A sad tail of how quickly things can unravel in life… from having a job, a relationship, family to,having nothing and not being seen and aided by others. It felt very sad, and inevitable. Also about making poor choices in life. Liked how relationships developed and secrets were revealed.

This is a quick read and kept me hooked the whole time, the flow of the story and characters development was perfect. I felt a connection to the character Britany where one bad thing in your life can send you down a path you never thought you be. I almost felt like she walked in someone else shoe on another life.

Britany's life starts to spiral after an accident that leave one person dead, within a week she loses her home, job and what is left of her dignity. Cliff the investigating officer on the car accident never thought he would be the last person to speak to Britany before she goes missing. While assisting in the search of Britany he starts to look into his own mother who disappeared when he was a child. In order to find Britany, he has to look into the faces of those that most people refuse to see. In the meantime, Britany is in full survival mode can she stay alive to be found?

This book kept me hooked from the beginning. A great story about how a few bad choices can lead down a rough road, but you can find your way back to your path. Also explores that some people chose to live life they way they want to even if it looks different than ours. I had so many thoughts about how I thought the plot would go. I came to care for the characters quickly and deeply. I do wish the book explored more of Grant or Cliff’s involvement in that case. However, I am super happy with the way things ended for Brittany and Cliff getting the closure he needed. Hoping to enjoy more by this author!

You could be just one bad event, decision or mistake away from a completely different life. That is the moral of this book which tells the story of 26 year old Brit Adams and Officer Cliff Rathborn. A tragic chain of events results in Brit becoming homeless. Officer Rathborn is the last person to see Brit alive before she is reported as missing.

I felt a connection to both Brit and Cliff. The author does a good job of making both characters three dimensional and likeable. I wanted to know what would happen to both. The author also reminded me how easy it is not to see those who have ended up homeless and that we shouldn't judge as we don't know how they ended up there. It was also a good reminder of the vicious cycle that those who are homeless become involved in - no address makes it difficult to get a job or a bank account but you need a job to pay rent and so the cycle continues.

Towards the end of the story, the author tried to make a further point about the perils of homelessness and young women. This part felt rushed and under developed compared to the rest of the story. I think this could have been developed in a much better way and also in a less obvious way, as I could tell where this storyline was heading.

Despite this, I still enjoyed the book and would read more by this author.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

In the hauntingly evocative novel “Those We Do Not See,” Angie Gallion delves into the depths of human fragility and resilience. The protagonist, Britany Adams, is a character etched with realism and complexity, whose life takes a harrowing turn following a tragic accident. Gallion’s narrative is a poignant exploration of the downward spiral that ensues, painting a vivid picture of loss, guilt, and survival.

Britany’s journey is a stark reminder of how quickly life can unravel, leaving one to navigate the treacherous waters of despair. Yet, it is also a testament to the indomitable human spirit that clings to hope even in the darkest corners. Gallion’s prose is both gritty and tender, forcing readers to confront the uncomfortable reality of those society often overlooks.

Officer Cliff Rathborn’s subplot intertwines with Britany’s story, adding layers of mystery and a quest for closure. His personal struggle with unresolved trauma from his mother’s disappearance mirrors the central theme of searching for the unseen and unacknowledged.

Gallion’s skillful storytelling compels the reader to look beyond the surface, to acknowledge the existence and struggles of “Those We Do Not See.” It’s a narrative that resonates deeply, urging a reflective gaze upon our own perceptions of those around us.

This novel is an experience that lingers, challenging one’s worldview. Gallion has crafted a work that is both a mirror and a window—reflecting our own biases and offering a glimpse into the lives of others. A must-read for those who appreciate literature that moves and transforms.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Engaging and thought-provoking, “Those We Do Not See” is a compelling addition to contemporary fiction, and Angie Gallion solidifies her place as a storyteller of profound depth and empathy. This book is highly recommended for readers who seek narratives that are both emotionally charged and socially conscious.

Those We Do Not See - Angie Gallion

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to Net Galley, Red Adept Publishing for this ARC in return for an honest review.

Those we do not see follows 26 year old Britany Adams who finds herself in a difficult situation after a tragic chain of events, as well as Officer Cliff Rathborn who struggles with his own demons and is the last person to see Britany when she is reported missing.

This story shows the personal growth that both Brit and Cliff go through with their traumas and tragedy.
I couldn’t believe the the way that Brit journey had from having everything to having nothing and starting from scratch again. I had times that I did have sympathy for her with the events that kept happening. It’s a reminder that one decision or one chain of events can change the course if your life forever. I was able to read this book in one sitting as I just wanted to keep reading for a nice way for Brits life to change.

