This book makes for an interesting read, as a Harry Potter fan since the first edition books appeared on shop shelves, I was amazed by the information I gained knowledge of from this guide.
From our books to the movie props and cinema given poster stock, art work and other various rare merchandise from the film set, we learn of auctions taken place for items and the guide prices for others too. Even rare Lego and popular new Funko Pops of the franchise are featured with astonishing prices.
If you have merch yourself or love the series and want ton learn more, this is a great book for you to get your hands on.
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
The reason of my being... The reason I fell in love with books and all things books... HARRY POTTER!!!!!! I am a huge Harry Potter fan! Huge! I get excited about even the teeniest tiniest thing that's related to The world of Harry Potter and The world of Witchcraft and Wizardry! So.... you can only imagine my excitement when i received this! Yes I wept for joy.. I know..silly...but... I'm not embarrassed or ashamed. I felt like how Dobby felt when "Malfoy" gave him the socks! happy...duh!
Now, this book isn't just a guide to collecting Harry Potter things but a work of art, telling stories behind famous pieces and fun facts strewn across pages of cultivated knowledge. For all the HP nut-heads out there.. this is like winning the Quidditch cup along with the House Cup...all wrapped up in a pretty big bow!
This is a book that will help you build your already big Harry Potter collection even bigger! It also has active website links for you to browse through or even purchase items.
PS: There are spoilers in this book related to the Harry Potter movies and the Book series... So If you haven't read or watch the Harry Potter book/ movie ( If you haven't....which world have you lived in for the past 10+ years??!!), I'd advise you to to do so first.
Happy Reading!!!!
This isn't just a guide to collecting Harry Potter things but a work of art, telling stories behind famous pieces and fun facts strewn across pages of cultivated knowledge. This book helps you understand what "Harry Pottery" is and how best to build your collection (with active website links included) while drooling at previously sold items. Eric Bradley has given something special from his expertise to inspire artists, creators and collectors alike. Warning: For those of you who haven't read or watched Harry Potter (What are you waiting for?) there are spoilers.

3 stars.
I consider myself to be an average fan of the Harry Potter series, having out off reading the books for 20 years because I was wanting to save them (im weird, I know), but this year, the 20th Anniversary, I pickee up the first book and read and read. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It made me feel that warmth you get from something truly special. So when I started reading this book, I was going back into that wonderful world and I once again felt that warm love feeling. This book is a must for all fans who can never ever get enough of Harry Potter. The 'Did You Know' facts were interesting and I really enjoyed seeing all those pictures, most I have seen, some I havent. My favourite is one I have not seen before, which I think is on page 20. The movie poster with the owl carrying the letter address to Harry with the date, November 16 2001 underneath.
So yes, while most of it is about the costs these books are all going for and other facts and figures (understandably as it is called, 'Harry Potter - The Unofficial Guide to the Collectibles of Our Favorite Wizard') and all related to that, it is a good decent book.
Harry Potter - The Unofficial Guide to the Collectibles of Our Favorite Wizard from F + W Media and written/curated by Heritage Auctions' Eric Bradley, is an in-depth very well photographed collectible price and ID book covering most everything associated with 'Harry Pottery' (all things Potter).
The guide, at 208 pages is well packed with items which are assembled into chapters. The table of contents lists an introduction, including what is (and isn't) 'Harry Pottery', 8 chapters divided into ephemera and props from the books, movie posters, actual movie props, other items (for example the signed, author decorated chair where she wrote the books - $394,000), retail collectible merchandise, limited edition collectibles, fandom and Potter-inspired collectibles.
The books have a special place in most readers' memories and world. Actually owning a piece of gear which was used in the movies has the capacity to turn otherwise rational people into squealing fangirls/boys. To be absolutely honest, I started a review of this book and got distracted several times just looking at the items over and over again. The chances of me ever actually plonking down $1.9 miiiillion dollars (please insert Dr. Evil voice) are nil, but darn it, that is one FINE book!
Yes, the book includes pics of a handmade morocco leather bound hand written and drawn (by J.K. Rowling herself) copy of Beedle the Bard. The backstory has never been published (as far as I know). A prop version of this book in the movie was given to Hermione by Dumbledore. Afterward, the author handwrote and illustrated the story for a select number of friends. The cover furnishings are sterling silver encrusted with semiprecious stones.
Back to the collectibles book. It's unofficial but very well written, no-nonsense text by a professional who writes collectible and valuation catalogs as his day job. He knows what he's talking about.
This book is what it is; a well curated valuation guide and photographic encyclopedia. I was actually quite surprised at how affordable a lot of the collectibles are. A first edition authentic movie poster can be had for $40-200.
Four stars, although now I really want to go find an original movie poster to go with my Creature from the Black Lagoon and Plan 9 From Outer Space posters!
I consider myself a Harry Potter fan, and in fact gradually converted my muggle of a husband into a closeted Slytherin (not my first choice, but at least he’s sorted now).
As much of a fan as I am, I don’t really have much in the way of Harry Pottery. According to this book Harry Pottery is the term for all things that are collected by fans of Harry Potter. I have a wand and some metal house bookmarks, but this book made me realize what a wide variety of items there are out there. And I pretty much want them all. Except the posters. Someone else can collect those. But seriously if someone can give me The Monster Book of Monsters for Christmas I would be greatly appreciative.
This book was really informative and opened my eyes up to all the different things that could be collected, even though the chapter on posters bored me some, I was interested to know that some of the bigger movie posters are fairly cheap because it costs so much to frame them. I hadn’t thought of that before, and I would probably be someone that would buy a huge poster without giving thought to the cost of framing (and then never get it framed due to the cost). I still might do it… but at least I’m informed now. My favorite pieces throughout the book were actually the one of a kind items. The work that went into most of those pieces is incredible but its also inspiring to know that Harry Potter fans can use their talents and their love of the fandom to create valuable art. I’m a collector by nature, and while Harry Pottery wasn’t one of my collections this book has made me want to get started.
I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan, so I was very excited to receive this book for a review. This book is filled with information on different Potter collectibles, as well as how much they're being sold for at auctions and such. Throughout the book, there are little "Did you know?" snippets. What I found most interesting were some of the changes made in later reprints of the books!
Definitely an interesting book for any HP fan!
This is a must for any Harry Potter fan for their collection. I fell in love with Harry Potter and a huge fan of his movies and books. So Harry Potter - The Unofficial Guide to the Collectibles of Our Favourite Wizard was a wicked find.
