This is the first book in the Kissed by the Bay series and also the first I’ve read by this author. When I read the blurb I was intrigued by the whole confiding in a stranger aspect because one of my favorite chick lit romances is Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella, and I was expecting something similar.
Unfortunately this book just wasn’t for me. It suffers from every clichéd trope imaginable and I despise the whole love at first sight trope. The main character, Wendy has a lot of issues, which while understandable lack depth and instead of feeling bad for her, I was put off by her whining and woe is me attitude. Wendy sounded more like a spoilt teenager than anything else. Max’s whole character seemed hollow and honestly his whole habit of doing nice things for her behind her back sort of came off as creepy-ish. The dialogue was over simplistic and without the thought process you’d expect from an adult. Then there’s the whole telling instead of showing aspect that this story suffered from. The one scene I did enjoy is when Wendy and her brother Brian finally make peace with each other.
Disliked this book, hoping the next one is better because I have three in the series.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
