Richard Osman is back, proving he has more stories to tell outside of the Thursday clan. I thought Rosie was a really great character, fearless or just unaware of danger? Steve is everyone’s father-in-law, happy with the routine and predictability of life. And Amy is smart, resourceful, and prepared… even when she’s not. Great story, I hope it will be a series.

With We Solve Murders, Osman starts a new series also with quirky amateur detectives solving interesting murder cases. This time around, we get Amy, a hard-ass personal protection agent, her retired-cop father-in-law Steve (her relationship with her own husband is a bit distant but we'll see where that goes in the future I guess), and Rosie, a world-renowned mystery author. The mystery itself is a bit convoluted and I wasn't terribly fond of the ChatGPT aspect, but the characters carried this book. I adored Steve and Rosie, though Amy is a bit of an enigma. I look forward to where Osman takes these characters - and some of the others he teases will have bigger roles in the future, especially Carlos! Big thank you to Pamela Forman Books for Penguin Group and NetGalley for the early access in exchange for my honest opinion.

Author should just stick with their other mystery series. This story was just ok, but not worth more stories with these characters. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.

Osman again creates a world with engaging characters that the reader wants to follow on whatever adventure he sends them on. The trio of famous author, retired cop and bodyguard engages us no matter which perspective the story is being told from. The relationships between the characters are as essential to the enjoyment of the book as the mystery. Can't wait for the next one.

A wonderful mystery with excellent character development and just a touch of absurdist (and maybe a little dark?) humor.

Just finished and it got better. Rea because I loved the first 3 books he wrote. This one takes the reader on a different type of adventure. Amy is being targeted for murder and calls on Dad for help. It took me some time to sort characters and actions.. Last line of the book id the title. We’ll see with book 2.

Have you noticed that every few months some vibrant young social media influencer or minor celebrity dies an early death? The headlines always shock the public by announcing, each time, that these decedents were merely in their 20's or 30's. A lot of us haven't heard of these people, possibly because young as they are, they simply haven't had time to get as much attention as they wanted -- at least until their deaths were announced. Author Richard Osman has clearly noticed the phenomenon and developed this exciting mystery novel around the idea that these deaths are murders. Hurling between multiple characters' perspectives and lots of plot twists, the book moves quickly. Witty dialogue and thoughtful relationships, ever present in Osman's writing, establish a structure of humanity in which the lives of the investigators, the actions of the killers, and the deaths of the victims genuinely matter to readers. I recommend it for readers who anticipate long stints in waiting rooms, airports, and similar settings where they might otherwise lack stimulation.

Filled with light-hearted humor, intriguing mysteries, and fun characters, We Solve Murders is a fun mystery in which Amy Wheeler, an employed bodyguard for Maximum Impact Solutions, is suspected for the murder of three social media influences. She enlists the help of her ex-police father-in-law Steve to help solve the riddle along with famous author Rosie D'Antonio. Their adventure takes them all over the world with the hope of solving everything by Wednesday (so Steve can make it back in time for trivia night).

I would have enjoyed this book more if I had not already read all of Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club books. This story feels like Osman simply took the personalities out of the characters of the Thursday Murder Club and placed them in the characters of We Solve Murders. With a similar voice, tone, and structure, this book may as well have been written for the Thursday Murder Club. An enjoyable, humorous, and engaging read, but one that feels much too similar to the author's other series for it to stand out as anything more than light-hearted, cheesy adventure.

I think anyone who has enjoyed the Thursday Murder Club series will also have fun with this one. An eclectic, engaging set of characters jet-set around the globe to solve an on-going murder spree. I’ll definitely be picking up the next installment when it releases!

We Solve Murders is a delightfully fun start to a new series. It has all of the wit and charm that I have come to expect from this author. It is full of quirky and lovable characters that you will find yourself rooting for. Even the bad guys have a sense of humor. With it’s short chapters and fast pace you will find yourself racing through it to find out who the bad guys really are.