I will say however that the ending did feel slightly rushed just to get all the points that haven’t been covered to be said but it did seem like a nice little conclusive ending for Brit.

A powerful story about how one mistake can change your entire life and how important it is to just be seen. One mistake Britney made caused a spiral of events in her life and taking her down such a hard road. This story really dives into mental health, homelessness, drugs, and more.

What a gut-wrenching and humbling read. Those We Do Not See follows 26 year-old Britany Adams who finds herself homeless after a tragic chain of events; and Officer Cliff Rathborn who struggles with his own internal demons and is the last person to see Brit alive before her mother reports her as missing.

The author effectively weaves multiple stories into a staggering narrative that reminds us all that we may be one event or bad decision away from a new unfortunate life.

The power of this story snuck up on me. At first I couldn’t believe Brit’s bad luck. I felt myself getting upset as the events unfolded. The slippery slope Brit slides down is reminiscent of so many circumstances in life. It’s a reminder that one decision, one chain of events can derail the trajectory of one’s life. The cast of characters played a significant role in the development and connection to each facet of the story.

I could not put this book down. I felt a deep connection to the characters and their circumstances. This story evoked thoughts about my own reactions to people down on their luck and/or with addiction and mental health problems. It’s easy to walk by and not see them but they each have a story and some may be looking for a way out. The circuitous journey to a job or housing after falling down this slippery slope is cumbersome at best and depicted vividly.

One event at the final portion of the story felt jammed in. While I understand the author’s intent in adding another reality of the vulnerabilities of unhoused young women, and did overall like the ending, this particular development felt rushed.

Definitely pick this well written book up to be reminded of those we do not see and the humanitarianism we all hope to find. *Release date: 6/11/24*

It all starts with a car accident. Brittany Addams is driving with her ex-boyfriend. The ex she did not forget from school that she lost touch with as he moved on to college and she didn’t.
After this accident, Brit ends up in a downward spiral that starts with her boyfriend, Zack, throwing her out while she tries to work through the car accident, thinking she killed someone.

As we follow Brit through her challenges, we are reminded that we are not that many choices, or in this case unfortunate events, away from being homeless and in a hopeless situation.
The author has a realistic view of how it is to be without an address and the details I imagine are very close to the trough of navigating the world without a home to stay in.

Brits struggle with the thoughts of killing someone are heartbreaking and the struggle to work through them is a struggling I think most have had to work with at one point or another with one subject or another.
I think this will pull on many readers heartstrings.

Quote: "You can't be here."

Those We Do Not See by Angie Gallion starts out on July 8th, with a terrible car accident. An accident Britany Adams caused. Jason, who is married to someone else is in the car with her. Brit has an abusive boyfriend by the name of Zack. Brit and Jason used to date in high school and their long-distance paths lead them away from each other. When Brit comes to her senses, she makes Jason leave the scene of the accident. He cannot be there when she calls Zack or when the police arrive.

Meanwhile, in the other car, the driver is dying. Dee had the day off from work. Little did she know that on July 8th, her life would be over. According to the police, the impact wouldn't have killed her. However, her recalled faulty airbag did.

From July 8th forward, Brit's life spirals out of control. She goes from having a steady job, a home, and a boyfriend to having nothing. We meet several people throughout the days and most of them are just absolutely no good for Brit. We take a journey right alongside Brit through it all.

This book was a 3-star read for me mainly because of all the unnecessary foul language. Without that, it would have easily been a 4.5. If that does not bother you, definitely give Those We Do Not See by Angie Gallion a read.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Those We Do Not See.

On a tricky intersection, Brit is involved in a fatal accident that sets off a chain of events that see her downfall. Soon enough, she's missing.

An investigator working the case is hit hard be this because he himself has experienced trauma and he needs to deal with it, as well as find Brit.

This was a nice, genre-bending story with a lot of heart and emotion.

A spiraling, gritty, heartbreaking read.

“Those We Do Not See” follows the life of Brit over the best part of a year after she’s involved in a car accident and her life just descends further and further into the shadows. We spend the story with Brit and the investigation police officer Cliff in their smallish town and how so many of us stand on the precipice of calamity.

A well written, immensely readable story.

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
Unbelievable how life can change in a second - Brittany steps out to meet her lover and as they are driving she gets in an accident killing a woman, Her husband kicks her out- drains the bank account they share. She struggles with her guilt and ends up loosing her job and living in the streets with the people no one sees. It’s unreal all the obstacles she must overcome to get a bank account, rent an apartment etc— Can she pull herself out of this mess and begin again? This was a great read!
