What a great story. I want to go to Chatham and be with these wonderful folks. I do like happy endings and these folks were lucky enough to find that second chance. I love the characters and the story line. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.
Pamela Kelley has once again set her latest novel in the welcoming community of Chatham near Cape Cod. She has combined several of my favorite elements such as multiple generations, re-connecting with past loves and frequent mentions of food. It's always fun to recognize characters from her previous books interspersed within the story. I classify this type of book as "comfort food" because it leaves me with a warm and cozy feeling. Thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and the author for an advance copy to read and review.
Riley Sanders has worked for a marketing firm in Manhattan for several years. Today she learns that she and the entire content team have been laid off. It’s early December and that will really impact a lot of people.
Back home with her cat, Lily, Riley hears from her sister, Amy in Chatham that their mother fell and broke her leg. Amy asks if Riley can come for a few weeks to help her mother run her Chatham Coastal Inn that she has owned for years. Riley agrees and she and Lily head out. This is a cheerful break for Riley as she loves Christmas. Riley’s boyfriend, Jack, is a very driven lawyer working long hours trying to become a partner. They have been together for several years but Riley doesn’t feel that theirs is a serious relationship.
Back in Chatham, Riley quickly settles in with new ideas for the Inn, meeting old friends and making new friends. She sees an old boyfriend from years ago, now divorced with a young son. They renew their friendship. Her mother meets a man and for the first time in many years, now has someone good in her life. We meet other characters that are staying at the Inn for several reasons and get a peek into their lives and how their stay in Chatham has brought them happiness and peace.
When Riley gets a chance at some interviews back in Manhattan, one is at Jack’s firm. The pay and benefits are top-notch, but she is not sure that it’s something she wants to do. What will be the outcome of this visit back to her roots?
Pamela Kelley has a way of introducing us to real people and showing us what is happening in people’s lives. Her characters are warm and real. I loved this book. Enjoy!

I was looking forward to reading this book to revisit the area and see how past characters are but there is only a little reference to this. The Christmas Inn was an enjoyable read over all and there were parts of the story that I loved. And then there were parts that were very repetitive and boring. I had many issues with timing not being realistic (there was not a realistic amount of time between activities multiple times through the story) and tedious references to driving back and forth being house and inn. There was also too much reference to clothing brand naming and food and wine names and tastes. It was like they were being used to fill pages instead of moving the story along.
I also wish there had been more build up between Aiden and Riley. There relationship did not feel real in the end and I was not able to connect to them.
I did love that there was women characters over the age of 40. I would have loved if they were just a bit more of the main instead of the secondary characters.
Thanks to netgalley and St Martins Press for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Riley has lost her job and she decides to go home and help her mother at her inn on Cape Cod. Riley discovers that the Inn might be in need of some new marketing. She also soon discovers there might be more than Christmas in the air.
Riley is having a rough way to go with her job and her love life. But there is nothing like returning home to put a new outlook on her life, especially at Christmas time. And when she runs into her old flame, Aidan, the sparks are still there.
This story is a bit slow in places. Of course it is also predictable and it has some mundane details that I could have done without. But the setting of Christmas on Cape Cod is fabulous.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
Pamela M. Kelley never disappoints!
The Christmas Inn by Pamela M. Kelley is just a wonderful cozy and joyful novel of second chances and finding family.
A heartwarming and magical read with a stunning setting along the shores of Cape Cod.
Kelley is a master at writing small town, feel good romances with lots of emotion.
The characters are extremely well developed and I enjoyed reading their story.
In true Pamela M. Kelley style, the book is written perfectly.
Thank You NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
The Christmas Inn is a perfect way to start getting into the holiday spirit. The book has the stories of several of the characters going on at once. I really like this and the fact that the characters are all in different phases in their lives. It illustrates that everyone can find ways to be happy. The characters feel like friends and the overall story was full of hope. The book was a great escape. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a perfect cozy Christmas read! I adored it!
We follow Riley who has just been laid off from her job due to AI taking over. She loved her job and the team she worked with. That night she calls her sister to tell her the news and we find out she has news to tell as well. Their mom, Beth fell off a ladder and broke her leg and she needs help at the Inn she owns in Cape Cod. Riley comes up with a plan to pack some things and head up there to help her mother, especially being so close to Christmas. She took this as a perfect opportunity to reconnect, see family, and help out at the inn.
