There are a lot of lessons from this book.Little Wolf's Howl and your kids should be like it. This is a story about finding one’s voice in the world.
This is a very cute book with gorgeous illustrations. I like that the book’s main character was a young wolf. I haven’t often seen animal books about wolves. Great message how it is ok to ask others for help, but still follow your own path to get where you need to go!
What a great read! A huge thanks to Marble Press, the author, the illustrator and NetGalley for the eARC. I really enjoyed the unique and beautiful illustrations, which perfectly complemented the story.
I love how this story not only gave us a tender portrait of a young wolf moving past her insecurity, but also brought humor and levity in the vain of “Are You My Mother?”
This will definitely make its way to our shelves!
In a Nutshell: A cute picture book about a little wolf who discovers her howl just when she needs it. Sweet story, gorgeous illustrations, valuable life lessons, plenty of animals. A great option for little readers.
Plot Preview:
Little Wolf tries hard to howl, but her version sounds more like a hiccup or a whistle. Her siblings laugh at her but not in an insulting way. They find her attempts cute, but Little Wolf wants to be strong and tough like them.
One day, Wolf finds herself lost in the forest after chasing a butterfly. She knows that if she howls, her mother will be able to locate her. But as she can’t, she is determined to remember her mother’s other instruction: “If you are ever lost, find North” and make her way back home. The only problem is, Wolf has no idea who or what or where North is.
This is such an adorable story! Right from its little protagonist to the other animals to the writing and the illustrations, this serves as a wonderful resource for young readers.
While storylines about lost animals/children are scary at times, I loved how this book depicts Wolf keeping her calm and knowing what to do. She doesn’t panic, she remembers her mother’s training, she approaches the right animals for help without hesitation, never loses hope, and never stops trying. Wolf’s adventure shows us that everyone has something to teach us, if only we pay attention.
There are many life lessons here that will help its readers, but they might be enhanced with adult guidance. For instance, a human child can’t really go asking random strangers for help as humans are much more dangerous than animals.
The story is written in simple prose that uses many emotion and reaction words. There are also some onomatopoeic words that add to the effect. I shouldn’t forget the biggest one of these: the wolf’s howl, which gives readers too an opportunity to howl along while reading aloud.
The illustrations are stunning with full-colour graphics in vivid hues on every page. The digital art seems to create a watercolour-like effect of shimmery colours that have just the right balance of soft and bright. The animals as well as the background feel alive through the vibrant sketches. I especially loved the page where Little Wolf is fishing with the bears. The art makes us feel like the water is splashing right before us.
All in all, this is a lovely picture book that balances morals with a healthy dose of humour, adventure, and insights. The content is suitable for kids aged 3-6 years.
4.25 stars.
My thanks to Marble Press for providing the DRC of “Little Wolf's Howl” via NetGalley. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
I thought that this book was great!
I used to be a runner when I was little so I can see the need for a book like this that tells the story of a young wolf who becomes separated and lost from her mum. We were lucky with our daughter as she has never wandered and always holds our hands, but it is easy enough, as the book shows, to become separated and Little Wolf is a great character to use for the story.
The story is easy to follow and understand and it has a great flow. The author gets over the messaging for the book really well and it is a great book to read with children to discuss what they need to do if they do get lost, or separated from a parent as it can be super scary!
The illustrations in the book are really lovely too and work well with the story of Little Wolf.
It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!
I received an ARC of this book, but it expired at the end of July, so…I shall review to the best of my memory.
Little Wolf’s mother gave her some advice: if you’re ever lost, follow the North Star. But she didn’t say what the North Star IS, so when Little Wolf gets lost, she has no idea how to get home. The pup journeys across the wilderness, spending time with other animals, until finally, she learns what the North Star is, and and she runs home to be greeted by howls, and gives back her own first howl.
This story is quite cute and cuddly, and well-suited for young kids. Meeting the different animals provides a bit of education about the Arctic and near-Arctic wild world, although, of course, there’s a bit of fudging of details to keep things kid-friendly (that mama bear would not have welcomed Little Wolf in real life…).
Overall, just a cute little book…and perhaps a reminder to give your kids some definitions for new concepts!
A wonderfully encouraging story about finding your own voice. I loved this book. My kids loved the illustrations especially. We get to follow Little Wolf when she becomes lost after getting separated from her parents. With help from friends Whale, Bear and Goose they set off to find Wolf’s family. She remembers important advice from her mama: “If you're ever lost, find North.”
We really enjoyed this story. It really showed my little ones the importance of finding your own voice and friendship. The adorable illustrations used wonderful colors that created the perfect background to this tale. The story even has a little touch of humor that everyone will love. We loved following along and your family will love this adventure too.
We received this as an ebook ARC and can’t wait to add this to our home collection.
I was drawn to the wolf on the cover first, then the cover art itself. Love children's books about wolves! Cute and adorable story about a wolf cub that can't howl yet. Good for all ages. Make it interactive for the younger by getting creative with your read-a-loud voice ;) Easy to do on this one. The message of it being important to ask for help is important to me.
