Ever since he was a kid, Zaheer knew he wanted to be a hero. The only way to be one was to leave the city and join the army. To go against his enemies, the Zypehirans. Twenty years ago, the worlds Earth and Zypher joined. Since then a group of people built a fortress around the new city to defend against the Zypherians. After he joins, he notices not everything is what it seems. Zaheer must make a choice: either stay in the fortress and abide by his leaders’ decisions or betray his people and save the Zypherian.
The reason why I decided to read this debut novel, is mostly because of the description. I love the conflicts where a character has a choice to make that will result in gains and losses. The beginning was great with world-building, and introducing characters and their quirks. However, halfway through the book it was filled with unnecessary information, resulting in a slow-paced plot. That was the time when I wanted to DNF the book, but I managed to continue. I did like the extra content at the end where several pairs of characters were interacting with each other. It was a bit out of place since the writing style changed from novel to script writing.
The characters were bland, especially the main character.
I did not relate - or was even remotely interested - to any character.
I was hoping there would be more fragments of Hero’s memories since we could see a character that is having an internal conflict of becoming the best hero or the opposite. His abandonment issues, and his goal to befriend those who have different values than him, will make him do things that will question his actions.
I liked the mystery behind Hero, Ziraan, and the disappearance of the fairies. I hope if the author writes the next book there will be more answers to solve the mystery once and for all.
