Description
Everything has been leading to this.
It’s the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 23rd, and the small town of Promise Falls, New York, has found itself in the midst of a full-blown catastrophe. Hundreds of people are going to the hospital with similar flu-like symptoms—and dozens have died. Investigators quickly zero in on the water supply. But the question for many, including private investigator Cal Weaver, remains: Who would benefit from a mass poisoning of this town?
Meanwhile, Detective Barry Duckworth is faced with another problem. A college student has been murdered, and he’s seen the killer’s handiwork before—in the unsolved homicides of two other women in town. Suddenly, all the strange things that have happened in the last month start to add up…
Bloody mannequins found in car “23” of an abandoned Ferris wheel…a fiery, out-of-control bus with “23” on the back, that same number on the hoodie of a man accused of assault…
The motive for harming the people of Promise Falls points to the number 23—and working out why will bring Duckworth closer to death than he’s ever been before…

Having read Linwood Barclay before I was so excited to read Promise Falls, and it didn't disappoint!
From the start I was immediately drawn in to the frenetic pace as the town was in the midst of a disaster. This made many of the residents become violently ill, resulting in many deaths! I could almost feel how increasingly frantic the characters became as the drama unfolded.
Intertwined with this, there was a killing which became clear was the result of a dormant killer who had struck Promise Falls residents before.
The two fold investigation had me hooked, although at times I was confused by the changing narrating characters who made references to previous characters and incidents which had happened in the previous 2 books of the trilogy. This was not Barclays failings as an author, but mine as I haven't read the other two, but I will be visiting these books as I want to know now what had gone on before!
So in conclusion, fans of Linwood Barclay and those new readers won't be disappointed!
Promise Falls is a place I'd like to visit, but only in the pages of a Linwood Barclay book. Barclay's characters are spell binding, the dialogue is so natural, and the plot is twisted and so fast-paced that it's very hard to put this suspenseful piece of fiction down! How can one author write such consistently great stories? My fingers are crossed that he's hard at work on the next best-seller!
