From bestselling authors, we have samples of new work from Louise Erdrich and nonfiction from novelist Amy Tan in her memoir Where the Past Begins, as well as fiction from environmentalist Bill McKibben (Radio Free Vermont).

A rich selection of highly anticipated follow-up books is inside, too: From author of Ten Thousand Saints Eleanor Henderson comes her new novel The Twelve-Mile Straight; from the author of the quirky Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore Robin Sloan there is Sourdough; and Celeste Ng, author of Everything I Never Told You returns with Little Fires Everywhere.

This edition is packed with 16 debut novels, including the highly-touted Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo and the big thriller The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn, along with first novels by Sarah Bailey, Phil Harrison, Ali Land, K Arsenault Rivera, Adrian Walker, Cherise Wolas and more.

In nonfiction, Bryan Mealer's The Kings of Big Spring recounts his family's complicated history with the Texas oil industry; Jaime Lowe's Mental: Lithium, Love, and Losing My Mind is both memoir and an investigation into the history, uses, and controversies behind lithium; Heather Harpham's Happiness looks at an estranged couple drawn back together by their daughter's unexpected illness; and actor Gabrielle Union's collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman suggests that We're Going to Need More Wine.

Regular readers know that each Buzz Books collection is filled with early looks at titles that will go on to top the bestseller lists and critics' "best of the year" lists. And our comprehensive seasonal preview starts the book off with a curated overview of hundreds of notable books on the way later this year.

While I love the monthly Buzz Books, these seasonal glimpses into what is coming out are my favorite. Some were already on my radar (Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, and Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart), but some I hadn't heard of and am now eagerly anticipating (when can I request The Inner Lives of Animals?!?!?). It is clear that there is a lot to look forward to after summer!

Thanks again, Buzz Books, for introducing me to a whole new batch of books to covet until pub day! FUTURE HOME OF THE LIVING GOD by Louise Erdrich; THE IMMORTALISTS by Chloe Benjamin; I'LL STAY by Karen Day; THE CHILD FINDER by Rene Denfeld; THE TWELVE-MILE STRAIGHT by Eleanor Henderson; THE ROAD TO BITTERSWEET by Donna Everhart; HANNA WHO FELL FROM THE SKY by Christopher Meades - they all look so good!

Wow, wow, wow......there are so many awesome books coming out in fall and winter!! I ran to this Buzz Books as soon as I saw it was available!! I love these Buzz Books previews! I discovered two books that I want to read, and realized that one book I had thought might be good was not one I wanted. Also, it gives me a chance to sample author's that I might never have read. Thanks Publishers Lunch, and Netgalley!

Great compilation of books that build interest and excitement in readers about what's coming up. It definitely reaches its goal of creating "buzz". I like that it's divided into the 3 categories and has excerpts of each book. I read excerpts that I wouldn't otherwise have an interest in.

My favorites are Sourdough and Little Fires Everywhere. I'm definitely putting these on my wish list.

Buzz Books 2017: Fall/Winter

35138828

Without Buzz Books, I wouldn’t know of all these glorious titles heading our way! Get your lists fired up friends!

What a list of forthcoming books. How I didn’t know Amy Tan has a memoir out on October 17, 2017 is beyond me. I am highly anticipating it!

34043618.jpg

Janet Fitch, author of White Oleander has a new novel coming out, and I say Finally! I have been waiting and am excited. The Revolution of Marina M.

34523120

For fans of Isabel Allende, a moving love story will be out October 31, 2017 In The Midst Of Winter

34623118

It’s an exciting fall/winter with the best authors! Louise Erdich’s novel Future Home of the Living God will be out November 14, 2017

34217599.jpg

The Ninth Hour by Alice McDermott is forthcoming September 19, 2017

33931059.jpg

Of course Alice Hoffman’s prequel to her beloved Practical Magic is out October and I have already read the arc, giving it full stars. I felt down coming towards the ending, I didn’t want to leave The Owens’ family, I had so missed the magic! A picture of the cover can’t do it justice, it is one of the prettiest I’ve seen in years. Much cover love. I will post my review closer to the release date per the publisher’s request.

