"Unforgettable Journeys: The Americas" is a book featuring scenic journeys organized into these categories: On Foot, By Road, By Bike, By Rail and By Water. I would absolutely recommend the "hard" copy of this book as opposed to the digital copy because it features beautiful photography and would make a wonderful coffee table book. This book features the Americas' most inspirational journeys from South America to Canada to the Caribbean.
The "On Foot" chapter features a combination of well-known and lesser-known trails/walks. Featured trails include the Appalachian Trail, Cliff Walk and Angel's Landing. Information is provided for each trail such as distance, time, and difficulty. The "By Road" chapter features many interesting road trips such as the On the Road--New York City to San Francisco journey. This 2-3 weeklong trip follows in the route of novelist Jack Kerouac. If that's too much of an undertaking, try the 2-3 day long North Maine Woods or the weeklong journey called The Crooked Road which is a musical-heritage trail. Bicyclists will be in interested in the section on bike trails. Trails featured include "Underground Railroad" and the "Prairie Spirit Trail." If you enjoy leisurely and scenic train rides, check out the "By Rail" section featuring both short and long train rides such as the Grand Canyon Railway and the well-known Mount Washington Cog Railway. Finally, the By Water section of this book features steamboat rides on the Mississippi to sailing on Lake Michigan.
This is definitely a book I'd love to add to my collection as it features so many wonderful ideas for planning all sorts of adventures! Thank you to the publisher for the digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’m not the first person to volunteer for a multiday hike, but there are a few in this book I may want to do now. The fantastic part of the book is that it isn’t just journeys by foot but chapters on foot, by road (I love a good road trip!), by bike, by rail (cool!), and by water. The images are beautiful..I wish they were larger.
Thank you, NetGalley and DK Eyewitness Travel, for allowing me to daydream about the places I want to explore.
I think it says everything you need to know about this book that I have been interrupting my reading to try to convince people to make some of the trips with me. The book is divided into sections by type of travel: hiking, driving, cycling, train, and water. Then you get a list of specific trips, with information about how long each is, how long it takes, and how to get there and take the trip. The pictures are stunning, just beautiful glossy pictures showing the glory of nature. I can't believe I didn't know about some of these adventures, especially when I've visited a few of these areas on my own. I definitely have a lot more ideas about places I need to go now. Thanks so much to NetGalley for letting me read this fantastic travel guide.
Thank you to NetGalley and to DK Eyewitness Travel for the ARC of Unforgettable Journeys The Americas.
I have traveled to 54 countries, and have lived in 5 states in the USA, but traveled to many more. Much of that travel has been designed around nature and just spending time outdoors and enjoying so many different amazing places from the state I live in to places 47 hour plane rides away. I was just thinking it would be great to update my travel bucket list and this book fell into my lap.
I appreciated that this book is divided into five sections: hiking, cycling, driving ,trains and boats, and then it lists a range of places from Canada to Antarctica. This helps make the book more accessible to all kinds of travelers, while still staying true to taking time in each individual place, with most places needing at least a robust day to be completed.
Some spaces I consider absolute classics are listed in South America: Aconcagua, the O Circuit, all of Patagonia, La Ciudad Perdida, Colca Canyon, Death Road, the Galapagos, the Pantanal, headed from Manaus to Iquitos, Tierra del Fuego and more. Having spent significant time in South America, I feel like this book is a great list for adventure seekers to pursue or to begin their travels from.
There is also a lot listed for the United States (Rockies to the Red Rocks, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are two I have done recently), as well as Canada, Mexico, central America and the Caribbean. I was able to add a lot to my bucket list, and appreciated being able to see the length of proposed routes/trails and the overall time commitment, as well as some absolutely beautiful photos (the Morne Trois Pitons National Park looks amazing!).
Honestly, there is a lifetime's worth of things to see in the Americas, and I would urge travelers not to overlook this book and not to choose other continents over exploring the massive amount of land and culture from the top of Canada to Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. We have so many stunning places to see and explore, and this book is a great jumping off point to finding a new place to visit and a mode to travel around in that best suits your travel style.
