A sweet picture books and the kids and Grandmothers alike! Whatever you called your Grandma, Mimi, Gigi, Bunny, Memaw, I’d recommend this to any grandmothers whoever ever they love!
To Mimi’s House We Go by Susan Meissner
This was an awesome Christmas book! It makes a great read-a-loud! A sweet story that would be a perfect gift for any small child with grandparents. The rhyme is catching and the illustrations are wonderful! 5/5⭐️
I enjoyed this cute rhyming/poem story about visiting different types of grandma’s houses. I liked how each Mimi lived in a different style of house and celebrated different Christmas traditions. I also liked the addition of different winter climates and various modes of transportation used to reach Mimi's house. My favorite part of the book was the colorful illustrations on every page! I plan on buying a copy for myself to share with my grandkids!
Thank you NetGalley and Tommy Nelson Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
A cute book about travel. Great for read aloud to kids of all different backgrounds. THe pictures are fun too.
This book reminds me of the poem, turned song: "Over the river and through the woods, To grandmother's house we go". Each spread of pages shows a family of various cultures and living in various places, heading to and spending time at their Grandmother's for Christmas. All types of transportation such as a ferry, a cable car, airplane, pickup, train and more take the family to their Mimi's house. At the houses we see couples, uncles and single grandma's living there. The reader gets to enjoy all different kinds of celebrations based on the family. The end of the book shares various names for grandma's such as Mimi, Nana, Yaya, Oma, Granny and more. My grandkids immediately commented that they call their other grandma Nona. Then the book ends with time for bed. The illustrations are wonderful. They are full of celebration, multi-cultural activities and food, as well as family. We made a list of all the different ways they get to their Mimi's house and there are 13 different ways. Can you guess what they all are? A good book showing how everyone celebrates in their own way, and they all enjoy family time.
Beautifully and sweetly illustrated book about how grandchildren can visit their grannies with different modes of transportation. The text is written in rhyme which children will enjoy and will probably be able to recite by heart in no time at all. A wonderful story to remind us that Christmas is about family and getting together with loved ones. Grandmothers will love reading this with their little grandchildren.
Though it is a book about Christmas, it is a purely secular book with no mention at all about the birth of Christ.
I was excited to read this latest book of Susan Meissner since I enjoy her historical fiction books. This is a story of different ways families travel to see their Grandmother's around Christmas time. So many different places, types of houses, traditions, and names Grandmother's have. This would be a great book for your readers' Mimi or Nana or Gigi or Oma to have to read with the kids around the holidays. My kids enjoyed seeing all the different types of weather and houses families celebrate in. The illustrations give that cozy holiday vibe.
I was able to read this book on my kindle through NetGalley and give feedback on this story.
A good feel book about going to your grandma’s because there is no place like your grandma’s. I wanted to read this because I love Susan’s work, and wasn’t expecting such a pretty book. The text is short and sweet, full of things we can do on the way to and with grandma. The illustrations are gorgeous.
Put this in your kid’s Christmas stockings.
“To Mimi’s House We Go” is a lovely rhyming book sharing all different ways a family might travel to visit their grandmother for Christmas. The pictures were fun and engaging, and we enjoyed finding the dog in each family setting. This is a sweet little storybook about families at the holidays. It would be fun book for a grandparent to read to a grandchild.
I requested a copy of this book for review. The thoughts expressed here are wholly my own.
I enjoyed reading To Mimi's House We Go by Susan Meissner. You will fall in love with all the beautiful illustrations and characters. I received an ARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given freely. Happy Reading!
When I was a kid, we drove to the Iowa farm homes of both sets of grandparents in a Galaxy 500. Yes, that was a LONG time ago -- the 1970's.
Nowadays my grands have to take a plane from the EU to MCI in Kansas City to see their Grammy and Papa for Christmas. They will need to pack winter clothes similar to what they are wearing back home.
In this new picture book from Susan Meissner and Mette Engell, many different families show the ways they travel to see their Mimi or Oma or Granny or Grammy or your favorite grandmother name. (One of my daughter-in-laws has a grandma she calls "Gogo.") The rhyming narrative and illustrations show a wide range of locations and activities to enjoy together.
If you are travelling to celebrate with family this year, consider reading this new picture book along the way.
Thank you to Tommy Nelson and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
A lovely little illustrated story about what happens when we go to mimi's house. There are pretty pictures along with the story.
Cute children’s book about Christmas with grandmas. I loved seeing the different homes and locations of visiting grandmas, the illustrations were adorable. A great holiday read with grandkids
Thank you, NetGalley and Tommy Nelson, for this ARC of To Mimi's House We Go, written by Susan Meissner and illustrated by Mette Engell!
