Objects can change shape based on whether it is made from soft or hard materials. This nonfiction Beginning-to-Read book contains high-frequency words and content vocabulary. Connecting Concepts pages include a word list along with activities to strengthen early science and literacy skills, such as understanding nonfiction text, science in the real world, science and academic language, fluency, and finding further information. This is a very good non-fiction title for early readers. It introduces the concepts of physical property in a way that is easy to understand. It discusses several of the main things that make up physical properties of an object like color, shape, material makeup, and shape consistency. The illustrations are photographic style pictures. They are clear and support and reinforce the concepts introduced. The end of the book contains fluency tips for parents and caregivers to support reading. It also contains a list of content words and high frequency words that can be reviewed with the early reader. I recommend this title and think it supports STEM basics.
This book wasn't quite what I was expecting, but I still found value it it all the same.
The vibrancy of the book keeps it engaging and interesting, and with only a few words per page it keeps the reader on point for each lesson.
There are quite a few different leaning opportunities throughout the book where it looks at camouflage, colour being used to easily recognise objects, the aesthetics of colour, there is information of properties of material and changing shape. Each page giving the reader insight into how we see things in the world.
My main upset with the book is that I feel as though the words are quite complicated and would require you as the teacher, parent or aid to explain them to the children. It mentions in the rear of the book to be sure that your child understands academic and science language and lists a few words.
I do like that it offers further books to look at and websites that are useful and feel that these would be well used to follow on from the book. Would recommend for a school library.
Color and Shape by Mary Lindeen is an informative, non-fiction book in the Physical Science Series. The book provides an interesting way that is easy for children to understand about some of the concepts of physical properties. Some of the physical properties of objects that are introduced include color, shape, material makeup, and shape consistency. I did think the title was bit deceiving as it was more about properties of materials in general. This is also an early reader book so will help to reinforce reading skills as well. At the back of the book it lists the high frequency words as well as content words that can be pre-taught or discussed if the book is being read aloud. There are facts given during the reading accompanied by photos as well as a few sections called "Did you Know". The section at the back for parents and teachers gives questions for further discussion, resources for further investigation as well as suggestions of activities to reinforce concepts. A good book for a primary classroom studying properties of materials.
