I just love The Oatmeal's art/comics, and so when I saw this one as a Read Now up on Netgalley I just had to get it. It may not contain much new things (since I follow The Oatmeal on Twitter), but I still wanted it.
And in the end, it was indeed just the comics which I already read on his site (with a few changes at times it seems, maybe to make it more seller-friendly?). But oh well, it was fun to read them again, to see him and his dogs (or should I say middle-aged men) and see what happens in their life.
It is still a brilliant idea to draw draw middle-aged men instead of dogs. It just fits too well, way too well actually, and some scenes made me laugh so loudly (like the bath scene with the POOF, or the mailman and their reaction to it).
At times I just felt so sorry for Matt, it is one thing when it is dogs, but when it is dogs draw as middle-aged men, it just makes situations so much worse (like the bum licking in full view of Matt).
Matt's drawing style is still a favourite of mine.
All in all, this was definitely fun to read and I would recommend it!
Do you read the Oatmeal on a regular basis? Then you have seen most if not all of the cartoons in this book. But, then, if you read the Oatmeal on a regular basis, you also love these cartoons, and here is a chance to have them in a print collection.
Matt started by imagining his two dogs as middle-aged men, and showed how hilarious it is if you see them doing all the regular dog things, but as people. It is a funny book, but I didn't laugh quite so much as the first time I saw his cartoons.
So, good for people who want a printed collection of The Oatmeal's cartoons, and also a good way to convert friends and family to reading his cartoons.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
This was literally an experience that I will never forget because of the sheer hilarity.
I'm not sure why it is so humorous to see dog behavior depicted as performed by middle aged men, but it is! I laughed out loud. This is a fun little gift book.
I don't often read adult comics but this one struck me due to the humorous element of seeing dogs depicted as humans! I find both human and animal behaviours fascinating, so this comic book definitely made me chuckle. I only gave it four stars as I would liked to have seen it a bit longer. All pet-owners can relate to the behaviours depicted in this book!
I'll certainly be looking out for others in the series.
I love The Oatmeal comics. They are clever and funny, and always super relatable. This is a cute look at dog behavior and what it would like like if humans behaved like your favorite pup. The "murderers" section is my favorite. Cute gift for a dog lover. Not my favorite of Matt's work, but still made me smile.
The Oatmeal has done it again.
This is hilarious and brilliant. And true on so many levels. You'll been nodding along saying yes, YES!!
What it says on the tin. I laughed by the end. Probably funnier for dog people; it certainly does something to your perceptions to see two tiny middle-aged men in tighty-whities acting like dogs, even in cartoon form.
Super quick read (about 30 pages) and was really funny.
If you're a fan of The Oatmeal, it's definitely a book for you. If you're a fan of really dumb jokes, this is a book for you.
Plus only The Oatmeal could draw dogs as humans and make it seem like the most normal thing. Fun book, would recommend.
Full disclosure: i love reading The Oatmeal's web comics. This book is hilarious.
I love The Oatmeal. I'm not sure why his particular brand of humor gets me but it does. I'm also generally not one to laugh out loud at books but in this one's all too short duration, I laughed more than once. Not a single page was turned without at least a smile. For anyone who has a dog, I highly recommend this. If you don't own one, I'd still highly recommend it.
Good heavens, I needed that! The Oatmeal is always good for a laugh, as long as you like your humor a bit on the nasty side. But it's so honest and silly to look at how our animals behave as if it were one of us. Pretty absurd and super funny!
Like all things from "The Oatmeal", absolutely hilarious.
The book is the story of the author’s two dogs pictured as two middle age men. It doesn’t sound funny but it is totally hilarious! I’m sure the people at work were wondering why I was first giggling and then laughing out loud at some of the cartoons.
As a servant of two cats, I enjoyed The Oatmeal’s earlier book, How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You. However, as an owner of two dogs, I loved this one even more. Who hasn’t wondered why dogs circle “thrice” before doing their business? Or why dogs chase cars but run from toddlers? After reading this book, it feels weirdly normal now to see dogs portrayed by middle-age men. I’m going to picture my two-year-old female Chihuahua, Janet, as a middle-aged woman from now on. Hopefully, that will explain some of her unexplicable behavior.
5 stars.
I am so glad that I got a review copy of "If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men", I thought it was really funny and it did make me laugh out loud - brilliant way to pass a hour!! Definitely 5 stars from me!
I can’t tell you anything more concerning what this book is about that isn’t already in the title; I do love it when it’s so on point.
Some of these jokes hit a little too close to home, some are kinda gross, but mostly it’s just taking usual dog behaviors and ramping them up to hilarious heights through rudimentary artwork that somehow makes it even funnier. The pooping and bathtime scenarios go into “I can’t believe he went there but I’m laughing so hard” range.