The story also follows others staying at the inn. Aiden, Riley’s ex-boyfriend who is staying at the inn with his son Luke while their house is under construction. Franny, who just lost her sister. Her sister left her letters to read each week and follow through with each one. These side stories were just as intriguing as the main plot line.
I loved following the story of each character. This book is the perfect small-town Christmas romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
A really nice Christmas story. Set at a cozy inn in Cape Cod.
This is all I've come to expect from Kelley.
The perfect book to curl up with by a fire.
Great characters. I liked how the guests of the Inn played such a large part in the story. They were not just extras like they often are in some books.
If you love a good Christmas story as much as I do, then this is the book for you.
Thanks to netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the arc.
Tropes/Themes: Cozy Christmas, HEA, Slice of life, Christmas miracle/destiny
The Christmas Inn is very much a book that is a period of time during the Christmas season and the magic of the season. It largely follows three women Riley, Beth and Franny as they fall in love and find the meaning of home again.
Overall I enjoyed this one! It was a simple slow burn but the end was a bit of a pay off. It is a good slower read that you can soak up like a warm bath. The character building was well done though I found some of the characters like Jack were a little bit more of a background fixture.
This is a good book for someone who is looking for a slower pace Hallmark movie type of story to enjoy during the holiday season.
The Christmas Inn by Pamela M. Kelley is such a sweet wintertime book. I highly recommend if you're looking for a heartwarming Christmas romance.
Riley loses her job and goes home to help her mother run her inn after she breaks her leg. Of course, Riley runs into an old high school flame. You can guess how it goes from there, but you should still read it.
Here I am reading my first Christmas story. I so love this time of the year. Holiday decor is up and there is a cool breeze in the air.
I really enjoyed this story. I haven't read this author before, and I figured a Christmas story was the best way for an introduction. The Christmas Inn is a feel-good holiday story with likeable characters. Think Hallmark Christmas Movie.
I really liked Rily. I felt for her. losing your job so close to the holidays had to hurt. A time when you want to be happy you are dragged down with thoughts of what happened and why. No one handles being let go from the job without wondering why. Instead of letting it all get her down she heads to Cape Cod and her mother's Inn. There she learnings all isn't doing as well as she hoped.
Along with Rily there is Aiden (high school boyfriend) and his son. I like their story, and it feels right that Riley shares Christmas with people she cares about. Along with Aiden and his son there is Franny who's staying at the Inn. You learn a lot about her and what she's going through.
If you enjoy sweet stories that make you feel good when you finish them then you'll really enjoy The Christmas Inn.
The Christmas Inn by Pamela M. Kelley is a heartwarming novel of family and love.
Riley Sanders could not wait to her small hometown when she finished school. But when she loses her job in Manhattan just before the holidays, she goes back to Cape Cod to help her mom run the family inn. Riley cherishes the time they have together, but she is just itching to return to the big city and her workaholic boyfriend, Jack. But when she finally goes back to Manhattan, does the city she loves and her new job still feel like home?
Riley has never wavered in her decision to live in Manhattan. She is upset when she loses her dream job, but the timing is fortuitous after she learns about her mom’s broken leg. Riley is glad to help out but she continues to look for jobs back in the city. As she hunts for a new job, she welcomes the opportunity to take on some side jobs for her mom and some of the local business owners. Will Riley be ready to return to Manhattan once she finds a new job?
The Christmas Inn is a charming holiday novel. The characters are wonderfully developed with realistic foibles and strengths. The Chantham Coastal Inn and the local town are a magical setting for the light-hearted storyline. Pamela M. Kelley brings this sweet novel to a heartfelt conclusion that will delight readers
The Christmas Inn by Pamela M. Kelley is the perfect quaint and cozy Hallmark movie in reading form. This charming Christmas book has it all, the fiancé back home, the old love back in her hometown and all the while saving the family Inn.
I had a sweet time The Christmas Inn and it hit the spot leading up to Christmas. This is the perfect book to pick up and read before all the Hallmark Christmas movies come out!
The only thing I with there was more of was the relationship rebuild between the two hometown lovers. I felt like there could have been much more for them before the end.
This book was written to be made into a Hallmark movie! It gives the reader a sense of warmth. Riley loses her job right before the holiday and calls her sister Amy to talk to her about it. She learns that her mother has fallen and broken her leg and could really use her help. So Riley leaves her home in NYC to go to Chatham to help out. What she didn’t expect was the find Aiden staying at the Inn; Aiden was her ex from high school. She also didn’t expect to find this longing for family, the desire to be surrounded by friends and family, and a spark that had been missing from her life in NYC.
