We Solve Murders by Richard Osman.
For those who have loved the Thursday Murder Club, you’ll definitely want to read the first installment of this new series by Richard Osman! Osman uses his signature wit, quirky characters, and crazy situational humor to tell the story of Amy Wheeler, an experienced bodyguard whose latest assignment is working with bestselling author Rosie D’Antonio. When Amy’s position is compromised, she is forced to flee from her post and bring her zany and extroverted high-profile client with her. Her ex-cop father-in-law Steve Wheeler is also dragged into the mystery as they try to figure out who is the criminal behind the rash of murders of up-and-coming influencers?
Join in the fast paced adventures as the crazy characters race towards solving the mystery, saving Amy from being captured and getting Steve back to his comfortable life of trivia nights at the pub, his comfy couch with his cat Trouble, and his nightly conversations with his deceased wife.
Osman has a gift of storytelling and creating lovable characters that are many layered, interesting and humorous. This was a laugh out loud book!

I loved this! Am already a huge fan of the Thursday Murder Club series, and this book has ALL the same appeal, but with a brand-new cast of characters setting out on new adventures. Steve is a widower and retired police officer who lives quietly and likes it that way. Amy is his daughter in law, who is a high-level security specialist who goes on top secret, dangerous assignments all over the world. When Amy is assigned to protect Rosie D'Antonio, the world's most famous and best selling author, things go sideways, and Amy calls in Steve for help. They have a special bond, which is endearing. So -- multigenerational, full of adventure, tons of humor, fast-paced. Readers will love this.

I'll admit, I went into this book a little sad that it wasn't another Thursday Murder Club story, but it didn't take long to fall in love with a new cast of characters.

Amy Wheeler relishes her work in private security, and she loves her weekly check-in with her retired police officer father-in-law, Steve, about her work. When Amy is providing security to famous mystery author Rosie D'Antonio, everything goes a little sideways. An assassins arrives on the private island, but is he after Rosie or Amy? And who can Amy turn to for help when she no longer knows who she can trust?

I can't wait for the next in the series, and more Amy and Steve!

ichard Osman’s newest mystery, We Solve Murders, is the start of a new series. Amy Wheeler is a bodyguard, the kind you’d want, particularly if you were in a movie: a martial arts and firearms expert. She travels the world, protecting the rich and famous and is married to a lovely money manager. They give each other freedom to pursue their careers.

Amy’s best friend is her father-in-law Steve Wheeler, a widower and retired police detective. Steve is ensconced in a sleepy English village where he solves small local mysteries and talks into his dictaphone to his dead wife, whom he misses dearly. He loves his routine, particularly Wednesday-night quiz at the pub, and has a cat called Trouble.

Amy is protecting the second-best-selling author in the world, Rosie D’Antonio, when things go awry. She goes on the run with the freewheeling and ebullient Rosie in tow and drafts Steve to help her.

Plot twists ensue for the book’s collection of offbeat characters, most of whom are untroubled by the kinds of things that would scare the heck out of most of us. I loved that about his Thursday Murder Club series, and I love it about this bunch too.

Ossman does a good job of leaving false trails, including having a character employ ChatGPT, but when it finally comes to sorting out who the bad guys were, my reaction was, “of course.”

Maybe that’s how it should be. I had trouble keeping track of characters, but I will blame my issues with the book on the digital galley not playing nicely with my Kindle; I found the formatting issues maddening.

A fine start to a new series by a delightful author. I predict fun times ahead.

This was a really fast read, but at times it felt like it needed a bit more editing. I like the concept and the way the book finished definitely allows for a at least one or two other books. I didn't like the first few chapters, however. Felt like there was too much info being shoved in.

The author of The Thursday Murder Club brings us new characters in an unusual area of security solving murders. Laugh out loud irreverent humor plus a fascinating relationship between a daughter-in-law and father-in-law make for a fast-paced mystery with characters you want to know.

This was a DELIGHT. I was reluctant to let go of the characters I know and love from The Thursday Murder Club, but this was a hit from the word go. I'd give it an extra star if I could for the wonderful sense of humor.

I liked this one a lot and I think it sets up a future series well. I would have liked to get to know Amy and Steve a little better, but as always Osman does side characters extremely well. Can't wait to see what Rosie gets up to in the next book.

This is so much fun! Kept me turning pages well past my bedtime, trying to figure out the culprits and laughing at Osman's humorous writing and plot. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club (which may be back) or for those looking for something new. Looking forward to a series and perhaps Amy and Steve crossing paths with our Thursday friends.

Readers will take comfort in knowing that Osman’s prowess isn’t limited to the Thursday Murder Club series and should enjoy this separate series as well. Very pleased to say that I now have two series by Osman to recommend!

