*Take Care of Your Friends* is a heartfelt and insightful guide that uses the Enneagram to improve relationships. I knew a little about Enneagrams and I think having this background was useful . Unlike traditional Enneagram books I've read parts of which are focused on self-reflection, this book shifts the focus outwards to better understand and support the people around us. Each Enneagram type is explored in depth, with practical tips and advice tailored to the specific strengths and challenges of each type in relationships. Enneagram concepts can be complex but this book is easy to grasp and enjoyable to read. For those familiar with the Enneagram, it offers fresh perspectives on relationship dynamics.
I recommend this book for anyone looking to connect more meaningfully with loved ones and to navigate relationships with greater awareness and compassion. It's ideal for anyone who has a basic knowledge of enneagrams and want to add to it and get ideas on how to integrate it in your life.
As someone new to the Enneagram concept, this was a fun read that helped me flush out some more understanding of the system. It did a nice job of explaining things in a straightforward manner. I will definitely be recommending this to some of my friends who are big on Enneagram thinking.
4 stars = Great! Might re-read.
I enjoyed this new Enneagram resource focused on interpersonal relationships. I'm not sure the author did enough with the "six pillars of friendship" to make their inclusion work out. But the rest is great - I loved the early descriptions of all of the types.
Includes sections on stress/security (called "health levels" which is different than the way other writers/instructors talk about health levels with the Enneagram), triads, stances, conflict styles. I felt like the author's descriptions were fresh and not rehashed ways of describing things I've read a lot about. Her approach makes this the sort of book I would read start to finish rather than just pull out my type info and then move on.
If someone's really interested in digging into the Enneagram, I would start with other resources, but this would make a nice gift for someone who has done that initial work, knows their type, and wants to apply the Enneagram to their interpersonal relationships.

I liked the focus of this being around how to listen, understand and support your friends based on their enneagram type. It gives me similar vibes of the 5 Love Languages, and how you need to meet their language style to truly help them feel seen, heard and felt.
The downside is that I can’t say I know any of my friend’s enneagram types…or mine, for that matter. I feel like I teeter around 4 different ones. I would hope that buying buying a book like this, I could get guidance on where to take this test without having to sell my information away in exchange.
In concept, this is an insightful psychological approach to stepping outside of our own mindset to try and understand others, and I always appreciate and respect that. I’ll have to see if I can convince all my friends to take an enneagram test and out some of this to the test before I can give this more stars though.
Thanks to NetGalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Christina Wilcox for providing me with a complimentary ARC to review.
This book is about how the Enneagram can help people better understand their own and their friends' behavior in relationship to each other. The premise appealed to me, since so many Enneagram books focus on giving advice for intimate partnerships, without also applying similar principles to platonic friendships. However, even though I found aspects of this book helpful, it's very simplistic overall, and the descriptions of the different types include much more overlap than necessary, without enough distinction.
This book shares some helpful advice for how different Enneagram types tend to engage with their friends, especially when dealing with conflict and tough emotions. There are also bullet-point lists that go through how different types relate to each other, and in what ways they are most inclined to misjudge people with the other types. Some people will find this helpful, and the book will appeal to the author's social media following, but I don't think that this book added anything substantial to the conversation, and the topic is also really niche, since you can only use this book effectively if your friends are also interested in the Enneagram and have typed themselves.
As a fan of enneagrams, I was eagerly anticipating ‘Take Care of Your Friends’ by Christina Wilcox, and I’m happy to say it exceeded my expectations.
Accuracy: ★★★★☆
Enneagrams are inherently subjective, but speaking from my own experience, the descriptions in the book felt very accurate. The insights into my enneagram type resonated with me deeply, reflecting my personality traits and behaviours.
Perspective: ★★★★★
The perspective is fantastic. I love the focus on friendships, which is a refreshing and unique approach in the world of enneagrams. Most enneagram books concentrate on personal growth or romantic relationships, so this focus on friendships is both innovative and valuable.
Relevance: ★★★★☆
This book is incredibly relevant, especially in today’s world where maintaining healthy friendships is so important. The enneagram framework provides a nuanced way to understand and nurture these relationships.