34037113

Chloe Benjamin, the author of The Anatomy of Dreams has The Immortalists out January 9, 2018- I have been waiting somewhat impatiently for approval for this arc. The few people who’ve read it raved about the forthcoming story of siblings that are privy, early on, to the date of their deaths. Intriguing.

cover110765-medium.png

Jennifer Egan’s Manhatten Beach takes the reader to Brooklyn during the Great Depression. I am currently reviewing an arc and it’s moving, beautifully atmospheric and I know it will be enjoyed by many. It is certainly haunting and another novel I won’t be posting for awhile. I feel like a hoarder when I am able to get my book wormy hands on such wonderful fiction before others, because damn if I don’t love to gush about the good books and share the love.

34467031.jpg

I adored The Education of Dixie Dupree by Donna Everhart, and I am so excited that she has written a new novel that sounds just as beautiful. The Road to Bittersweet will be out December 26, 2017. This is another arc on my highly anticipating list. With sweet covers and lovely titles it always seems as though the reading would be light, but not a chance. Don’t be fooled into thinking pretty covers mean breezy reads.

34853146.jpg

My curiosity is piqued about The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore by Kim Fu. Young girls at a sleep-away camp stranded without adults, help, guidance and what happens in the years that follow?

33413874.jpg

Pulitzer Prize winning author Jeffrey Eugenides, yes I am a fan, will have his first collection of short fiction coming out October 3, 2017. Those few people who already read it- I’m so jealous! Though this book is towards the end of my list, he needs no promoting from me, so I think I’m forgiven.

33844793.jpg

One that is sure to cause some discomfort, and yet I know so many of my fellow readers have already added to their list is All We Shall Know by Donal Ryan. ‘Martin Toppy is the son of a famous Traveller and the father of my unborn child. He’s seventeen, I’m thirty-three. I was his teacher. I’d have killed myself by now if I was brave enough. I don’t think it would hurt the baby. His little heart would stop with mine. He wouldn’t feel himself leaving one world of darkness for another, his spirit untangling itself from me.’ That shared from Goodreads, oh my!

29752909.jpg

Is it just me or are covers getting so much more beautiful. Ode to physical books, because regardless of the ebooks I get, I somehow always hunt down physical copies. I can’t resist. I may die buried in a pile of dusty books one day, but I will have a smile on my face.

It’s going to be a great year in reading. I love the sneaky peaks Buzz Books gives us!

I love books. I love book reviews. I browsed (devoured) this book about books and made a list (another book list of many!) of which books caught my eye. It was great that it was broken up into sections, so I could fast-forward through the categories that didn't appeal to me. Thank you for a wonderful resource and I look forward to happy hours reading!

I love these seasonal samplers and the opportunity that they give me to dip into works by favorite authors like Louise Erdrich (Future Home of the Living God) and Amy Tan (Where the Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir) and to be introduced to new-to-me writers like Donna Everhart (The Road to Bittersweet); Sarah Miller (Caroline); Bradford Morrow (The Prague Sonata); Celeste Ng (Little Fires Everywhere); and Ayobami Adelbayo (Stay With Me). I also appreciate being able to request NetGalley versions of some of the books included here. I'm looking forward to reading and helping to build buzz for these titles!

Buzz books is a great way to sample upcoming books and sample what you may be interested. 16 Debut Novels, among dozens of others from authors who already one or more books released. Besides telling the plot of upcoming fiction, I appreciate the preview samplers so I can test whether the writing fits me or not before plunging in. Divided into Part One: Fiction; Part Two: Debut Fiction; Part Three: Non-Fiction. They also have a YA Line that is released each year. Both of these are free Read Now Features on Netgalley.

I'm really excited about these Fall 2017 selections! I was lucky enough to get to read and review a galley of Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere, and I think it's an exceptionally good novel. I loved it. I also love two of the nonfiction books: The Kings of Big Springs and Life Detonated. I couldn't step away while reading those excerpts, and I look forward to reading the complete version of each book. They are both well written and compelling in my view as a reader and writing professor. Thanks so much for sharing! I love the Buzz Books excerpts.

This has to be one of the best books I have ever been lucky enough to find! For a cable cutter who is a slightly obsessive reader, this was like receiving the most perfect gift ever. I now have a list of over 20 books that I might never have known existed if not for Buzz Books and I cannot wait to go past the 'teaser' chapters and find out what happens next to all the amazing characters I have met. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to find new authors and new books.

I just love Buzz Books and really look forward to the big seasonal volumes like this one for Fall/Winter. So much incredible information at our fingertips. Usually I don't know where to begin, but now I started highlighting with my own little color coding system within each genre indicating which ones are my first picks then their publish date. The excerpts that are in the book are already starred * for you, (so cool) so just use your color to match with that star. Works for me. Give it a try or develop your own! Just start reading; so much to look forward to, I can't name them all! Thanks Publishers Lunch, Buzz Books, and Netgalley.

