The Cabin is a doozy of a suspense/thriller. I read a lot of murder mystery books and pride myself in typically being able to sniff out the real killer, and maybe even a smidge of motive. That wasn't the case here; I was constantly taken for loops and never really got my bearings. For this genre, I feel like that's a win. I don't know that the entire premise of finding teens dead in a remote cabin is all that unique (it feels like I've definitely seen that in a movie or 3), but it's always fun to figure out whodunnit.

I have to be up front -- I didn't like the end, but stylistically, I don't like cliffhangers or unresolved endings. Aside from that, I felt the book was definitely hard to put down. I just needed to know who the killer was and why. I didn't quite trust anyone, and questioned whether Mackenzie was an unreliable narrator often. This actually made reading more fun because as fast as I was reading, I was overanalyzing every word, action, and imagined inflection.

A fan of Preston's The Cellar, I love reading stories that generated a fandom on WattPad first. A great intro for teens into the psychological thriller genre.

I enjoyed this book. But it was a bit young, and there were some parts where there was a random time jump, with really no indication that it had happened on the page, like a paragraph break or anything. And that was a little confusing. Plus I wish there were a few more transition scenes, because suddenly the characters would be in a random place, and it just caused me more confusion.

I really felt for Mackenzie, because first two of her friends die in an accident, and now, one and her boyfriend, have been murdered, and her remaining friends (and her love interest) are the main suspects in their murder. So that's difficult, even coming to the conclusion that one of her friends is a murderer. But as the book goes on, she does learn of secrets from all of her friends, giving all of them potential motives, which upped the stakes.

I know I'm putting on complaint after complaint. But I do read so much, that only putting what I enjoyed makes it harder to write reviews, I run out of things to say. On that note, I found Mackenzie and Blake's relationship to be on the middle end of YA, they act their ages and immature, and make some not so great decisions, and that's pretty true to life. It's just not quite as entertaining to read, though.

That ending, I'm conflicted. On one hand, I liked how much of a twist it was. On the other, it was a bit disjointed, and short, and it didn't quite make sense as a reveal, the reasoning. Plus that last, last line, it's not the right thing to do, they were panicking, and I wish that they'd do differently.

I did enjoy this book, but it's not one that I feel like I need to reread.

It wasn't my favorite YA mystery, but it definitely kept me engaged. The ending was done very well and overall I did have a great time reading it, even if it was a bit boring at times. I'd recommend it to the younger side of YA that doesn't want something too scary but still wants some thrills.

Very interesting read!!

This book was what I had been looking for. Something different from my normal.

I loved that this was a story mixed with romance, suspense and amazing twists. I was guessing all the way through. I never would’ve guessed that ending.

The only reason I couldn’t give it 5 stars was because of the ending. She kind of left things hanging and I don’t like that. I wanted a story that was complete with no unanswered questions. I think this book needed an epilogue so the reader isn’t left wondering.

But overall it was definitely worth the read.

I enjoyed this book. Perfect YA read with a compelling main character. The plot had its twists and turns, enough to try and guess “The Who done it” without success.

I was excited to read this one after reading the blurb but I was quickly disappointed with all the drinking, drugs and sex. I could do without all of that and I am not sure why author's think that a YA has to include that. I have a teen that does not participate in that stuff thanks goodness, and I am sure there are lots of others that don't either. I am sure it makes for a great story line but I could just do without it.

Mackenzie and her friends go away for the weekend and two of the friends end up getting killed in a locked door house. Caught my attention for sure! Mackenzie ends up taking it upon herself to try and find out who the murdered is. Along the way Mackenzie ends up having some steamy times with one of the brothers of one of the murdered friends. How they could think about all that when trying to sold a murder was crazy.

It did take me awhile to figure out who the actual murderer was so that was good and kept me going to the end of the story. This was a good idea for a story, I just could have done without the drinking and drugs. I would encourage you to give this one a chance for yourself though as this is just my opinion.

I want to say thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for letting me read the book in exchange for an honest review.

Mystery and thrillers are hard for me to enjoy fully because they typically are easy for me to predict. I might just have crazy high expectations for novels in mystery, thriller, and horror genre, but The Cabin was no exception. I really enjoyed Natasha Preston's writing style, and I want to read more of her novels. However, besides the novel not meeting my expectations I felt it lacked character development. Mackenzie is an okay main character, but she doesn't seem to grow from start to finish. Another issue I see within in these genres is the main character always has to put their selves in danger. When Mackenzie started unravel the secrets it started to blur for me, and just made the story confusing. Despite the book moving at a fast pace, everything that was happening seemed to be unbelievable or not realistic. I wish I could add to my review, but The Cabin didn't stick out the way I wanted it too. Overall rating is 2.5 stars.

Sadly I DNF'ed at 62%. I honestly just wasn't interested after a while. The plot was great at first but it just got so slow and it felt like nothing was happening. I would go months without reading and when I tried I would get bored and stop after a few pages. I don't think I'll be picking this book up in the future. I do want to try her other books and see how I like them but we shall see when that happens. This had so much potential and sadly it fell flat for me.