Just like the Thursday Murder Club books, there are multiple characters helping to tell the story. But there are three characters that carry the main storyline and are the heroes of the story.

Steve is an older widow, who is pretty stuck in his life. He has a strained relationship with his son, but gets along great with his daughter in law, Amy. He is a bit on the curmudgeonly side, but under that gruff exterior is a heart of gold. He is also the brains in this investigative duo. He is the one who figures out most of the clues and who the ultimate bad guy is.

Amy is the muscle of the team, although she is pretty smart too. She does push Steve out of his comfort zone, but lovingly so. I really enjoyed her as a character, she is very cool under fire and loves the adrenaline rush she gets from the chase. She has an interesting relationship with her husband, Adam, which probably wouldn’t work for most people, but it does for them. We don’t see much of Adam in this book, but hopefully he will play a bigger part in the next.

I loved Rosie D’Antonio! She was hilarious throughout the book and often was the ray of sunshine when things got dark. I really hope she is part of the series going forward as I think she was essential to the team. She is also smart, and as a famous author she was able to open doors for the others that allowed them to get things done.

The bad guys were just as entertaining as the good guys and there were many of them. There are a lot of red herrings in this story and many of the bad guys turned out to be not so bad, especially when they meet Rosie! With so many people chasing them, and with their motives somewhat hidden, it was hard to figure out who the true bad guys were, just what I like in my mystery thrillers.

The story starts off at a pretty fast clip and keeps that pace up throughout the story. The short chapters also added to the urgency and they kept you involved in the whole story. The multiple points of view also added to the hectic feel of the story, but with everyone’s motives kept somewhat hidden, it was often a surprise when the person you suspect is the true baddy turns out not to be so bad. The story is complex without being overwhelming and it is easy to keep all of the characters straight.

I just loved this first book in what I hope will be an exciting and long series. If you are a fan of the Thursday Murder Club this is a must read. If you have not yet read this author’s books, then this would be a good place to start. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with quirky but fun characters than this is a book that you will enjoy.

It's impossible to review this wonderful crime novel without mentioning Thursday Murder Club at the beginning. This is because All fans of TMC just want another novel with Ron, Elizabeth, Joyce, and Ibrahim. If you're any bit skeptical about beginning We Solve Murders, just look at it as a gateway to making new friends every bit as compelling as the ones in TMG.
Without the characters being defined by the confines of Cooper's Chase, the world is waiting for Amy, Steve, and a cast of others (to mention them might be a slight spoiler). In the character of Steve, we have a character reluctantly drawn into the plot and away from his New Forest village life of pub quiz, sitting on a lakeside bench and talking to his late wife, and performing small investigations for his fellow villagers. Amy (daughter-in-law to Steve) is used to being the kick-ass security of celebrities, but suddenly becomes the pursued.
Richard Osman is a master at blending character and plot, and I welcome this new series into my reading life!

This is a very fun read! It lacks some of the charm and top notch mystery of the Thursday Murder Club series, but the classic Osman humor and intrigue is still very apparent in this one. I didn't think the twist in this was too unexpected, but the journey there was quite enjoyable.

Absolutely loved the book- as much as The Thursday Murder Club if not more so. The characters were endearing. surprising and incredibly well-written. A great plot/mystery as well that kept me guessing until the very end. Highly recommend!

A far-fetched but delightful mystery about an eccentric famous author, her fierce bodyguard, and the bodyguard's father-in-law solving an international murder case that has put them all in danger. Osman's characters are as witty and charming as usual.

I'm not the usual audience for the Thursday Murder Club books, but I picked the first one up and so enjoyed the setting and the characters, their friendship, their retirement community, the crimes they solve, how they solve them, their backstories, and more, that I read them one after the other. I respect the author for branching out from what has become a very successful book series, and apparently a coming TV series, but, for me, though clearly intended to be a new series, these characters lacked the depth and bit of bite the murder club had, I didn't much care what happened, and the writing in those books isn't matched here. I'll read another TMC book, but alas Amy and Steve don't intrigue me.