Engagement: ★★★☆☆
The engagement level was quite good. However, I would have appreciated an opportunity within the book for readers to discover their enneagram number. It had been a while since I last checked mine, so I had to look it up online. Including this in the book would have made the reading experience more seamless and engaging.
Readability: ★★★★☆
The readability is quite good. The book is well-organized, making it easy to follow and understand the concepts presented. The language is clear and accessible, which enhances the overall reading experience.
Enjoyment: ★★★★☆
I found the book to be quite enjoyable. It covers a lot of ground, providing valuable insights into how different enneagram types can support and understand each other in the context of friendship. The content is rich and informative, making it a worthwhile read.
‘Take Care of Your Friends’ by Christina Wilcox is a delightful and insightful book that offers a unique perspective on enneagrams by focusing on friendships. While it would benefit from including a tool for readers to discover their enneagram number, the book’s accuracy, relevance, and readability make it a valuable resource for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of their friends through the lens of the enneagram.
Loved this! It inspired me to ask many of my friends to determine their enneagram types so I can better understand how to listen to and love them.
What an enjoyable easy read for both those new to the enneagram and experts in the field. Who doesn’t want to be a better friend?! I loved the illustrations and organization of this book! It makes it really easy to flip through and learn more about each Type and how they show up in relationships. I definitely focused in on the Types I know in my life, but I’m looking forward to going back to this often as my relationships grow and expand. Would absolutely recommend this as a gift for enneagram lovers or young adults getting their footing in the “real world.”
Christina packs a punch with this short read, highly insightful and full of good details, you are sure to find worthwhile tidbits on your own interpersonal relationships. Friends, significant others, siblings, children - you can relate this all to "take care of your friends". While the enneagram is well thought of as insightful to yourself, it's nice to see this used here as a communal and relational aspect! Highly enjoyed this read.
I loved the little bits of illustrations as well. It really made this book feel light and broke up a lot of the informational parts.
Thank you Christina Wilcox and Netgalley for an arc of this book. This was really fun and insightful. I loved the information given and will be coming back to this often.
I love the way this book is set up. The Enneagram can be so confusing to some folks and this book does an awesome job of breaking out down in a digestable way. I would love to add this book to my collection. Big plus that there's not a super religious spin on it as well. I find that many Enneagram books published in the last few years have a hard Christian spin on them, but this one doesn't have that. And the illustrations are cute, too!
This was a great book about how to better understand ourselves and the people around us, to improve our relationship. It provided a lot of insight about how people completely different from each other can maintain and nourish incredible friendships and relationships.
It was well written and explained everything in a way all can understand.
I think some of the ideas maybe oversimplified the complexity of human beings and their personalities, but I still think that it’s a great start to improve interpersonal relationships.
Thank you NetGalley for the e-arc!
"Take Care of Your Friends" by Christina Wilcox is a heartfelt exploration of the dynamics and responsibilities inherent in friendships. As someone who appreciates nurturing relationships, I found this book deeply resonant.
Wilcox's writing is both insightful and practical. She delves into the nuances of friendship, emphasizing the significance of empathy, communication, and mutual support. I particularly identify as the second enneagram, the giver, and I felt seen many times and could see a lot of resemblance in the relationships I have. The author effectively highlights the challenges that givers may encounter, such as the risk of burnout or feeling unappreciated.
Moreover, Wilcox doesn't just offer theoretical advice; she provides actionable strategies and reflective exercises throughout the book. This hands-on approach makes "Take Care of Your Friends" an enlightening read and a practical toolkit for nurturing and sustaining meaningful friendships.
It's a perfect book to have on your side table!
With her first book “ Take Care of Type” Christina delved into the enneagram and how each person could use the personality framework to better understand themselves. In her new book “ Take Care of Your Friends” she turns that insight outward, helping each type learn to relate, recognize each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and become better friends. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and thought it gave great insight into how different types of people could relate to each other. Thank you to netgalley for a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading this book about enneagram types and how that relates to friendships. I really liked how each type was explained and how they each got a more in depth section in the book. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
I really enjoyed this book - I loved the informative and straightforward style, and my friends and I are very into the Enneagram so this is right up our alley! I can't wait to share this with them when it is published!
