An endearing chapter book about the adventure that came to Odd and Kite. Kite is a traveling circus performer and he is good friends with Audrey, Odd, and her mother. Odd has been aching for an adventure of her own for months. When Odd sees the floating island above town she is determined to explore it. Kite quickly becomes eager to join her in her endeavors. The only problem is that most of Odd's plans end up going awry. With language that would charm almost any reader K.J Quint weaves a story that will make you want to run out your door immediately and find your own magical creature or at least mosey through the forest until you find an adventure.
My favourite part of Crash Landers was absolutely the main two characters: who have bright, distinct personalities and a firm bond with each other that looks to be the heart of this series. Odd and Kite have a sweet, fun and interesting friendship. They have known each other prior to the book, but the reader gets to see their dynamic shift and develop as they become closer through the events they face together. The sincerity and care the characters have for each other despite their conflicts was expressed very well in this installment, and the two of them were absolutely the highlight of the reading experience for me.
'"Then we're both in brand new territory. It makes for a better adventure," Odd said happily.'
Aside from the characters, the story clearly has more depth it has yet to reach, but the first book kept up a nice and consistent pace that was both pleasant and straightforward to read. While the writing didn't stick out to me at first, I enjoyed it more and more as I progressed through the book; soon enough it had me reading with rapt attention until the end. The prose fits the length and pacing well and the whole thing is full of detail that builds up wonderful imagery and atmosphere along Odd and Kit's adventure.
Something else I really liked was the general format of the book, with the lovely decorative chapter headings and dividers that added a touch more tone and mood to the story around them. All in all, this was a great beginning to a series that feels full of promise. I can't wait to read more!
This was a fun adventure story aimed at grades 3-6. It has good characters, an interesting story and a great adventure. It will be enjoyed equally by girls and boys who like magic, strange creatures and other worlds. This is Part 1 and looks to be a great new series
Audrey is a little different.
Some might say Odd. Hence, the nickname. She dreams of adventure away from her poor little town, and she drags her best friend, Kite, into her imagination. One day as they are going about their normal routine, they feel a huge wind and a giant shadow falls over the entire town. In the sky is a floating cloud of dirt! Of course, Odd sees this as her chance, and finds the highest point in the entire town, so that she can jump onto the floating island and make the (*ahem* literal) leap to an adventure!
This story was quite cute.
It was most definitely middle grade, as it was told in a very young and simplistic voice, and the little details weren't stressed as much. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the writing style, and it carried me through the book quite quickly.
The characters were sweet, although a little unbelievable.
I liked Odd's big dreams and Kite's struggle to keep up with her, but I didn't find that it was very realistic. Odd's mother just let the two of them roam around freely all day, getting up to all kinds of trouble, and I don't think they went to school either. However, as it is fantasy, I'm willing to let that slide.
It really was only part one.
The cover has the book labeled as An Odd Adventure Part One: Crash Landers. At just over 100 pages, the book was extremely short, even for middle grade. It didn't really have a clear ending, and I got much more of a "to be continued" feeling than anything. This is okay, but I felt it was somewhat unnecessary, and it probably would've been better published along with the next book as one.
Overall, it was short and quick, but still sweet and enjoyable.
It was just very cute! I don't know how else to describe it. If you like Middle Grade Fantasy and you're okay with a To Be Continued type of ending, I say go for it!
A captivating and original world with great characters! Kite and Odds friendship is adorable and their adventures are incredibly entertaining, especially when things go wrong! I look forward to seeing more of their adventures!
An exciting middle grade book. It's cute and I loved the reading. I liked the way the author put the scenarios and the world creation. The plot was interesting and more than that the adventure got me really involved and wishing to be Odd and Kite friends. I want to read the next book, I'm still dreaming about the last chapter.
