Humans and Vampires, yes please.
The backstories and world building for this story was great, I really enjoyed it.

I wanted to like this book but unfortunately it just was not doing it for me. I really was curious and interested in the story but I found it difficult to full immerse myself into this book. I was having trouble following along at times and found the grammatical errors/reusing of phrasing distracting. I think if this was more heavily edited I would have been able to enjoy this book, but it was a struggle to even get halfway through.

I really enjoyed this book. It was filled with adventure, forbidden love, vampires, and so much more. I don't want to spoil it for other readers, but I definitely recommend this one. The characters, and their relationships were so well written. I loved how the chemistry between Livia and Orion was throughout the book. I admit that I was hooked from the beginning, and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read more from this author. I absolutely recommend this to the fantasy and vampire lovers out there.

Thank you Net Galley and M. J. Sweets

Wow I loved this book from the beginning even though it was long the paged kept me enthralled in wanting to read till the very end. I found the characters to be very detailed and I loved the FMC for how courageous she was to run for the safety of her life. The MMC was strong and fierce and protective, although he gave off the persona that he was a tyrant at first meeting. That changed the more a that I got to know the MMC and I soon began to understand his demeaner.
Livia is a wonderful and strong woman, she grew up around the werewolves and was literally raised by them from a tender age. when she was in danger she ran for her life. Not knowing who would be her save her she ran to the nearest shelter she could find. The nearest castle and not knowing who the castle belonged to. She only knew that she needed help and protection.
Orion is the King of the vampires and he actually cares for his people and those that are under his care. He doesn't stand for deceitfulness and is very cautious with those he suspects are not truthful with him. When he meets Livia he discovers that she is more then just a human that he is protecting and giving shelter to. He develops strong feelings for her that makes him want to desire her but he is also scared of what and how she may feel about him and of what he is.
This story takes you on a long adventure through a battle between Vampires and Werewolves and then a much deserved peace where good triumphs over the evil. there is a twist or two of which I loved as they made me more curious of what was going to happen next.
So, if you enjoy a Handsome MMC, a Strong and Courageous FMC, Wonderful Happy Endings then this is the book for you.

Vampire King’s Consort by M.J. Sweets is a dark, brooding paranormal romance that offers familiar tropes of forbidden love, supernatural intrigue, and star-crossed fate. While the premise—a world fractured between Humans, Vampires, and Lycans—sets the stage for high-stakes political and emotional drama, the execution doesn’t always deliver the depth necessary to fully immerse readers. However, for fans of gothic castles, brooding vampire kings, and fated connections, there’s enough allure here to keep you turning the pages.

Livia, the human protagonist, is introduced as a lone wanderer burdened by a tragic past, which immediately makes her sympathetic. However, her character sometimes feels underdeveloped—her motivations are hinted at but rarely explored in a way that deepens her personality. While her resilience in the face of both supernatural politics and emotional upheaval is admirable, moments where she actively takes control of her fate are sporadic. There are flashes of inner strength that could have been expanded to make her arc feel more empowering.

Orion, the vampire king, fits the archetype of the brooding, reluctant leader to a tee—aloof, ancient, and caught between duty and his growing desire. His internal struggle between banishing Livia and his compulsion to protect her is compelling, but it leans heavily into familiar territory without offering much that feels new. The chemistry between them is palpable at times, especially in their quieter, more vulnerable exchanges, but the "insta-love" nature of their connection feels a bit rushed. A slower, more gradual burn would have given their relationship more emotional resonance.

The political backdrop of the three species' strained relations is an interesting concept, and the centuries-old tension between humans, vampires, and lycans provides a rich setup for conflict. However, much of this world-building remains surface-level. The history of the species’ isolation and the nuances of their distrust are mentioned but not fully fleshed out. As a result, the stakes surrounding Orion’s decisions and Livia’s presence in the castle feel somewhat muted rather than urgent.

The writing style is evocative in places, with lush descriptions of Orion’s eerie castle and the moonlit forest surrounding it. However, there are moments when the prose feels overly dramatic or weighed down by clichés common to the genre. Some dialogue, particularly between Orion and Livia, veers into melodramatic territory, which can either enhance the gothic atmosphere or feel overwrought, depending on the reader’s taste.

The pacing is also uneven. The initial chapters build suspense and intrigue well, but the middle section lags as the characters tread familiar ground of brooding longing and vague conversations about fate. The climax brings some much-needed intensity, though it arrives a bit late in the narrative.

At 3 stars, Vampire King’s Consort is an entertaining but imperfect entry into the paranormal romance genre. M.J. Sweets delivers on the gothic vibes, tragic romance, and supernatural allure that fans of brooding vampire kings and mortal entanglements crave, but the story could have benefited from deeper character development and a more complex exploration of its political and emotional stakes. If you’re looking for a quick, moody romance with classic vampire-human dynamics, this will scratch that itch—just don’t expect it to stray far from familiar paths.

I really wanted to like this books but from the go you could tell it was going to be a very wordy read. It seems like someone may have needed to give another pass of editing or they used some AI to help. The images in the beginning also may have been AI and that just doesn't sit well with me. Unfortunately, I will not being finishing at this time, but if it is republished or at another time I may revisit to see if there were edits made to help with the flow of the story.