I love these compilations from Buzz Books. It is a very simple premise but it is brilliantly executed. Instead of just publishing a list of soon to be published books, you get the first chapter or an excerpt. It is a sort of bundled Kindle sample. But the clever part is that there are old favourites to draw you in, like JT Ellison and Celeste Ng, but there are also debut authors that you might not otherwise discover and then there's non-fiction that you wouldn't find on your own. Some excellent stuff here and I am particularly looking forward to reading Amy Tan's memoir having enjoyed the teaser.

Buzz Books: Fall/Winter 2017
By Publishers Lunch from NetGalley
Exclusive excepts from 40 books yet to be published

These Buzz Books are such a wonderful teaser to Books you want to add to your TBR bookshelf. Just enough of an excerpt to grab your interest.

Here are some of the books I found interesting. The books are arranged under their genre as they are in the book.

Biographies/Memoirs
We Are Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union (November 2017). A touching look into the life of a person who will achieve fame and success. It's a reminder that not all celebrities are born but raised with determination to overcome the hardest obstacles.

Where the Past Begins by Amy Tan
The author provides a thoughtful reflection on her life as a writer. Originally focusing on her artistic talents, she realizes it does not provide "an unexpected reckoning of my soul." She describes her Chinese American heritage and its influence on her writing. An eloquently written memoir by a memorable author.

Fiction
The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin
(2018)
Varya is the oldest of the four Gold children in 1969. She is 13 years old when she takes her siblings to seek advice from a "rishika" or seer about their future.

Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich
(November 2017)
The author of The Round House, writes another touching novel about the struggles of a young pregnant woman. Four months pregnant, Cedar Hawk Songmaker is desperate to find her birth mother, Mary Potts, an Ojibwe American Indian living on the reservation.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
(September 2017)
The Richardson family watch as firefighters extinguish the fire engulfing their home. Everyone was accounted for except for the youngest daughter, Izzy. Who was responsible for setting the fires? Was it Izzy who was rumored to be a "lunatic" or were they overlooking the timely departure of renters who left that morning?

Another wonderful installment in the Buzz Books series from Publishers Lunch. I rely on these editions to guide me to up-and-coming authors and new books from some of my favorite authors and add to my reading list this fall. This Fall/Winter 2017 edition offered a great selection of titles and excerpts which stood me in good stead at BookExpo. I was able to obtain advance copies of many of my favorite selections from this book.

You don't have to be in the publishing industry to access this book — it's available as a free e-book on Amazon, and can help any avid reader learn more about high profile books coming out this fall.

Based on the excerpts in Buzz Books, these were the standout books I’m most excited about reading:

* The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin
* Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich
* Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
* Caroline by Sarah Miller
* Sourdough by Robin Sloan
* The World of Tomorrow by Brendan Matthews
* The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn
* The Dark Lake by Sarah Bailey
* The Child Finder by Rene Denfield
* Radio Free Vermont by Bill McKibben
* Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak
* Happiness by Heather Harpham
* The Spectrum of Hope by Gayatri Devi

Want to know what’s making a noise in publishing? Check out the Buzz Books editions when they’re released. Heaps of excerpts from fiction by established authors to debut fiction as well as plenty of non-fiction selections.

Each piece has an introduction with a summary or publisher’s blurb with a basic description of the book followed by the excerpt itself, which can be anything from a few pages to a lengthy chapter. The better you’re hooked, the more likely you are to look for it, of course! Some have a direct link to NetGalley to which you can connect from a Kindle to make a request, although I find it a lot easier to do online.

There were several books that appealed to me, and many have been reviewed on Goodreads already. I'll leave you to find the blurbs there. Here are a couple by established authors.

I’m looking forward to The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld. We watch Naomi begin her search.

” Naomi always began by learning to love the world where the child went missing. It was like carefully unraveling a twisted ball of yarn . . . each missing place was a portal.”

And I can see why Celeste Ng's new Little Fires Everywhere is getting a lot of attention.

Another that looks like fun is Robin Sloan’s Sourdough. Sloan wrote one that many readers loved, including me, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, (which I reviewed https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1544737663).

Then there is the debut fiction offering. Many looked good – here are a few I will look for. Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo has already been nominated for the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction in the UK, so I’ve added that to my reading list.

