Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC which will delight any Burton fan out there.
It is no secret that Tim Burton is a cinema Titan and fans will delight in this biography. With pages full of beautiful photos from Burton's films, this book is a beautiful gem.
The biography offers a glimpse into Burton's life, his struggles, his ambitions and interesting fact and tidbits surrounding his most famous works.
I simply adore all of Tim Burton's movies and could not put this book down.
If you are interested in cinema and enjoy Tim Burton's work, I would highly recommend this book.

I have always loved Tim Burton's work. This book celebrates that talent with wonderful imagery from his films and also gives detail on how this were created.
It is definitely a coffee table book for all this film fans out there. Perfect for any collection.

Tim Burton has an unique film making style that is loved by many. The first Tim Burton movie that I saw, in which I was aware that it was a Tim Burton film, was The Nightmare Before Christmas. I saw it in the theater and absolutely loved it! It was a unique film that brought together "cute" and "dark" - not two things that one would think could mesh well. Not only did they go together beautifully, but it gave me a new appreciation for film styles. When I saw that there was a book that explored Tim Burton's film making career, I was eager to read it.
This book begins with a brief history of Burton's childhood and then is broken down into sections based on the types of films made. The first section is title "Happy Horrors" and discusses the films "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice". The second section is "Strange Heroes" and is about "Batman" and "Edward Scissorhands". Additional section titles include: Poetry into Plot, Drop-dead Gorgeous, Head Cases, Time Warps, Just Desserts, Family Plots, and Peculiar Children. Each section encompasses a type of film style that Burton used, and gives some history about how he came to make the films, and some descriptions of the film-making process. The book is chronological, taking the reader through Burton's history of film-making. It includes his most recent works on films such as the live action "Dumbo" and the much-loved television series "Wednesday". I really enjoyed learning about some of my favorite films and now have a list of additional movies that I plan to see.
Thank you to #NetGalley for an eARC of the most recent edition of #TimBurton by #IanNathan in exchange for honest feedback.
-5 stars

This is a new March 2024 edition of a book originally published in 2016. In this fascinating 192-page book, film writer Ian Nathan discusses Burton’s work as a director, from his early animated shorts to the Wednesday streaming series and his upcoming release, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Nathan combines biographical information about Burton, stories and interviews about his filmmaking process, and analysis of the films, accompanied by lots of behind the scenes photographs, stills, and promotional pieces.
I was delighted by the comprehensiveness of this overview and found myself wanting to rewatch many of these films.
At 9 x 10.25 inches, this attractive hardcover book would make a wonderful gift for any Burton fan and be an interesting addition to your coffee table.
Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and White Lion Publishing for providing me with an electronic ARC through NetGalley. I volunteered to provide an honest review.

I absolutely love, love, loved this book!! So worth the read as I’m a huge Tim Burton fan and loved the pictures too!

This book is amazingly insightful into Tim's life and mind in his creations.
Lots of nuggets of trivia, pictures, behind the scenes and a deep look into the Magical world of Tim Burton!
Love how you see the behind the scenes, the mini interviews with his choice of actors for his films. Brilliant read, would recommend

Lovers of anything Tim Burton are sure to enjoy the updated edition of Tim Burton: The Iconic Filmmaker and His Work by Ian Nathan.
Tim Burton's movies are quite recognizable. Featuring gothic and spooky vibes and undertones, each movie is brilliantly written and superbly cast. There is no mistaking the films that are Tim Burton's handiwork.
I love many of his creations including Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, James and the Giant Peach (my favorite book as a kid), and my absolute favorite Tim Burton movies: Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow. These movies, plus others are recounted in this book. I can't wait to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!
Included on the pages are pictures, behind-the-scenes views, and wonderful depictions of Tim's work.
This book explores Tim Burton from childhood through the present, giving readers a glimpse of what makes him tick. This is an amazing tribute to an even more amazing film director. This would be a wonderful gift and coffee table book for those who adore Tim Burton.

This is a fabulous book. There's so much to look at and read that you'll keep returning to it. It's not a book to sit on a shelf, it's a book to keep out and keep flicking through; it's guaranteed to make you smile.
There are pictures from making the movies, actors and sets. There are details about the movies and more importantly about the man!

I really love Tim Burton since I was child. My sister and I used to watch all his movies together so obviously I had to read this book. And whoa! What can I say? It shows you Burton's work over the decades. The pictures are truly amazing and I love the way they are organized.
One of the things I love the most about Burton's movies are the photography, and the film stills that appears in here are just something else. I would love to be a filmmaker someday so reading this was an amazing privilege. Even if you don't love Tim Burton you should take a look because it's gonna surprised you a lot.