I enjoyed this book greatly. The scenes were set perfectly that I could vividly imagine them. I don’t know if a real place like Chatham exists in Cape Cod, near it, or anywhere really, but if it does, I would really like to know because I would like to go. The Inn that is mentioned in this book is a Bed and Breakfast. I’ve never been to one but this is what I would imagine them to be like. Everyone was so friendly, everything felt so special, it really was a joy reading this book.
I do wish, however, that there was a little more build up between Aiden and Riley. I just didn’t feel it. You know their high school sweethearts but when they meet again, there’s no instant connection. There’s no spark. There’s no chemistry. And throughout the book, I never felt it. I really wanted to. It just was missing for me.
The sense of family was very strong in this book, not just with Riley and her family, but among the other characters as well; that part was very enjoyable. So it’s a good read, but not a fantastic one.
This is such a heartwarming book! Set on Cape Cod, the story centers on Riley, who returns home after being laid off from her NYC job to help her mom run the Bed and Breakfast. Throughout the book, you also get to enjoy subplots for Riley’s mom and a guest at the Inn, who returned to the Cape for family reasons. As predictable as they were, I did enjoy the love stories of all the women.
Overall, The Christmas Inn offers what you expect from a holiday romance. It made me want to sip on a cup of hot chocolate and plan all the small-town holiday fun. Author Pamela M. Kelley does a great job building the setting for the reader as well. I almost wish I could stop in the book store, sleep at the inn, and get myself some cheese at the infamous wine/cheese shop!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Christmas Inn was a nice way to kick off the start of my 2024 holiday reads.
Following the loss of her job, Riley has returned home to Cape Cod to assist her mother, Beth with their B&B. The timing couldn't have been better for Beth, who had recently broken her leg, another stress to add to her already overwhelmed state. The B&B was struggling to bring in clients, but as luck would have it, Riley just happens to have a successful career in Marketing...or, did, at least.
Riley returns home to find that her former HS sweetheart, Aiden returned to Cape Cod after college, married a local girl and had a son, Luke. Sadly, Aiden's wife passed away three years prior. Due to some necessary home repairs, Aiden and Luke find themselves staying at the B&B through Christmas.
This book is a sweet, clean romance story. The guests at the B&B add a nice touch to the background. All in all, it is everything you would expect from a holiday story, tied up in a big red bow.
Many thanks to St. Martin's Press, NetGalley, and the author for the ARC.
The Christmas Inn by Pamela Kelley is a feel-good Christmas book. The characters were well thought out. The storyline – while predictable – kept me interested. Each of the characters had some adversity in their lives. They have each overcome that adversity and are moving on but are missing something. They find that missing piece in this upbeat Christmas romance.
Who doesn't love a second chance romance? Add in the Christmas theme and this book really has me ready for the holidays! Definitely a feel-good kinda book and I appreciated that after reading several thrillers. This was my first time reading this author and am excited to see what else she has to offer.
A cozy little G-rated weekend read.
Synopsis: Riley lost her job before Christmas and heads home to Cape Cod to help her mother, who broke her leg, at the inn. Beth, Riley’s mother, gets a second chance at love. Aidan, Riley’s high school boyfriend, and his son are staying at the inn for the holidays. B&B lodger Franny lost her sister and was left four unopened letters. A book of second chances and found family — and lots of food and wine.
This is a very straightforward, clean, cute Hallmark-style book. There are no real plot twists nor crazy climaxes, which is totally fine. The characters don’t really have distinct voices or personalities; they all talk the same, almost robotic: “This is wonderful.” “That was a good choice.” “This is delicious.”
As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a heavy emphasis on wine and food throughout the book. Entire paragraphs and pages were dedicated to describing a recipe in great detail — but then would be described in flavor by a character as “good.” Very detailed recipes, very lackluster taste descriptors. “Good” and “nice,” but not “decadent,” “rich” or “savory.”
I don’t think Riley was written to be unlikable, but who brings a tuna sandwich for lunch in an open cubicle?! She was also with her boyfriend for two years, and they didn’t live together, didn’t say “I love you” and didn’t talk for days at a time. (Girl, run!)
Thank you to #NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advanced reader copy of #TheChristmasInn. To be published Sept. 24, 2024.
