One Day at the Bottom of the Sea is a colorful and fun-filled underwater adventure! The illustrations are bright, cute, and full of personality, perfectly matching the playful rhyming text that flows effortlessly. With lots of silly sounds and adorable sea creatures, kids will love diving into this imaginative story—especially the clever twist where a girl outsmarts a shark. A fun read-aloud that’s sure to make a splash!

Thanks to NetGalley for the free eARC. It's about a little girl who swims to the bottom of the deep blue sea and encounters a shark. He wants to eat her, but she gives him other options...all of which are terrible! Could she possibly be tricking him? The illustrations on this are beautiful and fun to look at - it might be just a hair too scary for preschool storytime? (I get that he doesn't actually EAT any of the creatures and learns his lesson, but there's something a little unsettling about him eating these cute little critters!)

I received an advance copy from Netgally. I loved the cover and title and thought my daughter would like the book. The first two pages she seemed on the fence but she ended up loving the story. She laughed at the various expressions of the shark and the fish/sea animals. Some of the rhythms weren’t good but overall I thought it was adorable and loved the illustrations. She gave the book 100 stars😂

The illustrations of this book are beautiful but I didn't really care for the underlying message of it. Whether intentional or not, there are just too many books out there to purchase something that isn't teaching something relevant to children even in a small, undercurrent of life skill/morals/ethics/whatever. Throwing friends under the bus to save our own skin isn't necessary something I want in my kids library.

I thought the illustrations were beautiful and delightful. I guess I never got past the idea the shark would know that all the animals were not tasty or desirable. Maybe silly and funny to some but I thought it was mean spirited and not in a clever way. I would not choose to read it to my 3-7 year olds because of the lack of empathy.. Being mean is a joke to some kids and parents so I am sure it would appeal.

I received an electronic ARC from Hippo Park through NetGalley.
A rhythmic story of a young girl who outwits a shark trying to eat her for dinner. She offers all sorts of underwater creatures instead. The shark eats each one but is surprised by how his dinner reacts each time. Readers will love the rhyme scheme and will predict what will happen each time the shark eats a different sea creature. Brightly colored illustrations capture the action and support the story. A delightful read aloud for families and classes.

This was so cute. The rhymes were fun and the colors were bright. I love the plot of a little girl trying to feed a shark and I think my kids would have loved this when they were little.
5 stars

This is a catchy one that would make for a great summer readaloud. It has sort of the sing-song quality of a "There Was an Old Lady" story, but the illustrations are superior. The colors are vibrant and the little girl character is likable. I don't love how things ended for the shark, but I can forgive that a bit because of the knitting turtle.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC. I will purchase for my library.

*I received a copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this opportunity*
My 4 and 7 year old enjoyed this book. The writing style reminded me of Dr. Seuss in that it was a bit of a fun tongue twister. The art was great, detailed and colorful.

Mother of two here! We all loved this adorable story of a girl helping a shark find his next meal. Each time the shark got injured, my kids laughed out loud! We love a book about the ocean and a rhyming children’s book is always a major plus for our family! The author, Daniel Bernstrom does a fantastic job, leading you through the different ocean creatures and how they defend themselves. The illustrations by Brandon James Scott are beautiful and so clever! This book was perfect for both my 8yo and 5yo, I would recommend it to another family!
Thank you NetGalley and Astra Books for Young Readers for this eARC!

Very entertaining and fun! The story is filled with rhythm and repetition and is very busy in words and illustrations. Great for reading together!
The illustrations by Brandon James Scott are imaginative, delightfully colorful, and FUN!
Well suited for reading WITH someone any age from 4 and up, including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!
I requested and received a temporary uncorrected eGalley on NetGalley Reader from Astra Publishing House | Hippo Park via NetGalley. Pub Date Apr 29, 2025

My kids really liked this book, but I found it a bit repetitive.
My four year olds really loved the illustrations.
My sever year old thought this book was easy to read.

My 6 year old loved the book and thought it was hilarious (I did not read it before I read to him). I thought it was kind of strange, but then again, many children’s books are strange. It would have been 5 stars except for trying to eat the girl at the ends. Still, it amuses my child so that’s a winner for me.

I loved this book so much! The illustrations were so vivid and cute. As a kindergarten teacher I know that my students would really enjoy this book. They would enjoy
the shark character and how he co yo yes to find food that is not right for him.
I loved the rhyming in the text.
Great story!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Astra Publishing house for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I received an arc of this book from NetGalley for an honest review. When a shark finds a girl at the bottom of the sea, he thinks he’s found a snack., but the girl has another idea. Great laugh out loud book for kids, excellent rhyming and repetitive text too.

This book was such a silly fun read! I giggled the whole entire time I read it. I will definitely highly recommend it and try to hand sell it when possible!

The illustrations are very colorful! Paired with a silly story that kids are sure to love. My ownly complaint about this title is that it sends the message that trickery is okay. However, I do enjoy that the story addresses adaptations animals have made to protect themselves from prey. Overall a good title, but I believe it could have been done better.

I absolutely love the illustrations in this book! They are vivid, detailed, and beautiful! I thought the rhythm and repetition in the text was entertaining. After being a preschool teacher and now second grade teacher, mother, and grandma, I know this book would be entertaining for young children. They would find it funny that the shark continued to find out that certain foods were not good for him. I think it could be a good book to teach predictions and to talk about the theme "good prevails." Overall, I think this is a wonderful story and I will be purchasing it to add to my classroom library!
Thank you Daniel Bernstrom and Astra Publishing House for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book. This review was written voluntary and all opinions are my own.

This story was absolutely adorable! My 2.5 year old got SO into it as we were reading! She was incredibly invested in the shark and kept exclaiming “oh no” whenever he tried something new and got injured. The pictures were vibrant and the story rhymed. I think it’s great for ages 2-5!

Thank you to NetGalley and Astra Publishing for the eARC!
This book is cute and colorful with lots of repetition that would be fun for young kids! The little girl was working hard to persuade the shark to eat anyone but her, which as an adult I found quite funny but I'm not sure it's a great lesson for children. She did ultimately escape the shark. Overall, I think this was cute and entertaining and would consider it for the upper end of the suggested 3-7 year range.