The book covers almost the entirety of Tim Burton's career, discussing the evolution of his unique style of art and filmmaking. The reader gets tidvits straight from the sets of movies while the book explores the factors that influenced Burton, the series yet endearing characters, the superhero tones etc. From earlier hits like Wdward Scissorhands to recent duds like Dumbo, the book gives insight into all of them.

LOVED IT. A must read for any Tim Burton fan. I got to learn so much about some of my favorite Tim Burton films. Thanks NetGallery!

A must read for any Tim Burton fans. Includes behind the scene information and look at the making of his films and as we stunning photos of both sets, characters, and Burton's original artwork.

If you're a Tim Burton fan you will enjoy this beautifully put together book analyzing hims works. The actual analysis of which film is more of a surface level look with great images but this book will make for an excellent coffee table book for the Burton fan!

This was such a great read and is very well written. The author went into great detail and made it relatable to many. I really enjoyed this book!

This is a beautiful book, and a must-have for Tim Burton fanatics.
While I was mildly interested in this, I fear it is quite repetitive for casual fans of Burton. The photography is great, though.
Thanks to Ian Nathan, NetGalley, and Quarto Publishing for this copy.

Repetitive and tiresome, this book made me feel like Burton was simply an obsessive filmmaker obsessed with the dark and weird without any actual talent. It also bothered me that there were not actual interviews but more quotes upon quotes upon quotes.
Also, some movies were out of the chronological order he started with, which make this all the more confusing: Why break right there? What was he trying to accomplish?
There were some parts were the author made it clear that even Burton wasn't a big fan of some of his films, but from there to make him look like an incompetent aficionado... the pictures were gorgeous, truth be told, so maybe as a coffee table book it would have been better, but as a big fan of Burton and a critical viewer, this was not for me at all.

2.5 stars
What promised to be an intriguing look at one of the most famous directors of my lifetime fell flat for me. While I was entertained by learning more about Tim Burton and the behind-the-scenes of his filmography, the narrator of this book is insufferable.
The nearly fanatical way in which the author praises Burton and his work comes across less like genuine adoration and more like sycophantic obsession. Even when discussing Burton's movies that were flops or failures, the author still manages to blame this on audiences, studios, Disney – anyone but perhaps, maybe, the guy who made the movie.
I say this as someone who loves Burton's movies, actually. It comes across as disingenuous to not acknowledge Burton's failures as failures.
There's also a huge issue running throughout the length of the book in which the author attempts to interconnect every Burton film and character. Certainly there are running themes throughout much of the director's works, but to say that Alice (as in Wonderland's Alice) is just another Batman and the Mad Hatter her Joker is a bit a stretch. Every character is also either Burton as he is or Burton as he wishes he was. It's insufferable.
And just for one more jab at Nathan for irritating me – maybe use the word dotty less often? How many times can you use that in one book?
Criticisms aside, there are good aspects to this book. The layout of the pages is aesthetically pleasing, and the actual structure of the book in terms of following the director's filmography is well done. The inclusion of the photos from sets, posters and promotional materials, and examples from the works of others who inspired Burton is informative.
If you're just looking for a pretty picture book to flip through every so often and not a book to sit down and read straight through, this is probably an excellent example of what it is. But at the end of the day, I couldn't get past the author's tone and voice.

ok so edward scissorhands is one of my favorite movies so when i got to that part of this book, i was astounded to see the connection between phantom of the opera and edward. i didn't know that!! the juxtaposition between the world edward lived in and the world below was amazing to learn about. throughout this book, you get images and backstory to tim burton's brillance and for anyone that is a fan of his, this book is for you! i thought everything was very well researched and put together.

As a long time Burton admirer I thoroughly enjoyed not only reading about each production of his, but reading about the WHY of each production. Learning about who, and what, fueled his love for the macabre and strange was beyond fascinating. There were even a few productions I completely forgot that he worked on and I'm now compelled to go watch them.

Read from February 29th, 2024 to March ??, 2024. Written on March 5th, 2024.
NEW BOOK RELEASE ALERT!!!
(NOTE: I HAVE NOT FINISHED THIS BOOK YET BUT I AM CONFIDENT IN WHAT I HAVE READ TO GIVE A TRUTHFUL REVIEW)
Okay, Tim Burton. First off, the man behind one of my favourite movies of all time, Corpse Bride, a brilliant creator and one of a kind filmmaker. Has a have mentioned before, I am a film student, so obviously Tim Burton and his movies are quite important to me because I am inspired by their amazing stories and creepy characters. This book is an amazing combination of all I love and want to learn more about, a perfect mix for cinema fans and Tim Burton fans.
The photos with the writing, the chapter divisions and choices of movies to talk about was really a blend of colours and perfect choices to offer the reader the best experience one can have.
Plus, the publisher released TODAY a graphic novel biography of Quentin Tarantino that I fully recommend to be read and enjoyed. I already read and reviewed it and I am so happy that I did.