3.5 pushed up to 4/5
This book definitely had me at the dedication. "This book is dedicated to my two idiot dogs, without whom I would probably be exactly where I am now, if not further." It is such a perfect summation of what dog ownership feels like! I was laughing the whole way through, easily imagining my own idiot dogs in these scenarios. I can't wait until this comes out, I look forward to sharing it with other dog owners!
The Oatmeal is always funny. I was a little disappointed that there didn't see to be any new content but re-reading the older stuff is still a laugh.
Two things: First, it's from The Oatmeal's Matt Inman so it's not possible that it won't be funny (no matter what my cats say). Second, any frequent reader of The Oatmeal has seen these. Nevertheless, many a dog owner will enjoy them and this is the perfect book for a cat lover to give a dog lover to help them reassess. 😉
This book is cute for dog owners. It portrays exactly what it's like to have a couple of dogs if they happen to be human. Extremely quick read (10 minutes max).
Loved it!
I remember my best friend talking about The Oatmeal back in high school or maybe college. I didn’t like him. His drawings creeped me out. Oh have I grown since then! If My Dogs Were a Couple of Middle-Aged Men reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbycvPwr1Wg&t=17s&index=6&list=LLuH1nf5lHJ0mK5dXpxCdM4g but while Cat-Friend, Dog-Friend feels somehow clean, even as Dog-Friend goes to eat Cat-Friend’s vomit, If My Dogs is hilariously disgusting: rolling in muck, panicking when the doorbell rings, eating too fast, sleeping with their butts in their caregiver’s face, making prolonged eye contact while pooing, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
You definitely have to a have a particular sense of humour to enjoy The Oatmeal’s off-beat comics. Not everyone is going to appreciate the idea of two old men behaving like dogs in the most loving and (often) most disgusting sense.
This book is hilarious, definitely one of the Oatmeal’s best. Whether or not you love dogs, this book will have you laughing. Like all of the Oatmeal’s comics, the humor comes both from the drawings and the truth inherent in the situations. If you have dogs, I can guarantee they’ve behaved like the two middle aged men on more than one occasion (eg. pooping while keeping in eye contact with the nearest human & barking like there is an ax murderer at the door only to shower love on the visitor when you open the door). Come to think of it, your pets have probably done everything covered by If My Dogs Were Two Middle Aged Men. I can easily imagine my dogs saying the same things (thank goodness they can’t talk in real life). I already know I will be giving copies of If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle Aged Men to several of my dog-loving and one of my dog-less friends.
I highly recommend If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle Aged Men.
5 / 5
I received a copy of If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle Aged Men from the publisher and Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

For some reason, it really fits to have dogs portrayed as middle-aged men.
This was hilarious! I've seen The Oatmeal's comics floating around on the internet but I've never actually read more than a few panels in passing. I wanted to read this because it sounded funny and because it's about dogs - dogs are my life so it seemed like a real no-brainer. Turns out this book is genius! I am a dog owner so I could relate to most of this book. You don't realise how weird dogs are until you imagine them as middle-aged men!
This is laugh-out-loud funny and I just want to say that I died laughing at the SLORP panels because I've been in Matthew's position SO MANY TIMES. I wish it was a little longer because I didn't want it to end. The idea might seem simple, and it is, but it is brilliant. I would definitely recommend this to others and I would read more by The Oatmeal.
*I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
That was hilarious and very fast read just enough to escape the everyday tasks and get off your mind the amount of things awaiting for you to finish.
If you have a dog or a pet you would be able to relate like the rest of us and you would laugh genuinely, because you know it is soo true!
I liked the art work and the humor was spot on!
I gave it 4.5 totally enjoyed it.
This is a fun gift book for dog lovers and fans of The Oatmeal. The concept is very amusing and the comics themselves are at times laugh out loud funny. However, it is worth bearing in mind that it is incredibly short.
Absolutely hilarious! If you're a fan of The Oatmeal - or a fan of dogs - then you'll definitely love this. And, if you've never heard of The Oatmeal, you'll love this anyway. Nothing like imagining your dogs are two middle-aged men!
This was cute and hilarious, just like I expect from Inman and the Oatmeal. Pet owners (even cat people!) can and will find something to relate to in this short little comic. I laughed out loud more than once.
Ah The Oatmeal, guaranteed giggle every time. I've read this book a few times now and the bath comic strip still makes me laugh out loud.
If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men is self explanatory in title. It's a laugh out loud depiction of the traits we normally see on dogs, the catch being that they're not dogs at all, but middle-aged men. From taking a bath to playing catch, this will have you laughing in a fit.
I was reading this in my school's cafe and I could not stop laughing. It was great! My only complaint was that this wasn't longer. It's a super quick read, around 30 pages. It's a perfect gift for that special dog-owner in your life.
