Beautiful photography and a variety of journeys to make on foot, by road, by bike, by rail, and by water. This is a great book to generate travel ideas. The information is not comprehensive, but it's enough to get you started.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #DK for a free copy of #UnforgettableJourneysTheAmericas by DK Eyewitness. All opinions are my own.
Unforgettable Journeys: The Americas is a beautiful book. The journeys covered in this book were separated into methods of transportation: by foot, by car, by train, and even by boat. There was a great variety of time commitments with the journeys - from a few hours to weeks. The photographs are stunning! I loved the variety of locations the book covered as well. This will make a beautiful coffee table book in print!
Stunning photographs and a wealth of information on so many different locations. I don't get to travel much, but I absolutely love books like this that allow me to see so many different places without having to leave my home.
This is really a nicely produced book! I enjoyed the selection of journeys, mix of graphics/fonts/details, and--especially and happily--the photographs! (On that note, the book would best be read, then, on a tablet or as a physical copy--i.e. not via "regular"/e-ink ereader.)
There's just enough info in each entry to whet the reader's appetite; the entries are by no means exhaustive, but certainly provide the critical info for you to find out more elsewhere as desired. The description lengths vary; some are longer than others, and I'm always curious as to the whys and wherefores on that--the editors' whim? But of course, being nonexhaustive, it can't please everyone. ;) What interests me is by no means going to interest everyone else in exactly the same way. So, kudos to the editors for producing a great starting point for readers, whether armchair or IRL traveler.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The digital copy of this book only left me wanting more! Or maybe I should say the whole thing, as pictures and some information was cut off. I am definitely watching for this book after publication. I was surprised by the about of information that was given about each place as I have found that a lot of picture travel books leave quite a bit of information out. I have been to a few of the places in this book, and the pictures it contains of where I have been made me feel as if I was there again. It made me want to get back on the road again! The way this book was structured is user friendly. Would you like to bike, go by train, drive? Pick your mode of transport and then dive into this book! I thank NetGalley and DK for the advance travel ticket!
This is a gorgeous book full of so many amazing adventures and photos to go along with them. The book is separated in different categories including on foot, by road, by bike, by rail, and by water.
The first section of the book definitely made me want to lace up my hiking shoes and get outside. So many amazing hikes to do. The second section had me longing to take a roadtrip! I especially liked the lighthouse drive. I did something similar years ago and it was incredible. The third section is by bike. I’m not a bike rider, but if you were, I think you’d really enjoy this section! I’m hoping to take my son on a train trip one day! I loved this section. It made me nostalgic for past train trips I’ve taken in Europe.
Overall, a fantastic book that I highly recommend checking out to find your next adventure!
"Unforgettable Journeys: The Americas" is a book featuring scenic journeys organized into these categories: On Foot, By Road, By Bike, By Rail and By Water. I would absolutely recommend the "hard" copy of this book as opposed to the digital copy because it features beautiful photography and would make a wonderful coffee table book. This book features the Americas' most inspirational journeys from South America to Canada to the Caribbean.
The "On Foot" chapter features a combination of well-known and lesser-known trails/walks. Featured trails include the Appalachian Trail, Cliff Walk and Angel's Landing. Information is provided for each trail such as distance, time, and difficulty. The "By Road" chapter features many interesting road trips such as the On the Road--New York City to San Francisco journey. This 2-3 weeklong trip follows in the route of novelist Jack Kerouac. If that's too much of an undertaking, try the 2-3 day long North Maine Woods or the weeklong journey called The Crooked Road which is a musical-heritage trail. Bicyclists will be in interested in the section on bike trails. Trails featured include "Underground Railroad" and the "Prairie Spirit Trail." If you enjoy leisurely and scenic train rides, check out the "By Rail" section featuring both short and long train rides such as the Grand Canyon Railway and the well-known Mount Washington Cog Railway. Finally, the By Water section of this book features steamboat rides on the Mississippi to sailing on Lake Michigan.
This is definitely a book I'd love to add to my collection as it features so many wonderful ideas for planning all sorts of adventures! Thank you to the publisher for the digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’m not the first person to volunteer for a multiday hike, but there are a few in this book I may want to do now. The fantastic part of the book is that it isn’t just journeys by foot but chapters on foot, by road (I love a good road trip!), by bike, by rail (cool!), and by water. The images are beautiful..I wish they were larger.
