The plot has a compelling and intriguing premise, especially for a psychological thriller. The concept of a true crime podcast where confessions can lead to unexpected twists is quite modern and relevant. Here are some aspects of the story that stand out:
Poe Webb is a well-developed protagonist with a traumatic past that shapes her actions and decisions. The internal conflict she faces about whether she killed the right person adds depth to her character and keeps the audience engaged.
The idea of Ian Hindley claiming to be the real killer creates a gripping tension. The stakes are raised significantly when he abducts Poe’s boyfriend, which adds urgency and danger to the plot.
The story also explores themes of guilt, the quest for truth, and the consequences of one's actions. Poe's journey from being a victim to possibly being a murderer herself raises ethical questions that can provoke thought in the audience.
The revelation that Ian is Leopold's brother adds another layer of complexity and can serve as a shocking twist that kept me on my toes.
Overall, your plot is engaging and has the potential to keep readers guessing until the end. It combines elements of suspense, moral dilemmas, and psychological depth, which are key components of a successful psychological thriller.
🎙️ M A N I P U L A T I O N M O N D A Y review 🎙️ featuring “Tell Me What You Did” by Carter Wilson!
BOOK REVIEW: 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤/5
Poe Webb hosts a popular true crime podcast that gets people to anonymously confess their crimes to her. She listens to all the gruesome and shocking details of other people’s heinous crimes … meanwhile she isn’t so innocent herself.
When Poe was a child she witnessed her mother’s brutal murder and never told a soul. The murderer threatened to kill her and her father if she ever spoke a word of what she saw. She spent years searching for her mother’s killer and refused to give up on getting revenge 🔪!
When a new guest on her show claims to be her mother’s murderer, Poe is totally thrown off. This man knows a lot of specific details about what happened that only she and him would know. But this doesn’t make sense at all because Poe killed the murderer herself years after the fact … or did she??
🔥 HOT DAMN this book is FANTASTIC!! This book is so multi layered and gripping that I became immediately locked in and ignored all life responsibilities to finish it! I already love a podcast thriller, but the addition of a devious cat and mouse game with a possible serial killer just added to the intensity and creepiness of the story line!
Thank you kindly to @carterwilsonauthor @poisonedpenpress @netgalley for my advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review! This book releases on January 28th, 2025!
Firstly, I am so glad I decided to read this one during the week leading up to Halloween – it felt like I was living the plot alongside the main character. This story was fantastic, the twists were fun, and the story was super atmospheric. I liked that the story was told through a true crime podcast; I felt like this was a fun and timely update for a thriller set in today's world. All in all, I give this one 4.5/5 spooky stars. Super fun read that I'd 100% recommend to our library patrons.
Wow. This book was incredible. The plot was super twisty. I love the podcast aspect and the interview style. Poe was a badass I loved every part of her character and storyline.
The only reason I didn’t give a 5 star is because this could have been about 70-100 pages shorter. I think the story could have been told without being as wordy or going over the same parts a little too much.
However overall this was a great read. Solid 4 stars. I will definitely recommend reading it.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
In true Carter Wilson fashion, this one starts off with a bang! Tell Me What You Did strikes a great balance of excitement, providing delightfully disturbing material, giving the reader fully developed characters, and containing an intriguing plot-line throughout. True crime lovers should gravitate to this one. The premise? A now-adult podcast host whose mother was brutally murdered in front of her at a young age runs a true crime podcast where guests anonymously confess their most terrible secrets live on air. When an oddly familiar man comes onto Poe’s podcast and confesses to murdering her mother, Poe’s world begins to quickly unravel when the man seems to have fully turned his attention on her now. The crazy part? Up until this disturbing man appeared, Poe was convinced she’d already tracked down her mother’s killer and killed him herself years prior…
Yes, it’s just as much of a thrilling page-turner as it sounds! Bonus: it switches between the story and the podcast in such a fun and engaging way.
Huge thank you to Carter Wilson, Poisoned Pen Press, & NetGalley for the ARC! All opinions are my own.
