Description

Fun fact: An eighteen-year-old boy having racy pictures of his seventeen-year-old girlfriend is against the law. Jacob Brimm is handed the option to leave their small town or face legal action from his girlfriend’s mother. He vows to return for Violet, but hearing she married and started a family quickly after his departure, Jacob gives up on their happily ever after. Only when work brings him home twelve years later does he return, bitterness weighing heavily in his heart.

Violet Gothel doesn’t know why Jacob is angry. He abandoned her. He left her pregnant with their twins to raise alone and he didn’t answer her calls. When Jacob sees his son, the manipulation tactics used by Violet’s mother begin to untangle. While they put the pieces together, Violet can’t help but fear what else her mother has done with her carefully built tower of lies.

LET DOWN YOUR HEART is a retelling of the classic Rapunzel fairy tale set in a small town contemporary romance atmosphere.

There are many versions of the fairy tales for adults out there in the book world but Let Down Your Heart by Keri Ford is unique. This story caught my attention from the beginning since it takes place in North Carolina, the place of my birth. Then I met Violet and Jacob and before I knew it time has flown by because I was so engrossed in their story.

The community working together with its small-town atmosphere made the perfect backdrop for this retelling of the fairy tales. It also led naturally into the former high school sweethearts running into each other. It also showed the depths of meanness a “mother’ can possess. I couldn’t feel any sympathy for her even after all the truth came to light. Now, Jacob and Violet are complex characters who have their virtues and their vices but are easy to become endearing. The children are simply adorable; no wonder Jacob was so angry.

This modern version of Rapunzel is an exceptional second chance read while at the same time staying true to the original version. There are twists and turns that I did not see coming, but looking back they fit perfectly together. I look forward to many more in this incredible series. I can recommend this book to not just to fairy tale lovers but to contemporary romance readers everywhere.
