I was excited to try a new to me historical romance author. I had not read any in this series, but this intrigued me enough to go back and read the previous books. A son born on the "wrong side of the sheet" finds attraction to the most beautiful "diamond" of the season, but his lack of legitimacy complicates matters. I enjoyed the story, although I'm not a fan of the "I'm so beautiful, people don't understand me" trope. Recommend the series for fans of historical/regency romance with spice.
Thank you to Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for eARC of the book in exchange for a review.
Ultimately, this book fails to live up to my expectations. I find the pacing too slow at times and cannot, for the life of me, see the chemistry between the leads. Emily E K Murdoch's writing is as always enjoyable but the story itself is unfortunately forgettable compared to the other books in this series.
When has he ever had half a chance at anything? Being born .... nope. Getting on with his brothers.... nope. Getting the most beautiful girl.... nope. Ummm... not sure. Well ... maybe for a little while at least. It's the pretending that's gonna get him.
I sooo wanted Pernith to get his due, especially since he was the one who helped all the other brothers. He was the one I was rooting for to get the happiest of happily ever after. I absolutely adored this book. There were some nail biting sections but....
Me and Emily are like this man like this and she wouldn't do that to us would she? (Wink, wink) 🤣

Half a Chance is the fourth book in The Chances series. Each book is about a Chance brother.
There are three brothers and one-half brother. This is Frederick's story. He is the bastard brother who was taken in but never treated the same as the brothers. The family had four titles; each brother was given one. As the Viscount Pernrith he has kept others at arm's length. He happens to be at a ball where he finds Edie who is hiding from possible suiters. He is taken by Edie from the first moment.
Edie is given the title 'Flourishing Rose by the Queen. Edie is annoyed by the continued use of the title which her father continues to repeat. Edie finds herself drawn to Frederick but does not want to marry. But when she is compromised, she talks Frederick into a pretend engagement. until they can break it off. This brings all of Frederick's insecurities to the surface. But when the time comes will they be able to break it off and part ways.
This was a fun story for Frederick. I have been waiting to read his story and was rewarded with a great story for him.
Another winner in the Chance family series. I was eagerly awaiting Fredericks' match and was not disappointed. Edith was a perfect counterbalance to Frederick. Being illegitimate, Frederick feels he isn't good enough for Edith. Thus we begin the "dance". I enjoyed my front row seat to love unfolding. I recommend this as well as the previous books in the series. I just love the Chance family!
Thank you Emily E K Murdoch, Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest feedback.
As the illegitimate son of the late Duke of Cothrom, Frederick Chance, Viscount Pernrith is known as half a Chance. He is tolerated by his three brothers and ostracized from the best circles. His title is a pity gesture from the family that never truly accepted him, and his bastard origins mean no one in Society will take him seriously. Yet when he meets Miss Edith Stewart, she seems genuinely interested in him. When an illicit encounter leaves them forced, for now, to pretend there’s an engagement between them, their feelings begin to grow.
The main characters of Frederick and Edith are so well suited, with Edith caring little for society’s expectations, whilst Frederick is simply captivated by her. I enjoyed this romance as it blossomed despite either of them having any great expectations. A great read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
We join the Chance brothers again in this fourth and last book in the series. This last brother has always felt left out, and society will not fully accept him because of his birth.
It is better to read this series in order because the brothers interact quite a bit, so you could spoil the other books for yourself if you read out of order.
Our heroine is frustrated by the way society, and sometimes her father, treat her as nothing more than a pretty object.
Miscommunication and gossip that is widespread but hidden from sheltered young ladies is what often intrigues them, and can get them in trouble.
The characters are wonderful and I am happy with the way this story brings the series to a close.
Good fun.
This book was the fourth in the series and I did not read the previous books. This probably would have helped as I enjoyed the family aspect of the story and the relationship between the brothers. I also liked the secondary romance between Edie’s father and chaperone. The book started rather slowly, but Edie and Frederick were clearly made for each other and it was a relief when they finally figured it out.
Frederick, Viscount Pernrith, is a loner, eventhough he has three half brother's and their wives. Meeting in an alcove at a ball hiding, Edie Stewart and Frederick almost create a scandal. Found in a compromising position by her father, Edie's quick solution is a fake engagement. Frederick is hesitant, but agrees. Feelings and physical attraction invite possibilities of a real engagement, but Frederick comes with half ties with society's acceptance. Edie has to make a choice. Reading this came with elation and heartbreak with a couple so right for each other. Keep the tissues handy.
Descriptive sex.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.
Loved Penrith's story! I have adored his character all the way through the series, and am so happy to finally read his story. Edie is the perfect lady for him to meet! Their story shows how easy it is to misunderstand each other. They both want to protect the other without communicating which always leads to trouble!
Being the half brother of the Chance brothers makes Viscount Chance a Half a Chance in the eyes of the ton. He catches the eye of the prettiest girl in the room, but he knows that it will never be. But he knew that he would never be right for her.