Tell me what you did by Carter Wilson
Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Press!
Poe is a podcaster who does live streams with killers and provides them a platform for confessions. Although these conversations can incriminate and be interesting for some. It also opens up dialogue for someone to dredge up the past. Poe has a history and there is someone who knows. They out here on a podcast and it is then a cat and mouse game to find out who knows. This book was a trip for sure and had me turning the page like a fanatic! It had an amazing climatic ending that I will think about for a while!
What an incredible story and it definitely held my attention as well.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The premise was very intriguing to me, especially the true-crime podcast angle. I thought the suspense was well-written and spaced out. The pacing kept me engaged the entire time and I was able to finish this book fairly quickly. I was very invested in the characters, especially the main character, Poe. She was morally grey, but still a believable and sympathetic character with depth. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys twisty thrillers and is interested in true-crime podcasts.
Tell Me What You Did by Carter Wilson is a thriller about a woman named Poe Webb who hosts a true crime podcast where guests come on to confess their sins. When Poe was in her early teens, she witnessed the brutal murder of her mother, and she exacted revenge on the man who killed her. At least she thought she did until a man, Ian Hindley, comes onto Poe’s podcast and confesses that he is the murderer. This is not a spoiler because it all goes down in the very beginning, and then the crazy starts.
I am still trying to understand the podcast craze. I’ve never been one for being able to listen to someone talk for extended periods without my mind wandering off repeatedly. Poe’s podcast is really out there given that people are confessing to crimes. Some of them are minor, and some are very major. I am not a lawyer, but some of the legal aspects of this book seem pretty far-fetched.
This is written in a unique way, at least for me. A good portion of this book is written in an interview transcript format. That type of dialogue can really make or break a book when you have so much space devoted to it. For me, it works here because of Poe’s attitude and the sadistic cunning in the communications from Hindley.
Some of the things Poe has done in her past are beyond crazy; no spoilers, but she needs intensive therapy at the barest of minimums. But the razor-sharp dialogue works for me, and the creepy factor is off the charts. The description of the antagonist in this book created an image in my head that won’t be leaving anytime soon.
The murders in this book are violent and descriptive, so if that isn’t your cup of tea, just be aware. There are also a couple of pets in this book that you will grow attached to, and pets in thrillers always stress me out. I can read about humans getting killed until the cows come home, but I can’t stomach reading about animals dying.
The scenario with law enforcement being unbelievable is why I detracted half a star, but I am still rounding up to 5. I will check out more from this author for sure.
Thanks, NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press, for the advance copy of this book. I truly enjoyed it!
Just whoa! This book was amazing! I love the way the author presented this story as it just kept me hooked from start to finish.
I really enjoyed the characters right down to the dog and cat. 5 Star all the way and I will definitely be looking for more t read from Carter
Wilson.
Tell Me What You Did is the podcast Thriller of my dreams! The strength of this book for me was the format. The past and future timelines were bolstered by the podcast episodes. Wilson weaved the plot through the podcast so flawlessly. I wish a podcast like Poe’s really existed, I would absolutely tune in. My favorite duo was Bailey the dog and Grimm the cat. Bailey, Grimm, and Poe’s dad really humanized her. Without them, she was kind of an unlikeable character. The podcast transcripts and the descriptions of Hindley’s face and menacing voice were so immersive it was almost suffocating. The cat and mouse back and forth had me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. Easy 5 stars! I would recommend this one to true crime and thriller fans that are looking for a fast paced read. I am eyeballing Carter Wilson’s backlist.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I finished it rather quickly, and found myself guessing who was who and what was about to unfold. There were a couple things I guessed correctly, and others that evaded me until they unfolded on paper.
The writing, and back and forth time hop between chapters, kept things interesting, and made it hard to put the book down.
Poe, despite her demons, was a very lovable character-- I felt deeply for what she had been through, and her love for her dad and dog. While she had made decisions that most of us aren't able to relate to, I was able to understand why she would've done that, and I respected her for it.