The Oatmeal always provides a fun and fresh perspective on the world. This unique look delves into the psyche of dog and what it would be like if they were middle aged mean. Comedy ensures and I am sure that I would not like a pair of middle aged men.
One star depleted because it was way too short; just as you really get into it, it ends.
Hilarious! As a person who has a dog, I approve of every single word written.
A short book of simple drawings that are really relatable to dog owners. Readers will find themselves nodding & thinking, "Yep, that's what dogs do!" I don't think I can call the drawings "cute"...they're actually probably more on the ...'obnoxious' side...?! But, I liked it....
I received this e-ARC from NetGalley, in return only for my own honest review.
Hurray! Matthew “The Oatmeal” Inman is back with another fantastic and funny pet-themed comic book, If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men.
The observations aren’t at all original and any dog owners will be familiar with them: freaking out when you leave, losing their shit when someone knocks on the door, playing with squeaky toys, and eating like slobs, to name a few.
But what makes this book special and uniquely hilarious is Matt’s dogs are envisioned as two fat old men: one who looks like Uncle Fester and one who looks like Ignatius J. Reilly!
Watching this pair of lunatics doing everyday doggy things is ludicrously funny - I was laughing the whole way through! Kudos to Matt for such an inspired concept. It helps that Matt is a super-talented cartoonist who knows how to perfectly sell the jokes in comics format.
At under 40 pages, this one’s a lot shorter than his other books but it’s an ideal gift book for dog owners and/or fans of The Oatmeal. As both of those things, I loved it - an excellent comedy read and highly recommended for anyone looking for a chuckle!
4 stars!
if you have a dog ...and you swear your dog is human you will insanely relate to this. After reading this crazy short book you may never be able to imagine your dogs not as very fat middle aged men again. I think my favorite comic I may have ever witnessed is of the two middle aged men "cleaning" themselves while the humans sleep and it is displayed as that gross sound that for some reason makes you blood curl. This book is hilarious and if you enjoy Oatmeal comedy then this is a must have to add to your hilarious collection. I would post images but the book is so short it may just ruin it for you!
I like Oatmeal's work generally but find he can go extreme which I don't enjoy. This was funny but I would have actually liked it better if it was done with dogs, not men and the men aspect made it side into the extreme but don't like category.
Consistent with Inman's style as The Oatmeal, the book, while short, was laugh out loud funny, particularly for me as a dog owner. It's also rare that I find a quote I know will come out of my own mouth in regular conversation, but the sentence "My face is LITERALLY a Slip 'N Slide of tears" was definitely stored for future use.
From the always-hilarious creator of The Oatmeal, this book is a pleasant - if brief - romp through what life would be like if his two dogs were instead middle-aged men. Particularly easy to relate to if you have excitable dogs.
Cute. Fluff.
Also too real. My favorite small bit was them being woken up by the doorbell and going "murder?? MURDERRR!!" and then heart eyes at the delivery guy. I've seen my friends dog do this about 100 times since he's over so much. He's all bark and just wants cuddles.
Basically this is just a silly book of exactly what it says it is - imagining as if the writers dogs were middle-aged men - and it's adorable? I love dogs, possibly a unhealthy amount, so that might be why I read this and loved it so much. So if you, too, love dogs an unhealthy amount, or know someone who does, then this might be a good present.
Perfect for fans of any of The Oatmeal's previous works. It's a nice, short, silly read that is exactly as it says, "If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men."
The only complaint I have after reading this collection is how short it was. Aside from the brevity, these comics capture much of the humor of owning dogs - through the unexpected and admittedly strange lens of those dogs being a couple middle-aged men. But as unique as the premise might be, it is a fun and funny take on pet-ownership that is well-worth the read.
If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men
by The Oatmeal, Matthew Inman
I requested this book from NetGalley and the review is voluntary.
This is such a crazy and hilarious book! The sight of a hairy grown man and a grown bald man as dogs is so silly that it makes a person giggle just looking at them. Then the silly cartoons put them in situations of dogs that really set off the giggle factor. Fun book, messes with the funny bone!
I received an advanced copy of If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men from Net Galley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
If you’re looking for a funny and quick (less than 40 pages) read, then this is the book for you. There were points where this literally had me laughing out loud. Fans of the Oatmeal will enjoy it, as will anyone who’s had any experience owning dogs, I imagine.
Matthew Inman uses absurd comparisons to make even the most banal moments in day to day life hilarious. In this case it’s comparing his silly dogs to grown men (by drawing said grown men as his two dogs). Needless to say, hilarity ensues.
It’s worth noting that the Oatmeal is a collection of comics (fans will obviously already know this) that can be found online. So buying this book isn’t really necessary, but it does have the nice benefit of supporting something you love. So if you’re seeking a gift, a chuckle, a pick-me-up, or a chance to see the world in odd manners, then I strongly advise you pick this one up.
