Got a little more than a third of the way through this book. Just never could seem to finish it though. As is common with anthologies, some works were better than others. Just not my thing though, I guess.
I feel very middle of the road about this. It is a good anthology, but it isn't overwhelming. In fact, it was a bit underwhelming. Maybe I needed to read this with a less critical eye and more from a YA lens (as this is a YA book) - but it just didn't deliver the punch I was looking for. I think this is one my students might enjoy, however. I have a few in mind that I know would like to read something like this and enjoy ghost stories and will find this anthology as easy read and something to satisfy their "scary stuff" requests.
I'm trying....I'm STILL trying to find a good short story collection in this genre and I truly believed, that this book will be one of the better ones. However my hopes and dreams were crashed after first few stories.
Honestly, if you asked me, to tell at least one of the bunch of stories, that are in this book, I couldn't. Not because I don't want to, but because they were so boring, that I thought, I will rip my eyes with my own fingers, and in the end I couldn't remember any of them. Granted, this book can help you to fall asleep, if you have insomnia.
I don't understand, why I tortures my self and read all of it. Maybe I was secretly hoping to find at least one or two decent stories, that at least will sent chills down my spine. However they were far from scary and, actually, more absurd and bizarre. Some of them were like stream of consciousness or like a conversation between to people, that you try to understand, but can't, because you didn't hear the beginning of it.
This book is a big let down. I recommend to skip it.
"Cast No Shadows" is a very entertaining anthology of YA ghost stories. Most of the stories are short and well written. They range from the traditional, historical haunted house tropes to the new urban myth genre.
The stories are all appealing in their own way. Some sentimental, some scary, all a lot of fun to read. A great read for someone interested in a good ghost story!
I got this book from NetGalley and it was a lot longer than I thought it would be. Sometimes I would read 4 or 5 stories and only get through 3% more of the book. The stories varied in length, but they were all about ghosts. They took place in haunted houses, cemeteries, back roads and other locations in New York, with a few taking place elsewhere. It took me a few months to get through this one.
To me, this one was just ok. The stories were alright, but none of them were particularly memorable and I got bored a few times waiting for something to happen. There wasn't any blood, guts or scary moments, even in ones that should've been scary. I won't be reading anything else from Curiosity Quills.