I would def. recommend this read-- and I've already added it to my must-buy list!
This chilling psychological thriller grabs hold from the start, with a disturbing and suspenseful plot that will keep you on edge until the very end. The complex villain is deeply unsettling, evoking comparisons to real-life serial killers, and the mounting tension leaves you breathless as it hurtles toward its shocking conclusion. The story of Poe Webb, a true crime podcaster harboring her own secret, adds an intriguing layer of mystery, making this a gripping read for fans of intense thrillers.
Fast paced and action packed. This exceeded expectations. 4.5 rounded up to 5... I just wanted a little more at the end, but enjoyed this very much
Great book. Couldn't stop reading it. Stayed up all night just to finish. I was hooked from the very first page.
OMG, I loved this book! I read it in 1 day. I didn't expect it to be such an incredible read as I had never heard of the author before. Now I need to read his 2018 thriller Mister Tender's Girl where Alice is the protagonist.
From page 1, I was hooked. Coincidentally I started reading on Halloween 🎃👻 & my son's name is Ian. Initially I thought Poe was a guy until I reread the book overview. It was a very absorbing, quick read. I liked how Bailey & Grimm were characters in the book. I suspected Grimm might have played a role in helping Poe, Kip & her dad.
I don't want to give away any spoilers so I'll just say if you're into thrillers &/or true crime podcasts, READ THIS BOOK.
Whenever I begin a Carter Wilson book (and I've read them all), I know I'm in for surprises, twists, excellent writing, and unique topics. With podcasts being so popular in today's world, it's fitting that this is the setting for this book. The characters are vivid, the topic is current, and the story is Wilson's usual blend of mystery, creepy, and surprises. As usual, this is another great read from Carter Wilson
Thank you Poisoned Pen Press for providing me an ARC. Tell Me What You Did is a fast moving thriller full of delicious tension. Our main character Poe is balancing a life of isolation while being a successful true crime podcast host. When a new guest drops a bomb on her most recent recording session, Poe is sent into a mental and emotion spiral, trying to relive traumatic events and justify her past actions.
Tell Me What You Did is an interesting premise. The podcast has a key role in much of the plot, and is structured in a way that provides a lot of intrigue and keeps you hooked. I enjoyed that Poe is a character that is no bull, but because she keeps secrets we don't know if we can trust her narrative.
The antagonist is bone chillingly creepy and it executed very well. The back and forth between past and future timelines is constructed well, and helps keep the reader engaged in what is essentially a contained environment.
I was also happy to hear that this book has a tie-in to one of the author's previous books, so I'll probably pick that one up too.
I really enjoyed this book! It was fast paced and full of action. I felt for the characters and were rooting them on the whole time. There were a couple of twists along the way but nothing jaw dropping. I ended up with 4 stars because I wish there was more at the ending. I felt so invested in the story and then thought the ending just fell short a bit. Still a great read though and would definitely recommend!
Easily one of my top 5 books of the year. This book took over my mind 24/7. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. Carter Wilson is an absolute master of suspense, I found myself on the edge of my seat for almost the entire book. I adore Poe for who she is, all of her flaws included. My absolute favorite character was definitely her father, and I really enjoyed the bond between him and his firefly. An absolute masterpiece of a thriller.
Content Warnings: Gore (Minor), Intense Violence (Minor), Stalking (Major), PTSD (Major)
Wilson's book was a taut read that sucked me in. I'm a fan of true crime when it's done respectfully or with an eye to advocating for victims and survivors and bringing justice -- so the premise of a podcast where people could confess to crimes was immediately interesting as it's almost the polar opposite. Poe herself is a multifaceted character with a complex mindset, someone for whom I could root even if I didn't always align 100% with her viewpoint. The work itself was well written, alternating between a live broadcast and then Poe's retelling of the past leading up to that moment -- until they combine in the final climax. It did take a little getting used to while reading, but it was pretty quick and not as jarring as some other dual structure narratives I've read.
I'd definitely recommend this book for true crime fans and anyone who enjoys a gripping thriller.