The premise of this graphic novel is rather obvious, the author depicts his dogs as if they were middle-aged men.
My biggest problem with this book was how short it was. It has only about 38 pages.
The novel was surprisingly funny, though. I read "How to Tell Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You" and I loved it so I didn't even hesitate when I discovered this book was from the same author.
I was not disappointed. I recommend this book, I would give it 5 stars but it was way too short.
If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Age Men by Matthew Inman (also known as The Oatmeal) is currently schedule for release on September 26 2017. This charmingly absurd gift book about man’s best friend is the kind of humor and art that one fully expects from the mind behind The Oatmeal and books like How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You. In If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men, Matthew Inman imagines what life would be like if his dogs were a couple of old men running around his house. The result is a pitch-perfect gift for any dog owner, animal lover, or fan of The Oatmeal.
If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Age Men gives readers exactly what they should expect from this author, with this title. Inman draws his two dogs as middle age men and puts them in everyday doggy situations. Not high brow humor by any means- but anyone with dogs (or pets of any kind really) can relate to the adventures of this two, and the reactions of their owner. They are suitably silly and occasionally gross- like any animal is bound to be. The book is amusing and hits all the right notes, at least the ones that anyone with any prior knowledge of the Oatmeal would expect. It was short, but I think that is better than dragging on the jokes to the point where they are no longer quite as amusing.
I love absurdity. That may be part of the reason I love dogs so much, they naturally seem to have a happy absurdity about them. This brief book of cartoons adds another element of silliness by depicting the author's two dogs as middle aged men. It's a little weird, especially since my favorite was about bath time, so I have to still think of them as dogs, because if I overthink it as two actual middle aged men with the younger man who takes them outside on a leash, it gets weird. Best to avoid any literal association and enjoy the silliness. Anyone who has had the pleasure of living with dogs should appreciate this book and will likely finish wanting more.
I have been following Matt Inman and The Oatmeal for sometime. His work always makes me laugh and this book was no exception. Matt completely nails how dogs behave and seem to think. Illustrating them as middle aged men added to the humor and the absurdity of the various situations. This book gave me a great chuckle and I enjoyed it.
I've always been a fan of The Oatmeal so I had very high expectations for this little book, which weren't entirely met.
Matthew Inman tends to go one of two ways with his comics - hilarious or profound. This one was 'quite funny', it does what it says on the label and the illustrations are as amazing as you'd expect so I would have loved it if I didn't know he could be so much funnier.
All that being said, I would absolutely buy a copy of this as a coffee table book for guests to enjoy!
This book is exactly why I don't have dogs. So incredibly funny. Honestly, I love the Oatmeal and it has yet to disappoint. I think my only complaint is that it is too short - I need more. If you like silly and are looking for something that is light and not complicated - this is the book for you.
This book features several gags in which the author’s dogs are middle-aged men, just like the title suggests.
The book’s art is simple and clean.
The gags are, in a word, hilarious.
This book is great, however, I feel it could have been longer.
In the best traditions of the Oatmeal humour I know and love, Matthew Inman gives us a look at what life would be like if his dogs were middle-aged men (presumably only on the outside, though I'll admit some of these are a bit ambiguous).
A really great collection, definitely a good pressie if you have any dog lovers (or middle aged men) in your life.
OK, what if your dogs were a pair of middle-aged men? Sounds creepy, right? This is the question posed by The Oatmeal's If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men. Think of your dog's unusual behaviors. Or his normal behaviors. The things he does every day. Now imagine a middle-aged man doing those things. In your house. If your imagination fails you, pick up this book.
The Oatmeal's sense of humor is always a little off-beat. This one is just weird. Funny, but weird.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the complimentary electronic review copy!
*thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
4 stars.
This was so funny BECAUSE its soooo true! This author is obviously a dog owner as every page was spot on. This is exactly what dogs would be like if they were middle aged men.
Well done to the Matthew Inman for another wonderful book!
'If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men' by Matthew Inman is a short, but hilarious book that delivers exactly what the title promises.
Matthew Inman dedicates the book to his two idiot dogs, then proceeds to portray them as middle-aged men. When the owner sneezes, the dogs come running out yelling out 'Emergency!' They also beg to play fetch, then run away. These and other jokes that are played out to hilarious ends.
This might have run really thin, but at 36 pages, this book actually made me want more, which means it was probably a perfect length. I really enjoyed this one.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
The Oatmeal has a pretty twisted, hilarious view of life. In this case he takes a fairly mundane topic, the inexplicable behavior of dogs, and makes it pretty funny by casting fat crazy men in their place. Weird behavior from a dog is mildly funny. THe same behavior from a person is deranged. And thus we laugh.