A.F. Brady's book The Blind looks intriguing. A psychologist who treats patients nobody else will deal with comes up against a mysterious case, and it looks like gets pretty scary. Gary, who is assigned as her partner, reckons he will get this uncooperative, non-talking, ex-con mental patient to confide in him because he's going to "talk to him like a man." Says it's not rocket science, but Sam wouldn't understand because she's not a man. Looks to me like Gary's riding for a fall.

And I liked the introductory chapter to The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn, which begins with a woman watching across the street as a wife welcomes a contractor into her house and into her bedroom after her husband leaves for work. The woman pervs on them a while and then sees the husband return home for something he’s forgotten. But like a good nature photographer (or journalist?) she can’t interfere, just observe. She goes back and forth as the deceitful couple disrobe, piece by piece, and as the husband gets closer to the front door, step by step . . .

And I can’t resist Bill McKibben's debut novel Radio Free Vermont: A Fable of Resistance. Bill is widely known for his non-fiction environmental books and articles and his founding of 350.org. I think his first fiction is going to fit in nicely and may attract a whole new audience.

The opening chapter has local activists arranging the detour of a Coors beer truck so they can temporarily hijack it and swap the “imported” beer with local brews to promote local goods. Mind you, they’ve made the driver a lovely picnic lunch to keep him happy while they let down his tires so he can’t drive off while they empty all the Coors bottles.

”’Hey lady This is going to take forever—I’ve got twelve hundred cartons in the truck. Why don’t you just toss them over the side and let me go?’

The woman looked up at him from above a draining carton of beer. 'This is Vermont. We RECYCLE.’

Then they pump up his tires again and off he goes to New York with the microbrew on board!

Sounds like my kind of book.

There are many non-fiction selections, and one that could be interesting is Amy Tan’s Where the Past Begins: A Writer's Memoir. I’ve enjoyed some of her novels, and I’m aware that her Chinese heritage has played a big part in her upbringing and life.

She begins by saying she was recognised as an especially talented artist in her youth. Although very accurate at portraying likenesses and drawing things, she had no imagination, according to her art teacher! But she was so good, a piano teacher offered her free piano lessons in exchange for teaching his daughter to draw.

She was insulted (who wouldn’t be?) by her art teacher’s criticism, but when she discovered her talent for writing, the light dawned. She certainly does have imagination, and it shows in her writing in ways she couldn’t express herself with her drawing. It promises to be an interesting book.

Thanks to NetGalley and Publishers Lunch for the preview copy from which I’ve quoted. It’s still available on NetGalley as I write this. [My Goodreads review includes the current covers of the books I've mentioned.]
The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Sourdough by Robin Sloan
Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo
The Blind by A.F. Brady

The 2017 Fall/Winter edition of Buzz Books is my favorite one yet. I found a ton of new authors to check out and the excerpts were phenomenal. There are some truly talented writers out there waiting to be discovered and Buzz Books helps you do just that. There are so many books out there in the world but I guarantee you will find at least one that you want to devour in any edition of Buzz Books.

This is a great collection of excerpts of upcoming, highly-anticipated books for Fall/Winter 2017.

The book contains an introduction followed by a section with a list of fiction books noted "The Notables", "Highly Anticipated", "Emerging Voices", "Debut Fiction", "Commercial Fiction", and Nonfiction. After that there is a list of BuzzBooks authors that appeared at BookExpo followed by book excepts by publishers. Each book excerpt contains the book cover, summary of the book, the excerpt, and information about the author.

I particularly enjoyed the excerpts for THE DARK LAKE by Sarah Bailey and ROSIE COLORED GLASSES by Brianna Wolfson.

Overall, a great list of buzzing titles for Fall/Winter 2017.

This is a great tool for booksellers! As it's virtually impossible to read everything, It can be overwhelming to make choices. This guide helped me narrow down my search, as well as familiarize myself with upcoming releases I might not be able to read in their entirety but that I'd like to be able to recommend.

What a great idea. Buzz Books 2017 had some interesting novels, and I found several great books to add to my TBR!

With 40 excerpts that include established authors like Louise Erdrich and Celeste Ng, debut authors and non-fiction, I am looking forward to finding my next fall favorites!

Really like getting extracts of new books - often you can already decide after the first chapter if it is a book you are likely to like or not.

Great way to learn what books are on the horizon and to plan your reading list accordingly.

