While I cannot recommend this book as part of my curriculum, I intend to recommend this to a few of my more advanced students. This book tells the story of Rachel who finds her grandmother's journals. She began reading and discovers the cycle of physical and emotional abuse documented, and her desire to protect her children.
It was a great read that I couldn't put down. I was drawn into the characters and found myself talking to them, and myself, throughout the book.
I was given the opportunity to read this book by NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
There is a lot of depth to this book and it is difficult to classify it within a single genre. The family relationships are complex and key to the core plot line. The writing itself is excellent - descriptive without being overdone and with extremely engaging dialogue, which helps build the sense of family relations.
Said the Spider to the Fly is a painful look at a multi-generational family entangled in verbal and physical abuse told through a grandmother's journals. Set on the secluded Possum Island with no electricity or indoor plumbing. The family vacation home of generations is the center of the epic storms in their lives.
Written with all the feelings of rage, thunder, shock, and horror that almost made me lose my breath at times, yet ended with me wanting to know more.
