a quick read that i felt could've been written better.

this book follows a teenager, evelyn lassiter, who is voted as the sherriff of her town. unfortunately for her, a murder happens right after she's elected, and she has to work with the deputy, leo paige, to figure out this murder that leads to a conspiracy.

this book was quite easy to read and i thought it was defintely an enticing premise, but i thought that the writing overall seemed pretty mediocre; it was not very strong to me. there were some errors and i think it could've been looked over more. it was a pretty flat story to me, but the plot was interesting for sure.

i found evelyn an okay mc, but i was more invested in leo paige; his character was much more compelling to me. also it's crazy to me that evelyn took on a full-time job while in her senior year please do your college apps queen.

i give this book 2.5 stars, 3 rounded up. i think it was interesting but ultimately for me the execution fell flat.

Whats the book about? A young girl secretely runs for sheriff in her small town & wins. Naturally her crime free small town has some secrets that all come out whiles she’s sheriff. Now Evelyn must balance, school, homework, being Sheriff & solve a murder or two.
I wanted to like this book. But I didn’t
This book was advertised as LGBTQ+. It is not. The main character says something like “Jennifer Lawrence is hot” & that her parents know. That was it! I thought there was going to be something with her best friend Deliah, but NOPE.
The idea that a young teen girl secretly runs for Sheriff & wins was true perfection. In the beginning at times, it felt like the Veronica Mars the TV Show. Then it fell flat.
Yet, when her parents ask her, she gives a bunch of reasons; “I don’t want to go to college yet, you guys were bugging me, I don’t like our current sheriff.”
It was like she did this on a whim & once she gets it, she’s not interested. She carries a bb gun & still goes to school during the day (even though she got her GED). Her parents are supportive but tell her they expect her to do her chores.
I also want to know why did we have to know EVERYTHING that Evelyn ate? If you’re hungry, don’t read this book, as Evelyn eats a lot & it’s told in detail.
There were a lot of simple editing errors, & words used incorrectly.
One thing I did like was the mystery. It was enjoyable & the reason I kept reading.
Thank you to Net Galley and Victory Editing for an ARC of this novel.

This was just pure fun. It's a little silly, but it's also got heart and a little bit of darkness thrown in. I flew through it, and I think it's definitely worth the read!

It’s almost the end of senior year, and Evelyn Lassiter is sick of everyone’s expectations that she figure out what she’s going to do with her life. In an effort to get everyone off her back, Evelyn organizes a bit of a prank to overthrow the local sheriff: she gets herself elected as a write-in candidate.

In her first act as sheriff, Evelyn gleefully replaces the former sheriff’s “Blue Lives Matter” flag with a “Black Lives Matter” flag, enjoying the media spectacle. But it’s not long before she realizes the sheriff’s job is a lot more work and responsibility than she had anticipated. Sure, her goal is to get recalled and help Deputy Leo Paige get elected in her place, but in the meantime? She’s in over her head, and she’s made enemies of her employees in the sheriff’s office.

Things get even worse when she and Deputy Paige uncover evidence that someone in the sheriff’s department is involved with the presence of the designer drug Blue 82 that is circulating the community and leading to multiple deaths by overdose. It’s up to them to get to the bottom of things before Evelyn is recalled and the former sheriff regains control of the office.

While the novel starts off a bit glib (including some profanity in the early chapters), it becomes immediately clear that Evelyn wants to do right by her community and see her responsibility through, and it’s hard not to root for her, especially as her family and friends come alongside her. Evelyn is a great role model, and this fun crime novel is reminiscent of Veronica Mars. We think your mystery lovers will enjoy it.

What a delightful tale of hometown struggles and justice prevailing. Not to mention, a satisfying mystery with an all true real world equivalent. definitely recommend for that inquisitive teen in your life.

This book was quick and easy to read but I found it difficult to connect with our main character and found the premise to be incredibly far fetched for a contemporary thriller. The mystery itself felt a bit long and convoluted, although it did have potential to be something great. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to escape for a bit but personally it wasn't for me.

When a High School senior decides to get back at the adults who are pushing her to achieve things, and orchestrates a prank campaign to get elected as the Sheriff of her county in Tennessee, she has no idea what she is letting herself in for.

Almost immediately after Evelyn is elected, a murder in the area kicks off a major investigation that she is - surprise, surprise - not prepared for. It is asking a lot for a teenager to be part of investigating any deaths, even if she IS the new Sheriff!

This is original, funny and whip-smart story telling, that is well worth a read. I breezed through it.