I think this book had a lot of potential, but it was very difficult to get over the lengthy wording and over descriptiveness. For this reason it was a DNF for me.

Thank you to the publisher and author for the eARC.

The plotline of this dark paranormal romance sounded so intriguing, and I’ll read anything with vampires. I really wanted to love it, but I struggled with the writing style. It felt strange, with too much overexplaining and a lot of telling instead of showing. I didn’t feel much emotional connection to the story or the characters. Even though things were often overexplained, there were times when important details seemed missing, and I found myself unsure of what was going on. Unfortunately, this book just wasn’t for me.

Didn’t get a chance to read this arc before it was archived! I will definitely be checking it out and reviewing it anyway as it looks exactly like something I would enjoy!

I am really stunned that a book like this has gone without scrutiny. This is very, very, very clearly edited or partially written with AI. It took me a few chapters to understand what was so uncanny and off with the writing but as soon as I annotated all of the uncanny portions and popped them into a humanizer tool to un-ai writing that it became very clear that this work is AI assisted. And hey that can be very helpful for research and character development. But to USE IT in your final self pub draft. I am so annoyed and saddened that no one has written about the ai use before me in a review.

My tips for spotting questionable work:
Pay attention to the author's website - they should have something - or their social media. They should have a facebook or insta and definitely be trying to promote
The writing should not repeat casual phrases - not talking SJM's like for like but in this book: pink luscious lips (ew)
The writing style should vary depending on the chapter and part of the plot
The characters should stand out but not be a caricature - in this case both Orion and Livia were like cartoon versions of good characters

This book has an interesting premise and the writing is simple and easy to read. The fast pace helps with the reading. Orion and Olivia are a good couple and love story.

This could definitely use another round of editing, but I was captivated by the story. I love a vampire romantasy and this was very entertaining and spicy. Though it slowed down a bit halfway through, it was still enjoyable. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.

3.5stars-VAMPIRE KING’S CONSORT is the first instalment in MJ Sweets’ adult, paranormal, fantasy series focusing on the three kingdoms- Humans, Vampires, and Lycan. This is vampire King Orion, and human Livia’s story line.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Orion and Livia) VAMPIRE KING’S CONSORT follows the building relationship between our story line couple as Livia struggles to survive as human in a world dominated by lycans and vampires. Livia lived most of her life within the lycan compound but was forced to run to save her own life. Tossed between the vampire kingdom and the human kingdom. On the run from the lycans who have targeted our story line heroine, Livia found herself the consort to the vampire king, the soulmate of a man who spent most of his time staving off war and the advancement of his enemies.

The relationship between Orion and Livia is one of fated mated. Livia is a human living in a world of the supernatural but a world in which she grew. Orion knows immediately that Livia is his soulmate but Orion takes his time claiming the woman with whom he will fall in love. The $ex scenes are passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters are numerous including vampires, lycans, humans, elves, fairies and pixies. From royalty (King Reon, , Crown Prince Cesteil, Prince William, King Darian) to merchants, security and specialities ( Caelestis the healer), and the mundane, everyone becomes suspect in the wake of the number of threats and attempts against our heroine’s life.

VAMPIRE KING’S CONSORT is a slow building story, with a few familiar plot-points similar to a now famous trilogy made into a four-part movie series. There is some redundancy; and some aspects that I have questioned including whether or not the worlds had experienced an industrial revolution; there is a mention of only one motor vehicle on the road, and a clock, yet everyone else rides horses, in carriages, carry swords and daggers etc. There is no worldly reference to any other automation or timeframe. The villages and towns have no names other then the kingdom of lycans, kingdom of vampires, yet the human kingdom where the Elves have now laid claim to land, were once filled with electronics and technology, yet no history is revealed as to the loss of available automation and machinery.

VAMPIRE KING’S CONSORT is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, racism and speciesism, acceptance and love. The premise is detailed and dramatic but did suffer with some issues; the romance struggles with time spent apart; the characters are determined and dynamic.

I could not finish this book. I want to say that I am very thankful for the ARC but the writing was choppy and it was difficult to follow along with the story. I tried to go back and force myself to finish but I just couldn't do it. I got through about 25% when I finally just put it down.

The premise of this book was enticing and made me excited to read it, however the actual text fell flat for me. I was at a lull at about 40% through that was hard to push through as the pace of the story was stagnant and needed to have a bit more action to keep me interested. Overall a 1.5-2 star rating. I enjoyed the characters but would benefit from being faster paced.

This book has some promising elements, particularly its entertaining storyline. The author also has a talent for creating intriguing scenarios that hold the reader’s interest.

However, the execution of the story makes it difficult to fully enjoy. The storyline is often convoluted, with a fragmented writing style that makes the plot hard to follow. Abrupt shifts in focus and overly complex sentence structures disrupt the flow, making it challenging to stay immersed in the narrative.

The prose itself could use significant refinement. Awkward phrasing, such as “his spy took place in front of it” and “he had held together,” complicates simple ideas unnecessarily. Redundancy, like repeated words in close proximity, further bogs down the pacing. These issues, combined with numerous grammatical errors—such as the misuse of “then” instead of “than”—make for a distracting reading experience.

While the story has potential, I cannot recommend this book in its current format. With careful editing to streamline the prose, address grammatical mistakes, and clarify the storyline, this book could be a much stronger and more enjoyable read.