Net Galley sends another treat my way. Richard Osman, known for his delightful Thursday Murder Club book series scores again with We Solve Murders. Fresh new characters: the retired, widowed ex-cop, his bodyguard daughter in law, and her client, a widely successful, indulgent novelist experience a roller coaster ride of gangsters, assassins, and deception in Osman's usual fast-paced, clever story. Like his previous series, the dialogue is crisp, the characters are strong and complicated and surprising.

If you have enjoyed Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series you will love ‘We Solve Murders’ and if you are new to his books this is a great one to read.
I must admit that when I started to read, the cast of many many characters started to overwhelm, but as I read on it all came together and each person in the book played their part. The writing is witty, sharp and full of intrigue.

Richard Osman is back and better than ever with "We Solve Murders," the first of what I hope are many more books featuring Steve and Amy, two endearing, relatable, and fascinating characters. Rounding out their trio is murder mystery writer, Rosie. "We Solve Murders" has everything you would expect from a Richard Osman mystery: complex and compelling characters, a crime that will keep you puzzled until the very end, and a slightly morally gray approach to committing crimes against people that really deserve it. Once you pick up this book, you will find yourself traveling the world with these characters on an action packed, hilarious, and one-of-a-kind adventure.

I've read and really loved Richard Osman's "Thursday Murder Club" series - can't wait for the adaptation with the all-star cast!! I had some concerns about his next series, but I shouldn't have been concerned, as "We Solve Murders" is another winner!! Retiree cop Steve & his daughter in law, bodyguard Amy, are very capable of picking up the torch & running far with it and I enjoyed watching them solve a murder on a remote island. And the cat!! Fun and easy to read - will look for the next one! My thanks to the publisher & Net Galley for my advanced reader's copy - my pleasure to review this title!!

Penguin Group Viking provided an early galley for review.

I've become a fan of Osman's mysteries over the past few years, having read all of his novels so far. His Thursday Murder Club series is a lot of fun. Of course, when I saw he was putting out a new book in a new series, I had to check it out.

With his two protagonists, Osman is giving us a family affair here. I like the dynamic between the two that shows the similarities and differences between them quickly. The world they move through is also a bit grittier and more ruthless, a nice change from his earlier work. And then there is Rosie, the perfect spice for this combination. I always enjoy characters who are writers.

Of course, there are plenty of interesting and fun secondary characters here as well. The author has a knack at populating his world with folks that we very likely could see again in the sequel(s).

Lastly, I like Osman's use of ChatGPT as an element in the story. As someone who has played around with the AI tool, I found it to be something writers can use to our benefit.

Amy Wheeler is a high-priced bodyguard for some pretty notable clients, as well as anyone who has the funds to secure her services. (For example, right now she's guarding bestselling author Rosie D'Antonio, who has a hit on her after writing a real Russian drug kingpin into her latest novel, and making him look bad in it.) However, when a few social media influencers that she recently guarded wind up dead not long after, Amy's convinced that one of her shadier past clients has designs on Amy's death. With the help of her retired police officer father-in-law, Steve, and Rosie's private jet and connections, Amy's on a world-wide search to track down the mysterious man who wants her dead.

The first non-Thursday Murder Club book by Osman, this one has many of the same hallmarks — goofy older characters, smart younger ones, and a quirky sense of humor — but with a more adrenaline-filled plot. I enjoyed the story immensely, and I was glad to read in the afterword that Osman has more stories of Amy, Steve, and Rosie planned for the future. This will definitely be a hit with Thursday Murder Club fans and those who enjoyed Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn.

I had come to look forward to Osman's novels through the delightful Thursday Murder Club series, loving the interplay of the very different yet complementary leading characters and the twisted scraps they get involved in. I was a bit hesitant to join a new group. However, the main trio here are every bit as quirky and played off one another just as expertly as the beloved quartet. Even the minor characters are fleshed out and fun. I now have additions to two Osman series to look forward to!

Thanks to NetGalley for advance access to this title in exchange for an honest review.

Richard Osman does it again!!! I am a HUGE fan of The Thursday Murder Club series, so I wasn't sure how I'd like a new one. This is a fantastic novel, filled with Osman's humor (it was hilarious), and absolutely delightful characters. The plot kept me guessing until the end, as Richard Osman spins a fine story. I especially loved the father and daughter-in-law aspect, which I found to be unique and the relationship between the two endearing. I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for the next one in the series!!
A big thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for making this ARC available.

Amy is a highly trained private security professional currently protecting a reclusive celebrity author from a death threat. She feels like she has everything in control since they are on an island until dead bodies start appearing and she is number one on the suspect list. When you can't trust the people you work with or for who you gonna call? Your retired father in law of course! Soon Steve, Amy along with the incorrigible author Rosie are globe trotting on a private plane trying to stay ahead of bullets and clear Amy's name. So many secrets, misdirection, missteps and wonderfully witty banter that keeps us picking up Richard Osman's books again and again. Hopefully this is the first in a new series. My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy.