Little Wolf is strong and fierce, even if her siblings don't agree. She'll show them.
Unfortunately for Little Wolf, she is so busy trying to prove herself to her brothers and sisters she ends up getting lost in the woods. Alone and afraid, she remembers her mother's wise words on how to find home: "Find North." There's just one problem - Little Wolf doesn't know what North is.
Nelly Buchet and Mathias Ball have created the most adorable book in Little Wolf's Howl. The artwork is what initially drew me to the book, and I was delighted to find an thoughtful and creative story, as well. Little Wolf meets all kinds of critters on her journey home, learning and discovering new things as she goes. This is a book all my boys would adore, and I'm sure the artwork will be even more stunning in print. I look forward to seeing Little Wolf's Howl on my bookshelf in the near future.
This is absolutely adorable!! I love how our little wolf cub can’t quite manage to howl at first. Upon getting lost he meets some other animals, all the while looking for North. When he finally sees the North Star (the brightest star in the sky) and heads toward home (using the skills his animal friends taught him) he is then able to howl!!
This is perfect for really any age or child. Toddlers will love learning to howl on the page (or hearing the reader howl).
I do think one of the reasons I love this is my 80lb pitbull dog (who’s just a big baby, named Zero) knows the command ‘speak’ but it often comes out as a sneeze. The kiddos in the park love to ask him to ‘speak’ and that they don’t always get a bark; however when Zero does get out a good bark they get so excited for him. This story reminds me of that kind of excitement when it takes a few tries to do something but eventually you get there.
A wonderful story about being lost, asking for help, and finding your way.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
A beautifully illustrated book about a little wolf who gets lost and finds lots of friends on her journey back home. It sparked great discussions about different animals and how they view things. A bear hibernating vs a wolf sleeping for a few hours, a whale swimming vs a wolf paddling, jumping vs flying. A great story time story and a favorite for young kids.
Thank you to Netgalley for a free preview of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
What a delightfully cute story of a little wolf who finds her way back home. I loved all the animals she encounters on her way home that help her find her way home and helps her realize she is where she belongs. I think this would be a great book for toddlers through Kindergarten. I love the idea of reading this book as a segue into talking to your kids about what to do if they ever become lost.
The artwork is beautiful and perfect for grabbing the attention of little listeners. My son loved howling with Little Wolf as we read the story together.
This book is beautifully illustrated. I loved meeting many animals while the wolf had a great adventure.
The illustrations in this book are absolutely stunning. I couldn’t get over the beautiful colors. The story itself is a fun take on bravery and what true strength means.
The cutest, most delightful story of a little wolf trying to find a home and finding confidence in the process.
The illustrations were beautiful and the confusion of the wolf trying to find North was adorable. It's a perfect, light book for store or library storytimes!
I loved this book so much, that I plan on purchasing a physical copy at the release date. Mathias Ball crushed the illustrations in this book. The book follows a young wolf pup, and the adventures it has trying to find its way back home to its parents. It shows kids determination and resilience during a tough situation of being separated from your family.
This was such a cute little story. I like how the wolf met new friends and learned new things from them that they used to get back home. Illustrations are so cute too.
Living in Alaska, wolves are, while maybe not a common sight, something Alaskans are accustomed to seeing. I especially loved this tale of Little Wolf learning to howl, knowing that if my corgi mix, albeit from the northern realms of Alaska could do it, so could Little Wolf. While Daisy came off as, well, cute, there is nothing quite like a wolf's distant howl against a night sky to grab ones attention. Delightfully illustrated with colors that call to mind cooler nights and fall, we follow Little Wolf on a journey to find herself only after losing herself in the wilderness. No, don't worry. Not scary.
In fact, she makes lots of new friends along the way, ultimately following Whale's advice to follow the brightest star in the north. Bear even teachers her to catch a salmon, quite relevant right now as many tune into the internet to watch bears fishing along Alaskan streams and, yes, the occasional wolf is spotted. Along the way Little Wolf learns new skills and ultimately finds her way to a high place and that northern star glistening in the night sky. She feels both hope and loneliness, illustrated by the, whoa, echoing howl that somehow comes from her depths. She's not only found her howl, she also finds that it brings her home to her family. All in all, a sweet, sparsely told story made all the more magical by the illustrations. I swear, you'll swear some of them are swirling.
Children will delight in this tale, surely enjoying not just the scenes laid out before them but identifying the various creatures Little Wolf encounters. The word choices are simple yet effective, with the pictures drawing you in. Thanks #NetGalley and #MarblePress for allowing me to check in on Little Wolf early. I liked the feel of the book, quite true to a wolf's nature habitat in the north and imagine children will enjoy this sweet tale of learning as you grow and, yes, make mistakes.
Little Wolf's Howl is adorable story about Little Wolf's journey after she becomes lost. The illustrations were so colorful and adorable, and the story was so sweet.

I love wolves, I love picture books, this book was made for me! The illustrations are soft and colorful. I would definitely gift this book to any young child!