Find time to sit down and read the 40 excerpts of fiction and nonfiction. I was excited about the book on Norway as it is not something I've seen. In fact this title is first of a trilogy! I also was fascinated about the nonfiction book titled Radium women. It's about an expose of working women who were posioned by radium paint in the 1920s. I could go on about each book but will leave it for you to discover titles you will want to read!

This is my favorite book that tells me about books that I might not know about. My reading list keeps getting longer as does my pile of books I have to read! I just can't stop reading Buzz books -- it even helps me to recommend books to friends and the book club I belong to.

What a great idea this is. Not all books I wanted to try were available for my country but still a great quick way to find something new to try.

I love getting to preview a lot of upcoming titles -- both to talk about them with library patrons and to decide what I want to read myself! As a librarian, I don't have time to read every new release but patrons like to talk to me about them anyway, and these samplers make me more conversant on a number of different titles.

Wow! If this Buzz Books edition is any indication, there are a number of GREAT books coming this fall/winter! There’s bound to be something for everyone within these pages. I know my bookshelf is going to be sagging with all of the new editions I'm planning on adding. Of the 40 excerpts (yes, you read that right . . . 40!), these 12 caught my eye:

Fiction:
I’ll Stay - Karen Day
The Child Finder - Rene Denfeld
Lie to Me - J.T. Ellison
Hannah We Fell From The Sky - Christopher Meades
Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng
The Black Painting - Neil Olson

Debut Fiction:
The Dark Lake - Sarah Bailey
Second Acts - Teri Emory
The Woman in the Window - A.J. Finn: I CAN’T WAIT! This might just be one of my most anticipated reads of the Fall!!
The Girlfriend - Michelle Frances
Good Me, Bad Me - by Ali Land

Nonfiction
Life Detonated - Kathleen Murray Moran

Buzz Books provides a great resource for new titles each season. This compilation wasn't as enticing to me as previous offerings, but there are still some titles worth reading.

Books to check out:

THE FUTURE HOME OF THE LIVING GOD by Louise Erdrich
There are a lot of apocalyptic novels out there, but what about a premise where evolution starts to move backwards. That's right. No meteor or blackout, but think of the ramifications of a human race that becomes less able to invent, create, write, problem-solve. Scared? I woke up with nightmares after reading the excerpt.

HANNA WHO FELL FROM THE SKY by Christopher Meades
On a commune amongst 14 brothers and sisters, four mothers and the watchful eye of a drunken father, Hanna is about to turn 18. She will be betrothed to a man twice her age, his fifth wife. Can Hanna escape the only world she knows? Does she want to?

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE by Celeste Ng
After Celeste Ng's brilliant debut EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU, I'd read her interpretation of the phone book if she released it. This one is definitely on my to-read list.

SOURDOUGH by Robin Sloan
Author of MR. PENUMBRA'S 24 BOOK STORE does it again with a quirky tale of a San Francisco engineer turned baker who discovers the dark side of the farmers market circuit.

Books worth investigating further:

SEVEN DAYS OF US by Francesca Hornak
MENTAL: LITHIUM, LOVE, AND LOSING MY MIND by Jaime Lowe
THE INNER LIFE OF ANIMALS by Peter Wohlleben

This is an excellent resource. I like the different indices available so that one can look up a book according to author or publisher. Using this handy collection I found two books that I wanted to read, and I requested them from Net Galley and received them. There are three more here that I haven't seen offered yet, but have written them down and will continue to watch.
If I could, I would love to see it organized according to who will be allowed access--i.e., which books can a blogger stand a chance of reading in advance--but this is a reach, and may be outside the scope of what Buzz Books seeks to achieve.
Thank you for the advance copy.

Great previews for future titles. I love finding out what books to look out for!

This was my first Buzz Book and I'm really glad I read it. I ended up adding quite a few books to my TBR shelf.

I know quite early if a book will be a good fit for me. Having a summary and approximately 50-100 pages of an excerpt to read gave me a good feel for each book.

I like the season editions as it gives a bigger selection of what is coming out in the following months.
All in all great for readers. The summary and excerpts are helpful in finding more books to read!

It looks like Fall/Winter is going to be a great season filled with many awesome reads!

Thank you Netgalley and Publishers Lunch!

I am still exploring the riches in the Fall/Winter 2017 Buzz Books. I paused in reading the samples to grab several titles and read them immediately--that would be Little Fires Everywhere and The Prague Sonata. My second dip into the collection resulted in Caroline and Stay with Me being added to my TBR. I look forward to each new Buzz Book and refer back to it throughout the season. It keeps me busy until the next installment comes out.
