📚 2024 #50: “Dim Sum Strategy” by Peter Wilken

📕 This book is a guide to building your company's brand and is meant for anyone from a solopreneur to a C-level at a large corporation. Wilken's breaks down a bunch of small tools that can be worked through sequentially or taken in small bites, much like going out for a dim sum meal.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5: I like the concept of a "dim sum strategy" that can be taken in whole or part, whichever you need at the moment. The sequential progression of the book was well laid out and there was plenty of practical advice for teams looking to brand -- or rebrand -- their companies. This isn't quite as applicable for most solopreneurs and is more corporate, but still has useful information.

🤓 You should read this if you're on a marketing team for a company. If you liked "Born to Create" by Anne Jacoby, you'll probably like this too!

🥰 Thank you to NetGalley and Post Hypnotic Press for the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

A quick and accessible step-by-step guide for beginners. The short chapters provide both insight and tips on how to build a brand in a way that works for you. And like with most such books it is the stories and history that make it truly an enjoyable read. While the purpose of this book is to help you build your commercial brand, there's also some advice in it, helpful for everyone who's trying to crystalize their own personal brand in a world where your online presence speaks more about you than your resume.

If you're listening to this as you're out and about, be it on your commute or when working out, it might be a little hard to keep up with the different tools, because that relies heavily on the free PDF the author provides, so if you can't have it available you might need to come back to that part. It's not necessarily a negative thing but it is something to consider.

The author's voice is very well suited to reading the audiobook. One one hand, it's clear he understands the topic and is passionate about it, but it's also very pleasant to listen to. For the most part, listening to this audiobook feels more like having a chat and less like he's trying to teach you something.

This book was such a pleasant surprise! The first part is packed with surprisingly insightful content that really resonated with me. As I progressed through the second half, I found it less relevant to my personal situation, but it still offered valuable information.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in practical insights and effective frameworks. It's a worthwhile read, especially for those seeking to gain new perspectives and useful strategies.

Great book- felt like I was sitting in an MBA class (even though I don't like the concept of personal brands. Why can't we just be people?- but that's not this book's fault of course!)

For someone that doesn’t know much about brands, this was an interesting read.

The book feels like a story in the way it flows seamlessly while delivering valuable tips and tricks.

Definitely recommend!

Dim Sum Strategy provides so many tools regarding brand, brand identity and brand strategy. The narration was clear and consice. There were so many tools and at time, it was a bit overwhelming. The brand history was very interesting. This book could also help a person looking for ways to increase their personal brand. The discussion of the tools was sometimes a bit hard to follow on the audiobook but the accompanying PDF may help with that. The emotional section (part 4) was especially impactful and discussed the part of emotions in brand identity. For anyone looking for a smorgasbord of brand tools, this book is it!
