and provides helpful activities that can help create healthy habits. I love how the book mentions "adults" and "trusted grown-ups" without using gendered language or presuming anything about the reader's family.
I found the illustrations amateurish, but they accompany the text well and don't distract from it.
Overall, this is a great little book and should be available in all children's libraries.
This book has really excellent ways of talking to children about their emotions. There's no shaming or negativity. The authors treat emotions the way I think of them -- as information, not as a bad thing. The book is packed with activities children can do to help them think about their emotions. It seems like these are the kind of activities child psychologists or OT professionals would use to work with children and managing their emotions. I could see this being an incredible resource for elementary teachers especially when they notice their class having a hard time with emotions or regulation. I think it would also be a great tool for any elementary advisory program to give scripts and activities without the teachers having to prepare anything. Every child would benefit from an adult working with them and this book! I think it would be for early elementary school but the book does reference writing words and drawing-- something to keep in mind and that you may potentially need to modify. This would also be a great addition as a parenting book for public libraries. Highly recommend!
"Mindfulness and My Emotions" offers a profound exploration of emotions, suitable for both children and adults. While targeted at children, its insights into acknowledging and understanding emotions resonate across all ages. The book presents a diverse array of creative and insightful mindful activities, each accompanied by stunning imagery. Its clear descriptions make it easy to engage with the practices, fostering deeper emotional awareness and reflection. An invaluable resource for anyone seeking to navigate the complexities of emotions with mindfulness and compassion.
One of the hardest things children face is learning to understand and deal with their emotions. Even as adults we struggle daily. I received this as an ARC and am so thankful to have discovered Mindfulness and My Emotions. This wonderful book is packed full of information, ideas, activities and some inspirational thoughts to help children better understand how to identify and understand their emotions. I love the impact of the book and its potential for helping children with some difficult moments. It helps them understand that even the bad emotions can be handled and things will pass. The illustrations are colorful and the design of the book will grab children’s attention without the feeling of being taught. That is important. I loved the different examples of identifying your emotions and ways to help. I highly recommend this book to parents to share with their children. I also think it would be a wonderful guide to use in elementary school and even preschool. Well written and so very helpful to children.
I loved this book. My daughter is 6 and was diagnosed with epilepsy and adhd. Those who epilepsy have a higher chance of having depression and/or anxiety. With starting kindergarten this year, her confidence in school has really been low, and she has been expressing so many different emotions. Not only is it great read for her, but it was a good read for myself as well. I love how this book takes an emotion, and pairs it with something a young child can understand. As example, the author wrote how feelings are like the weather and change often. Plus the activities in the book were a pleasure surprise.
Mindfulness and My Emotions is a series of self-regulation exercises that I can see adding to my SEL curriculum. I will take all of the tools that I can offer.
I absolutely loved this! I’m a school psychologist and always looking for great mindfulness books to read to my students. I loved all of the different examples and strategies that were given. This book teaches children about thoughts and feelings, what to do if you’re feeling certain emotions, and many great activitues/exercises that children will love. This would also be a great book for parents do read with their kids because it will help explain to the adults as well about emotions and how being mindful of emotions helps throughout life. I highly recommend this book if you’re looking to teacher your kids more about emotions and mindfulness!
I really enjoyed how detailed this book was, with very user-friendly descriptions of feelings. The best part were the various activities and visual aids to help readers and children better describe abstract concepts. There were a few moments where the font shifted and it was much harder to read.
This is an excellent book which helps children be mindful and connect that to their emotions. It contains practical advice on how to help children to navigate this as well as helpful explanations for adults. This book would improve the quality of life for both the children and the adults who are reading it.
I love mindfulness. This book has lots of great ideas. The content is presented in an easy to understand and implement format. Love that it is a series.
One of the most difficult things with kids is emotions. Even as adults, most people still struggle with emotions. "Mindfulness and My Emotions" is excellent for kids AND adults. It provides bite-size pieces of info, tips, exercises, and thought-provoking questions to help identify and handle emotions. By relating emotions to the weather, kids are able to really understand how their emotions are always changing and can be different day to day. Just like we can prepare and deal with changing weather, they can prepare and deal with changing emotions.
I really like that the entire book is from a factual point of view. It states what is. There is no shame for emotions. Rather, the goal is understanding and accepting your emotions and what they tell you about how you feel or are experiencing.
Excellent overview of mindfulness and emotions for young children. I especially appreciated the variety of practical exercises. These could also be good for children and caregivers to try together. Very clear. I also appreciated the illustrations and diversity of characters. Thanks to Netgalley for the eARC.
"Mindfulness and My Emotions" by Katie Woolley and Rhianna Watts offers a vibrant exploration of emotions through colorful illustrations and engaging activities. As I delved into its pages, I found the illustrations to be not only visually appealing but also aptly fitting for the book's subject matter.
The exercises provided within the book are clearly articulated and offer a range of difficulty levels suitable for children aged 6 to 8. However, as someone exploring mindfulness and emotions, I couldn't help but notice that some aspects of the book's explanations about emotions felt a bit simplistic. While the book introduces mindfulness as a tool to help navigate feelings, I believe there was room for a more nuanced and playful approach to exploring emotions in greater depth.
Overall, "Mindfulness and My Emotions" is a delightful book that provides valuable tools for children to understand and manage their emotions. However, I feel that the authors could have delved deeper into their explanations, offering more complexity and enrichment to young readers seeking a deeper understanding of mindfulness and emotional awareness.
Mindfulness and My Emotions is a clear, colorful, and compassionate guide to assist children in understanding their emptions, the range of emotions they may experience, and how mindfulness can provide them clarity into their own emotions. The exercises presented with each topic are perfect and age appropriate to help children understand what they may be feeling. I also liked the connections made between mind and body, and connecting emotions with physical effects. Highly recommend anyone who is looking for a book that explains emotions to young children, that also provides them a guide on how to process those emotions by using mindfulness. Thank you to NetGalley and Mayo Clinic Press for this informative ARC.
This is a really good book to read to young kids to help them understand that their emotions are temporary and help them identify what they are feeling. I like the included exercises to increase mindfulness as well as the art projects. I will probably read it to my 9-year-old, but I think he is a little older than the target age range. I think it would be great for 4-7-year-olds.
I liked the diversity of characters in the illustrations (different skin colors and races, some wearing the hijab, one in a sari, one with hearing aids, one in a wheelchair, some with glasses...). I also liked the playful childlike style of the illustrations. They helped keep the mood light.
*Thanks to NetGalley and Mayo Clinic Press Kids for providing an early copy for review.
What a great story, that covers such a wonderful concept, and such fun pictures! It is a little wordy and long but perfect for a child to have the story read to them.