A read that will keep you reading to see if Edie and Fred are able to make a match or not.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and DragonBlade and leaving a review by my own accord.
This book was great! It was just what I wanted in a historical romance book. The setting was perfect and I could not put this book down.
So far my favorite book in the series and Frederick is definitely my favorite brother! It's a very emotional story with heartwrenching moments, some steam and very likable characters (at least most of the time). Frederick and Edie have so much in common, people don't see past their superficial first impression of them, aren't interested in their character, feelings and personalities. They are judged and condemned for things for which they are not responsible. Sometimes I really wanted to scream out loud in anger and frustration because of the way Frederick was treated and how he suffered.
It is not essential to have read the earlier books in the series, but I still recommend it as it gives the reader a better understanding of the dynamics between the Chance brothers.
Because of his illegitimate lineage, Frederick Chance, Viscount Pernrith, is hated by his younger brother, barely tolerated by the other two and despised and ridiculed by high society. As much as he tries to fit in and do everything right, he doesn't feel part of the family or society, who derisively refer to him as "Half A Chance".
At a ball, he meets Edith "Edie" Stewart in an alcove where he is hiding and is immediately attracted to her.
Edie has arrived in London for her season and is named "Flourishing Rose" of the season by the Queen. As much as she loves the gossip papers, she doesn't like being admired by society only for her beauty rather than her personality. Frederick is different, he seems to really "see" her and she also recognises and likes the person behind his façade. When the two are caught by her father in a compromising situation, they decide to fake an engagement, even though they both secretly wish it was real...
All in all, a very touching strangers-to-friends-to-lovers love story with lots of emotional turmoil and misunderstandings between the protagonists, which I am happy to recommend!
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
I just love the story of Frederick and Evie. They are two people with different paths through life but truly only want to be seen for who they are. Not what the ton wants to see them as but as two beautiful people with great value. From an author with great creative skills, comes this fourth book in a long series. Each story can stand on its own yet this author has such talent that once you begin one, you will want to know about the entire larger than life family. Full of steam, romance and more.
Thank you netgalley for the arc!! i enjoyed reading it!! cant wait to read more of the chance series!!!
Happy pub day!!!!
I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every book from this series to date. This book was one of my personal favorites out of the entire series. Highly recommend!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is not my favourite of the series, but I loved the focus on the illegitimate brother. Looking forward to the rest of the series following the next generation of Chances.
Frederick Chance, Viscount Pernrith, isn’t really a Chance. Not entirely. The illegitimate son of the late Duke of Cothrom, he’s tolerated by his three brothers and ostracized from the best circles. His title is a pity gesture from the family that never truly accepted him, and his origins mean no one in Society will take him seriously. Miss Edith Stewart, on the other hand, is rather sick of Society’s attention. She’s far more interested in the forbidden. The edges of Society. Those to whom she should, apparently, not be speaking.
An illicit encounter leaves Frederick & Edith forced, for now, to pretend there’s an engagement between them.
The fourth book in the series & the one I’ve been waiting for. I’ve loved Frederick throughout the series & he needed someone very special, did he find that person in Edith? Well that would be telling! My heart has bled for Frederick & the way society has treated him, the author really portrayed how mean spirited the ton could be as well as blinkered & narrow minded. I liked Edith but found hr a little naïve. I enjoyed their journey to a HEA but I felt Frederick deserved more
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
This one started off a little slow and I was a bit hesitant but then the story picked up and it was really sweet. I was hoping for a bit more development for the story between the 4 brothers than I got but overall it was still a lovely story.
Two halves make a whole...
~ Edith & Frederick ~
She’s a baron’s only daughter who made her come-out a little late and promptly received a distinguished title by the queen because of her beauty. Trouble is, none of the gentlemen ever bothered to get to know her after that, and her father won’t stop parading her around.
He’s a viscount, a duke legitimised by-blow who was given a title by his eldest brother upon their father’s death. He didn’t want it, nor the notoriety that came with it. Especially since he was never treated as a true member of their family, despite the new duke’s best efforts.
She wants a love match and he believes himself unlovable.
Both lonely in a crowd of loose tongues and gawkers, they’re just looking for that one person who will look beyond the surface.
He’s a treasure and she’s a sweet somewhat naive girl. There’s a bit of an age-gap, but their connection is instant and precious. Their courtship is humorous and a little heartbreaking with plenty of gossip following them around and a nice splash of steam.
I really enjoyed how the dynamic changed near the end for Edie and her father, and she truly is a lovely girl, but Frederick deserved more, a true romance instead of a fake engagement. After everything his half-brothers put him through, this man deserved more than just another scandal to find the love of his life. I would have liked for them to dance around each other a little less, and maybe see a bit more of her under his sisters-in-law’s wing and a dash more brotherly love.
It was a lovely read though, and so far I’ve really enjoyed The Chances series.
