The Twenty-Three (Promise Falls Trilogy Book #3) - Linwood Barclay

The Twenty-Three is yet another good murder thriller by Linwood Barclay. It is probably my least favorite of the three Promise Falls books, but it is still a good book and a quick read. Barclay is quite a prolific writer and he has many books under his belt.
The Twenty-Three takes off where Far From True left off. Book one in the trilogy is Broken
Promise. The Twenty-Three begins with many people getting sick, and many people dying. This part of the story is somewhat predictable. The source is traced down to the city water, thanks to Cal Weaver. Of course, the sleazy man running for Mayor takes advantage of the situation by passing out free bottled water from his water plant. Officer Barry Duckworth is running around like a madman trying to stop this catastrophe.
Meanwhile, there is a murder of a college student at the university even though it is summer school and few students remain on campus. This murder victim reminds Duckworth of two previous murders in Far From True. This part of the novel is much more interesting, but relies heavily that the reader has read Far From True already.
The reader can guess the rest. Although I enjoyed The Twenty-Three, and it was a very quick read, I believe that it is high time that Barclay left Promise Falls in the rear-view mirror. Many readers will enjoy this book more than I did, and it is worth finishing the trilogy. I would give this book a 2-star rating.
I would like to thank the author and Net Galley for this book. I apologize for taking so long, but I have been out of touch for about three years.

Round of applause for this final installment of such an awesome series. I really didn't want it to end, but it was such a thrill of a ride. I couldn't get enough of this book. Sadly, it had to end but what a highly amazing way to finish this. I would most definitely recommend this series to everyone.

The Twenty-Three is the third book in Linwood Barclay’s Promise Falls series, and it’s my favourite of the three. Although I’m a big fan of Linwood Barclay, I’m going to be honest and say this series has disappointed me. It’s not my favourite, but I remained curious to see how it played out.

With The Twenty-Three we have a three-point-five-star rating. At first, I thought it would be another book that I wasn’t crazy about. Once things started to move, I found myself hooked. Towards the end, however, I found myself disappointed again. I enjoyed it the most out of the three books, but I still wanted more.

A lot has happened across the series, and I expected big things from this one. There were many big reveals and some shocks, but for the biggest mysteries of the series I was disappointed. I had worked out too many of the elements early in the series, which left me disappointed when they were revealed in the manner they were. Add in the fact so many things were left open and never quite explained, and I’ll only be reading book four in the hope of seeing how certain elements come together.

All in all, The Twenty-Three was a great addition to the series, but it’s not enough to make this series a favourite.

This wasn't my favorite book of the Promise Falls Trilogy but it did provide lots of mystery and intrigue. People are being poisoned but women are also showing up dead, with some mysterious attachment to the number 23. As with each book in this trilogy, it followed it's own story, however, the ending left me wanting. I felt like there were a lot of loose ends that I now feel like I'll never figure out!

Linwood Barclay is a typical go-to for me, as I love his writing, and this book won't change that.

This was a bit of a manic start, then it just took forever to move forward. I'm glad there will be no more Promise Falls (end of trilogy). It wasn't my favorite Barclay work - easy listening, though. I do, however, look forward to more standalones. He's a comfort read/listen for me. Hooray for that! (3.5/5)

Hating to be somewhat contrary, but I have always found this author’s work to be a bit overrated… I either cannot finish or have to slog my way through, feeling frustrated. I will keep trying, maybe my mind will change… Cannot recommend this one though, I’m afraid. Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to read it.

Couldn't wait to read this third book in the promise falls trilogy, and I have to be honest, I didn't think it was as good as the first two. Too much coverage on the water poisoning and not enough of all the wonderful characters that are in the books, and it left some cliffhangers again, I think there is a follow up book, so it's not really a trilogy as I'm going to have to get the next book too! I would rate it 3 and a half stars, rounded up to four!

This is the third book in a great trilogy! There are enough references from the previous books, that you can read this book as a stand alone, but I feel like reading all of the books paints the full picture and keeps you more interested in it. At the start of this book, the town is all of sudden extremely sick with people dying and lots in the emergency room. The book continues on a thrilling roller coaster of a ride until the very end! I highly recommend this book and the entire trilogy!

I would like to thank Net Galley and Berkley Publishing Group for supplying me with a copy of this novel in exchange for a honest review.

This was apparently a trilogy, and I guess I somehow missed that. Not sure how, I guess I was just going by the amazing buzz, and did not check ahead of time. This could be read as a stand-alone, but I felt like there were tidbits that I was missing out on, that I wish I had known.

In this book, there is a water supply for the town that has been poisoned. Many people have died, and many more are made sick. Add to that a clear-cut murder with a smile carved into the body, and you have a recipe for disaster. Detectives hurry and race against a clock to find out who could do something like this, and if the two could possibly be related. This is a book that builds until you cannot put it down and find out the ending. Go ahead, prepare yourself. Do not make plans, you will be reading for a while.

I wish I had read the previous books. I know that I will be remedying that situation quickly. I look forward to more by this author.

Great book by Linwood Barclay, part of his three-book series. I enjoyed each book and could hardly wait to read what happened next in this suspenseful story. Recommended highly

Another great one set in Promise Falls! Cal Weaver and Barry Duckworth are again investigating cases when a large number of people are sent to the hospital with flu-like symptoms, and many are dying. At the same time, a college student has been murdered, and Duckworth recognizes the murderer's handiwork from two previous unsolved cases.

As bizarre incidents start to come together and make sense, Duckworth and Weaver realize that Promise Falls is up against an enemy that wishes to cause even more mayhem.

This one was a great thriller with characters I've come to love and a very riveting storyline, but it left quite a few threads hanging. I'm looking forward to the next book set in Promise Falls to see how it all plays out.

Read all 3 back to back! I would recommend you read the other 2 books first as the trilogy spans over a very short time (only a few days) and even though the author re caps you will get a much better understanding of both plot and character if you read the whole trilogy.
It's basically about a town called promise falls, the lives of some of it's inhabitants and how their lives intertwine with the major events that happen over a couple of weeks.
A good plot and enjoyable believable characters. As always another good read from Linwood Barclay

I'm a huge fan of the author, but not so much of trilogies and the like. It was ok, but not recommended. (Amazon reviewed)

There were Twenty-Two of them and her finance makes Twenty-three. Twenty-three that failed her. Twenty-three that were responsible for her murder. They were going to pay.

So the ride ends here and what a ride and I am glad I went on it. Three books in all. That set up the curse of Promise Falls. Three women murdered with the same MO. What connects each of these women? From the hanging of 23 squirrels to the tragedy of May 23rd and the death of many in the small town Promise Falls, when will it stop and can Detective Barry Duckworth connect the dots.

With many characters within this small town, all with their own secrets and guilt, the plot keeps you at the end of your seat. Guessing and guessing again. Did not see it coming but liked how all was connected. The only disappointment was David and Sam. What happened? With Sam's ex on her trail, what happened at the campsite? It does end abruptly with no tied bows, but real life usually is that way.

If there is another, I am in. If not, I guess I will leave it to my own crazy imagination.

A Special Thank You to Berkley Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