Thank you, NetGalley and DK Eyewitness Travel, for allowing me to daydream about the places I want to explore.
I think it says everything you need to know about this book that I have been interrupting my reading to try to convince people to make some of the trips with me. The book is divided into sections by type of travel: hiking, driving, cycling, train, and water. Then you get a list of specific trips, with information about how long each is, how long it takes, and how to get there and take the trip. The pictures are stunning, just beautiful glossy pictures showing the glory of nature. I can't believe I didn't know about some of these adventures, especially when I've visited a few of these areas on my own. I definitely have a lot more ideas about places I need to go now. Thanks so much to NetGalley for letting me read this fantastic travel guide.
Thank you to the NetGalley for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is almost certainly a book better read with a hard copy rather than digital. I read this on my desktop using Adobe Digital Editions and the layout was a bit haphazard with maps cut off and text boxes scattered randomly. The photos were beautiful though and I can imagine would be stunning on coffee table book with thick, glossy paper. I particularly like how the itineraries are presented -- by mode of travel (on foot, by road, by bike, by rail, by water) but not sure I would characterize all trips as "unforgettable journeys".
If you don't have a large format travel book yet, this one and the rest in the series (UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEYS and UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEYS: EUROPE) are not a bad place to start your collection (and fuel your wanderlust), but I have a lot of books similar to them already and this series are more library borrows than keepers to me.
Unforgettable Journeys The Americas serves as a great resource for finding your next adventure. Whether you're looking for a road trip, a hike, a bike ride, travel by water, or a trip by train, there is sure to be a journey that catches your interest. With trips lasting from a 20 minute hike to a months long excursion, and landmarks from Alaska to Antarctica, if you want to explore North or South America, this is a great way to find what you are looking for.
The photographs are stunning, and while the information is brief (there is a lot of ground to cover, pun intended), it is enough to get you started, and provides website links for gathering additional information.
If you aren't one to leave the comfort of your own home, this can still be a book of interest to capture small glimpses of the world around you, and perhaps it will inspire you to leave the couch and hit the road.
Thank you to NetGalley and DK | DK Eyewitness Travel for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
So many incredible places made this book/list, and honestly, there are tons more that easily could be in here too.
This is the perfect book for any travel loving, hiking, biking, water way transporting person. Basically, if you love to see the world, and want to know more places to go to, this is for you.
Needless to say a lot of new to me places were added on my travel bucket list. So many unique, incredible places on this planet.
Thank you NetGalley for my E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and to DK Eyewitness Travel for the ARC of Unforgettable Journeys The Americas.
I have traveled to 54 countries, and have lived in 5 states in the USA, but traveled to many more. Much of that travel has been designed around nature and just spending time outdoors and enjoying so many different amazing places from the state I live in to places 47 hour plane rides away. I was just thinking it would be great to update my travel bucket list and this book fell into my lap.
I appreciated that this book is divided into five sections: hiking, cycling, driving ,trains and boats, and then it lists a range of places from Canada to Antarctica. This helps make the book more accessible to all kinds of travelers, while still staying true to taking time in each individual place, with most places needing at least a robust day to be completed.
Some spaces I consider absolute classics are listed in South America: Aconcagua, the O Circuit, all of Patagonia, La Ciudad Perdida, Colca Canyon, Death Road, the Galapagos, the Pantanal, headed from Manaus to Iquitos, Tierra del Fuego and more. Having spent significant time in South America, I feel like this book is a great list for adventure seekers to pursue or to begin their travels from.
There is also a lot listed for the United States (Rockies to the Red Rocks, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are two I have done recently), as well as Canada, Mexico, central America and the Caribbean. I was able to add a lot to my bucket list, and appreciated being able to see the length of proposed routes/trails and the overall time commitment, as well as some absolutely beautiful photos (the Morne Trois Pitons National Park looks amazing!).
Honestly, there is a lifetime's worth of things to see in the Americas, and I would urge travelers not to overlook this book and not to choose other continents over exploring the massive amount of land and culture from the top of Canada to Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. We have so many stunning places to see and explore, and this book is a great jumping off point to finding a new place to visit and a mode to travel around in that best suits your travel style.