This is a sweet story about different grandchildren visiting their own Mimi's house. The book's sentences are rhymes, and I always enjoy reading these types of books to my students. I love it when they can hear/see and make that connection and then brainstorm other rhyming words. I also enjoyed the representation of all family types, races, and geographical locations. The illustrations enhance this beautiful concept and add meaningful connections. This book is great for classrooms because students can see all the different ways people celebrate the winter holidays at their homes. While also understanding we call our Grandma all different names, and sometimes a Grandpa is there and sometimes not. I would recommend this book for classroom reads during the Winter season!

I loved the illustrations in the book, they are really great and lovely to look at.
I thought that the story was good and it was one my 6 year old daughter really enjoyed too and we loved seeing the different ways that families get ready for Christmas and spending the time with the grandma's/nanny's, etc. She loves being able to read books herself and she was able to do that with this book, so that’s a plus for me and something I definitely encourage. She liked the repetitive nature and that the same sentence was used at the end of the different parts.
We read the book together and then she read it to me the next night and has asked for it again tonight – you can’t really give greater praise to a children’s book than that with the number of books that there are available.
It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended!
To MiMi’s House We go is written for children by Susan Meissner, an author whose books I enjoy very much. I usually do not read children’s books. Since my mother was affectionately called Mimi, by her grandchildren, I was intrigued and I requested an advanced reader’s copy.
The book is delightful! This is a Christmas tale, written in rhyme, with colorful illustrations every child should enjoy.
3.5 stars To Mimi’s House We Go is a sweet book with adorable pictures. I love the rhyming, lyrical flow of the story. As a Pre-K teacher, rhyming books are great for capturing the children’s attention and they love to fill in words as I read based on what makes sense as a rhyming word ending a page. This is the kind of book that allows for that. I am happy to see inclusion in the photos, with the representation of other nationalities and customs. This would be great to help teach my students the importance of other cultures and that we don’t all celebrate in the same way. We all have special ways to spend time with our families and can appreciate our differences. It’s what makes us special and this story helps demonstrate that. It’s also nice to allow children to see that even things such as climate might be different- not everyone has a wintry, snowy Christmas as we do, and as many Christmas holidays themed books often depict! Susan Meissner is one of my favorite historical fiction authors and I was happy to read this children’s book by her (I believe this is her second one and I look forward to checking out her other one as well as purchasing a copy of this one for my students!
Thank you to Netgalley and Tommy Nelson publishing for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Since I am a grandmother, I love reading good books to my grandchildren. This is an exceptional picture book showing all the different grannies, destinations, and holiday traditions. I'm in love with the story and the pictures.
Thank you, Netgalley for a review copy of this book.
Book Review: To Mimi's House We Go Kindle Edition by Susan Meissner (Author) & Mette Engell (Illustrator)
Rating: 4 Stars
As the holiday season approaches, I found myself captivated by To Mimi's House We Go, a delightful children's book by Susan Meissner, featuring enchanting illustrations by Mette Engell. This charming story takes readers on a whimsical adventure inspired by the classic holiday tune "Over the River and Through the Woods." It beautifully explores how modern families embark on their journeys to visit their beloved grandmothers—be they Mimis, Omas, Gigis, or Nanas.
The poem captures the spirit of Christmas by portraying various families as they travel across different landscapes, from bustling cities to serene countrysides, all in anticipation of joyful holiday celebrations. Each page is filled with the warmth of family love, delicious food, and shared memories, creating a tapestry that showcases the rich diversity of traditions during this special season. The rhyming text flows effortlessly, reminiscent of traditional carols, making it a delightful read-aloud experience for little ones.
What really struck me about this book is its celebration of grandmothers and the unique ways families come together, regardless of their backgrounds or settings. The illustrations are absolutely stunning—vibrant and full of life—which only adds to the excitement for the upcoming holiday. They transport you right into the heart of Christmas, sparking joy and anticipation.
I believe this book would be perfect for introducing a young child to the idea of their first holiday family trip, whether it’s a quick drive down the road or a longer journey across states. It encapsulates the essence of family bonding during Christmas and serves as a gentle reminder that no matter how we travel or what traditions we uphold, the love we share remains a constant thread.
In conclusion, To Mimi's House We Go is a beautifully crafted story that both informs and entertains. It’s a sweet testament to family, love, and the magic of Christmas that will surely resonate with children aged 4 to 8—and even the grandmothers who will share it with them! I highly recommend adding this lovely book to your holiday reading list.

We really enjoyed this sweet story! The illustrations are beautiful, and I loved the way the author showed readers how different going to "Mimi's" house might look. There was so much diversity in families but also in the traditions that each family held at Mimi's each year. Very cute!