Thanks to both the publisher and Netgalley for the arc.

The beginning of Osman's debut title in his new series almost made me put it aside. I wanted my old friends from the Thursday Murder Club. I stuck with it and was quickly caught up in the wacky adventures of retired police officer Steve and his daughter-in-law Amy who earns a living as a bodyguard. Her current assignment is guarding the best-selling novelist, Rosie D"Antonio. Rosie, Rosie is hiding out on her private South Carolina island has received a death threat from a Russian oligarch.
Several influencers who were clients of the company Amy works for have died violently and it appears Amy is being framed for the murders.. Enter, father-in-law, Steve. Still grieving his wife's death, he's bored and in a rut but when Amy calls he's on the case. When Amy is threatened the adventure begins. Steve, perfectly content in his small English village soon finds himself flying in a private jet to South Carolina and beyond. Steve and Amy try to find the master mind behind the killings and keep a step ahead to save Amy's life. Rosie joins the fast-paced adventure and adds a new perspective to the term "aging gracefully."
All the characters are well drawn. The plot is intricate and will keep readers guessing. Kudos to Osman !
Thanks to Netgalley and Pamela Dorman Books?Penguin Random House for the opportunity to read the ARC.

Hang on to your hats for a wild ride. Richard Osman branches out from his Thursday Murder Club books with a new series starring private security agent Amy Wheeler and her father in law Steve as they race around the world trying to keep one step away from from being killed themselves. Honestly, this is just a fun book to read. Hope we see more of them in the future.

When I heard Richard Osman was starting a new series featuring a guy and his daughter-in-law as investigators, I thought, OK, this will be one of those village cozy things with a pair of slightly unconventional amateur detectives. Nope. This is a flat-out thriller, with Amy being a tough-as-nails bodyguard in the high-risk personal protection business, and Steve her retired cop father-in-law. Yes, Steve lives in a village and takes on the occasional lost dog case when he’s not too busy with quiz night at the pub, but that’s where the resemblance to your traditional village mystery ends.

Unlike the Thursday Murder Club series, which generally stays in England, this book whizzes all over the world, as Amy and Steve—and Amy’s current protectee, wildly popular author Rosie D’Antonio—chase and flee bad guys and try to find a killer. But, just like the Thursday Murder Club series, the characters are engaging, the plot is twisty, and somehow even the grim threat of death can be funny.

Pleasantly Surprised

4.25 stars

We Solve Murders is an entertaining mystery about a bodyguard, a famous novelist, and a former police detective who unite to solve a mysterious string of murders.

The three main characters are Amy, a bodyguard assigned to protect Rosie, a famous author who has a hit out on her, but it is Amy's life that is in danger, and her lovely father-in-law, Steve, is trying to figure out who is trying to kill her.

The perspectives of the MCs are shared, with additional perspectives of the killer whose voice is masked by ChatGpt, a killer for hire, and one who contracts killers, as well as a few others mixed in. I enjoyed all of the characters, even the villain. Each one has unique quirks that make them stand out.

I was a little hesitant to read this. I am a huge Thursday Murder Club fan, and I didn't know if this book would live up to that series. I also really don't need another series in my life, and the notion that I wouldn't take this one went out the window quickly. The plot is intriguing, and much like the TTMC, the characters are warm, quirky, and endearing, and I look forward to visiting with them again.

This is a fast-paced read with action, drama, and fun. It also has a lot of humor, a great deal of joy, and it made me laugh out loud and smile. There are some flaws; the sentences are a little choppy, and the transitions are rough, but overall, Osman has another winner.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Viking in exchange for an honest review.

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman, while not the Thursday Murder Club, is a fitting new series for those who enjoy slighty odd but lovable characters and a fun story. Amy Wheeler is on an assignment guarding novelist Rosie D'Antonio in South Carolina, while her father in law, ex policeman Steve is enjoying retirement in England. Of course nothing stays that simple as other characters are added, both good and bad to the mix. This is another stand out book and I look forward to any think Richard Osman writes.
